I've come to terms with the new run system. I would have like to have seen Blizzard take it a different direction, but I do think it is better than the way it was originally. The current system will not ruin the game for me, and I will not lose any sleep over it.
However, I would like to see Blizzard change the name of the “Skill Rune.” I know that this is getting a little bit picky, and in the grand scheme of things, it will not change the game-play in any way at all, but the new system really has nothing to due with Runes.
When I think of Runes I think of an ancient tablet or stone that has a letter from the Germanic Alphabet carved into it with same kind of ancient power infused into it that can be used to enhance something.
Why do I think of this when I think of a Rune? … … ... Simple, Diablo 2 permanently stamped this idea into my head with countless hours of playing, grinding, and searching for the best runes in the game.
Keep the system, I understand the reasons why they made the changes and I think they did a decent job explaining most of these reasons to us. But lets name the new system something a bit more appropriate.
What would you name the new system if you had a choice? Or, Do you think the current name is fine?
I'll start, I think the new system should be called something like “Skill Enhancements”
Try explaining why we call them skill runes to a casual gamer.
They're be perplexed as to what a rune is & where it comes from.
The answer is: it just falls from the sky when you 'level up'.
...
Yeah, I agree 100%. They need to change the name to skill abstracts or something.
The runes look dumb anyway.
I think it works, and it leaves them open to add new features to them. Say they bring back rune words as items to enhance your runes that you use.
god help us if they bring back rune words. thats when i leave. and i wouldnt be the only one. kind of like how over a million people left wow after they announced panda land

I call them...... Skills.... because ultimately all they have done is given us more skills directly instead of requiring any for of "item" to provide variations.
Why wouldn't we? Just because you can't pick them up off the floor and put them in your inventory doesn't make them any less of what they are.
Actually it does make them less. There is no longer a rune system> they don't drop, they have no ranks so there is ZERO progression, and you can't hunt the rare top rank ones in Inferno (which was a big part of end game)
Runes are now:
-6 buttons on the Skill UI panel that unlock at specific levels.
Thats it. Thats the system. There's no extra depth at all. It's been turned into a streamlined, on rails carrot on a stick for those that require it to be able to hit the levels past 30.
I'd like to see them keep it named as runes for only one reason: so they can't add runes as a droppable item later that can be used to create runewords. I hated collecting runes in Diablo 2 and thought that system wasn't anywhere near as fun as simply looking for a unique item. Sure am glad I'll be able to use gold for currency in D3 instead of worrying about lame runes.

Sorry I'm not going to say it in a different way to appease you. You don't like it don't respond to it. I'm upfront and direct. I call it what it is.
How about you respond explaining how I'm wrong if you disagree instead of QQing about my supposed QQing. "ffs"
There have been too many threads on this. But anyways, so far the term I've found most favor for is "Skill Augmentation." I do feel that calling them runes should be corrected. You do not pick them up as a drop, they just become a part of you as you level up.
My opinion is that instead of runes they should be "skill crystals" or "skill stones" but the word "Rune" doesn't belong given the prescedent set in Diablo II. The Diablo universe has already defined "rune stones" as items to be socketed into equipment.
Personally, I would have liked to see "Rune Stones" stay as equipment modifiers (even if they had to be simplified in some way) while adding "Skill Stones" or "Skill Crystals" for skill augmentation.
For a game so focused on loot I just don't see a good reason to remove anything people enjoyed receiving as a drop. Rergardless, I expect D3 will be an enjoyable experience albeit different from past games.
Well they are masteries pretty much. You are gaining them through leveling by mastering the skills of the class and thus creating off-shoots of the base technique.

That's the winner for me. They should be called masteries. Skill masteries if you're feeling plucky.
Edit: Since they don't have colors now, but instead have nameless symbols, I think they should have new individual names. Could either just call them 1st through 5th mastery, or come up with arbitrary, fictitious names like they did for the D2 runes. (example: Wirlwind; Sot Mastery -or- Ray of Frost; Numan Mastery)
I'd call them "Awesome things that make your skills glow and stuff" but I doubt Blizz will go for it. Skill rune too sounds cool tho. I never really liked name "runestone" since it keeps reminding me runewords and runes from D2.

On topic: they still look like "runes" and they go with skills. so no they shouldnt change the name
