I can't explain why I'm smitten by this game. I know it will likely be the last huge release in my gaming career (one I will enjoy for many many years). I've only had 3 or 4 releases like this in my entire life and I've had blind faith in the development decisions we've seen this past year. I think the biggest factor capturing me is the million and one different ways to build a character. I will be discovering crazy new powerful builds forever and this is a real creative outlet for myself.

that is the singular and solitary reason why i love diablo 3 so much and why i will enjoy it for so long.

I'm looking forward to the game. It's too early to say where I will stand after release as far as "best game ever." I hope that it has replayability and high levels of enjoyment, but something like that won't be known until I've played the entire game through inferno.
With regard to expectations/hype...
Imagine Blizz never announced that D3 was in the works. Imagine Blizz did all of their testing internally. Imagine that the first time that you heard about D3 was when they did a FULL announce of all classes, systems, etc, including its release date.
It creates an entirely different atmosphere than the one that we have right now. Right now, people are in terrible moods because of all of the pushbacks and changes. If they released the game without players having any prior knowledge to the previous builds, etc., I honestly believe that people would have a much better outlook for the release; one surrounded by positive hype.
Unfortunately, something like this would never happen, because companies need hype to generate profit, but I definitely think that Blizzard has allowed too much user interaction in the creation of this game. The hype that they have created has been more negative hype than positive. Shorter beta with an NDA might have helped in this matter, but I don't own a multi billion dollar gaming company, so I'm definitely not going to say that what they did was right or wrong... I will simply speculate.
Just last night, I was talking to a friend that I didn't know played video games and he mentioned D3. He said that he was looking forward to it, but that he wasn't expecting much because he had heard "from sources" that the beta is a complete nightmare and that the pushbacks along with other issues are leading up to "a release disaster." THAT is the kind of attitude that people are having going into the release of this game. I know not everyone feels this way, and hopefully we are all AMAZED by the final product, but I definitely feel that there is a very negative feeling surrounding D3 at the moment. One that, again, I hope changes to complete positive at release.

While I agree in principle that this aspect of build customization drives players to continue playing the game.. do you think that the way they implemented skills and runes helps that for this release?
Im of the opinion that having NO decisionmaking when it comes to character build is a bad thing. Sure, leveling a character in D3 you will be choosing which skills to use.. but theres no connection to the character as "my guy" or "my product through decisions" because I can change the character completely in 10 seconds and 3 clicks.. I feel this cheapens the character in some aspect.
I do like the rune system, but it is more or less the exact same thing to just have (numbers wont be correct but) 20 skills with 5 runes each (100 options) or just have 100 skills that you unlock. Its just different packaging..
I feel like a lot of the aspects that they have implemented do everything in their power to simplify the game, to take any player decision making out of the equation and in doing so, take skill out of the equation. I liked the D2 skill system from the aspect that I COULD potentially mess up, have a bad build, whatever.
Im not saying I would like to see the new system taken out completely, but maybe put a timer on build changes, mandatory to do it in town and so forth to make builds a more interesting and thought provoking challenge..

I agree that Blizzard had too much user interaction. I was always confused why they engaged directly with their community so much as opposed to just keeping an eye on the feedback. Yet at the same time, I think D3 should've been an open beta. But the beta has been a great source of hype for the game because it's so exclusive and it leaves so many people wondering even more about. Whereas if anyone could've just played it, perhaps there was the risk a lot of people would be underwhelmed by it (as I was) and start to lose interest in the game.
I think a big part of the problem is Blizzard is so used to these long luxurious development cycles. I think there was a time where having such a long and indeterminate timeframe to make a game was good for you. Somehow, it seems, the long development cycle is now just working against them. Not just because people are getting impatient and soured on the game, but because the developers seem to think there's always more time so perhaps they should change or scrap or add another system. I guess what I'm saying is what worked well for them when there was less competition and heck, even less internet, is not working out so great for them now. And while some people really disagree, I think it would be best for Blizzard to just go silent for awhile. Obviously they'd have to announce the game not being released with PvP. But with all the rest of the minor details, specifically with the skill and leveling system, they need to just have more confidence in their own vision of it and let us see what the finished product is instead of constantly opening it up to public scrutiny. Seeking feedback from fans is fine and all, but this far along they should just have a pretty good sense of what's worked well for the most part or what fans have reacted positively too, and just do whatever it is they're finally gonna do. Then just let us see what the final result is. I mean, people seem to trust Blizzard for the most part. So just go silent and make your decisions on everything and allow us to see the finished result. I don't get why you'd do it any other way. I've heard the arguments why you would, but I guess I still just don't comprehend it.
I know not everyone feels this way, and hopefully we are all AMAZED by the final product, but I definitely feel that there is a very negative feeling surrounding D3 at the moment. One that, again, I hope changes to complete positive at release.
I'm totally on the fence with this game. The beta might have been overall boring for me, but I knew it was just the beta. And I will also admit there were times that I played and thought, "You know, this is actually pretty nice!" The times I felt that was when the game was challenging and I was running for my life. But you quickly become overleveled in the beta and once things become really easy to kill, you also just start noticing weird things about the skill system or with my particular beef, the lack of weapon animations which I know most of you don't seem to care about, but that's a whole other discussion.
yo T. u gotta look at it like this. the D2 system had a right and wrong way to build a character. id like to build a character the way i want and not have to worry about it ruining the game for me. and making a skill system extremely hard liek that would only cater to the hardcore diablo fans and basically ruin it for any and all casuals/noobs who dont follow the guides the hardcore guys make online. so it would just turn into D2 again. "arg fuck da noobs n scrubs! i r not carebear"

Seems like every other thread I read consists of atleast 3 or 4 posts about how this will be the "BEST GAME EVER"..
Does anyone actually believe that? To me.. D3 is a let down. I am extremely excited to play and get rolling with it no doubt.. but think back to before that first video came out, before screenshots were released.. is the the product you expected?
Sure it has its merits, I think its going to be fun and relatively successful.. but what I imagined for the last what... 12 years since D2.. this just isn't up to par.
The graphics are cool but uninspired. Interactive environments are a neat touch, I dont know what the look of the game is missing but it just seems.. meh. Cant put my finger on it.
Not going to start on the PvP dilemma, we all know thats a major gaffe..
In general, I'm personally not BLOWN AWAY by this release.. would love to hear why I'm wrong and this is the best game ever.
Commence the spitting on my shoes and what not.
im with u bro it didnt blow me away LOVE the customization, looting, story but if it looked like this, I would b much happier...sorry please dont kill me diablo fanboys/girls

i always defend D3 and its system changes and the art and everything like a fanboy. but i would also like it to look like that. the gameplay of that game looks like garbage, but the graphics are sweet
