The entire thing would be fine when elective mode is off.
When its on however, SERIOUS changes are needed. Different UI, unlocked bars, and all skills in one place. You can still already achieve anything you want, except you can't use normal attacks, and you can't put a skill a on hotkey until you unlock it (which is ridiculous). The customization isn't gone, its just a heck of a lot more pain.
We can't use normal attacks anymore? Lol..so what's the point of these:
17 Virtuoso
Increases the damage of your basic wand attack by 100%. Successful attacks with a wand generate 15 Arcane Power and heal you for 1% of your maximum Life.
17 Fundamentals Increases the damage of your Basic Attack by 100%. Your Basic Attack restores 4 Hatred.
There must be a way to normal attack. Maybe they removed it on accident? I'm sure it will make it in the final version.

ya I think they really need to work on thus new rune UI its not very easy to understand or work around. I hope they find a way to also let us level up the runes cause its not very fun in its current state.
You can use it, by default its on right click, but once you put a skill over it its gone, and you can't get it back. I'm also sure they will bring it back.
Edit: I don't see why they are trying to make the game playable for toddlers, when the game itself has a rating of M...for mature.
While I can't say for sure if these changes are for the better, I'm pretty sure their intent isn't to make it playable for actual toddlers. Maybe you're just being facetious, but it always kinda bugs me when people get their knives out whenever any concession is made to make a game more accessible, or to draw in the less "hardcore" among us. This seems fairly innocuous - I'll start freaking out when they're putting unlockable loot under the caps of mountain dew bottles.
Frankly, it doesn't bother me if there's a "hold left mouse button to win" feature as long as I can turn it off, and it seems like they haven't actually taken any control away from the player if you turn on elective mode, so it seems like no big deal.

Not toddlers. They're catering to housewives and unemployed parents who see their kids play and would otherwise be playing casual flash games.
I see your point, though. Not many people who are 18+ are all that unfamiliar with video games. The thing is, not every gamer has spent a lot of time in the Diablo universe or aRPGs in general. I can see why Blizzard wants to simplify some of their systems so those who are unfamiliar can get used to how things work. Sometimes, however, I think they've gone a little too far and tried to take too much control away from the player. This "auto placement" of skills on the mouse buttons & taskbar is one of them.
I kind of like the new system. It makes having a more rounded character easier. AT least for normal, after which elective mode is the way to go. I agree that the UI is clunky for elective mode, but they will no doubt fix that.
Personally, as a past time big time gamer who doesn't have the time he once did to play games, all these changes towards casual are making me feel more comfortable about the fact that I wont be able to pump a whole lot of time into the game. The new rune system is another of these changes. This one in particular means I can enjoy the full game without spending absurd amounts of time finding the required ruin for each skill.

Normally I write rational and carefully worded posts. However this time I feel inclined to step away from this habit.
You sir, did not understand the change. You fail completely with this post, and shall now be counted towards the other kids who cry wolf with every single ffing change Blizzard implements.
I do like the new system of getting rid of the need for more items to upgrade skills. The thought of constantly collecting and upgrading rune stones for your build, and then constantly changing them when you want to switch some skills around seemed like it would be more of a burden then fun, even keeping you from changing in some cases to save yourself the trouble.
However, I'm not sure I like it as a set system where you hit a certain level and you get a specific rune for a skill unlocked. To give it a feel of more customization I think it would be cool if it gave you a certain number of unlocks at a level up, then you get to choose which runes you'd like to unlock for a given skill. Or even get an unlock for certain quest rewards or first time boss kills. Then you could build your character up in the way you wanted and give it a feel of using strategy as you go. Of course they could set it up so that by the time you hit 60 everyone gets enough unlocks to unlock everything, so they could keep with their direction of letting everyone access everything and preventing people from having to re-level a class to get certain skills. Not sure if Blizz would agree with this, but I think it would give it a more fun and old school feel as you played through.
I sort of just wish they'd pick a system and stick with it... I keep getting excited about a system and then they go and change it again before I can even try it.

It would be a lot better to just remove those passives. They don't really fit in with the limited skill slot mechanic that was added. Not only do you have to keep a mouse button open, but you actually have to give up a skill as well. They could change those to something more up to date with the other changes made.

And was like, woah, woah, woah...they are choosing where our skills are placed on our action bar for us?
WHY!?
