if you look at the deamon hunters companion spell there is a alabaster rune effect that will summon two ferrets that pick up gold for you and find 25% more gold on them ..... my only question is now if it was not ok to keep it in how is it then ok to let demon hunters keep it? I myself like it but I guess it does give hope to the people that did like the scroll.
Scrolls of Companion required you to be very near the gold itself for your companions to pick up, anyway. As Blizzard pointed out, they also look a little awkward, and I think that they wanted to partly distance D3 from WoW by not having a group of 4 players running around, each with a little pet picking up gold for them. The idea just sounds too 'cute'.
In the DH's case, it's exclusive to that class, so I don't think that it would look quite as funny, even if it were four Demon Hunters which comprised your party. In a way, Scrolls of Companion were almost like giving other classes one of the DH's runed skills for free - that's no fun!
The way I see it is that there is one or maybe a few silly options you can choose to customize your gameplay. A lot of people were worried that ferrets did in fact make Diablo III too "cute" but when you think about it, who is actually going to be using them often at all? Every game needs a bit of comic relief/the odd silliness.
I hope they add some way to auto-loot gold. I don't really care what the mesh, texture, or special effects look like. I just hate running around picking up junk (but I hate leaving it behind even more).

Surely just running over it isn't that much of a pain. Remember the other Diablos? D:
Simply put, ferrets are legitimate assistance animals for hunting with a history going back 2 thousand years. It fits the Demon Hunter "thing". Pigs and spiders and whatever else are not. In addition, using the ferret rune represents a tradeoff even within the spell itself, you're losing out on one of your potentially game changing skill slots just so you don't have to run and pick up gold. Companion scrolls weren't really a tradeoff or a choice, they were just always better and there was no reason not to use one - even for melee classes since I have personally come across situations where I have had to backtrack to pick up gold.
Interesting input on the ferrets....when I read that skill tooltip, i was like wtf.
I never liked the companion scrolls. Personally I don't like using non skill related companions at all (followers, mercs)
