That little room he was in was PACKED full of gore - impaled or dismembered bodies everywhere, entrails all over the floor... being a kid at the time I remember feeling a sense of real fright (and excitement) when I knew I was going to have to confront the butcher and hear him exclaim "Ah, fresh meat!".
This element of horror in an rpg really appealed to me. There just wasn't anything quite like it at the time.
My first character in D2 - I rolled a Great Axe Necro and Maxed strength(Don't Ask). I had no clue what I was doing, but I was having a hell of a time doing it. My friend one day asked me to join a game so he could mule. I went to mf while he muled in Act 1 and died with my level 70 something Necro to Mephisto. He screenshotted it, and we still laugh about it to this day(This was 10 years ago).
My best memory is playing Diablo 1 with my friend via modem. "Mom, don't answer the phone, it's for the game". I'm sure they loved the phone line being unavailable all evening.
My absolute favorite moment was creating your own weapons and items in Diablo 1. When you had the mod programs you could make you own spells and having the Arch Angel Staff of Apocalypse with 255 charges just mowing mofos down was awesome. Not to mention the Vials of Semen for items, which was hilarious in 1997. You can stil lmod nowadays but nothing like Diablo 1 and the creation of a PK, godly.......

Sometimes you don't always know where you stand... until you know that you won't run away.
Diablo - My brothers and I would take turns playing this and thinking about different strats and all sorts of things... I fell in love with the catacomb and cave maps and really love the old storybook voice that was used to tell the story. One of the more memorable things is that my brother had this silly name for his Mage "Gontuninsarus"
Diablo II - Definitely the taking advantage of people and playing with friends in High School and Middle School. Getting used to how the internet worked pretty much took place in this game and everquest exclusively, but this game is the first where things got REAL on the net.
Starcraft - Adding this in cause I have this one really nostalgic moment to share. I was sick, real sick with a fever or some such and I couldn't even play it was so bad. So I sat in a nice big recliner with blankets all over me and I watched them fight eachother. I think it was around when Brood War shipped because my brother took the other one by surprise with dark templar in a jungle map and it was just so hilarious.
The fondest memory i have of Diablo 1 was the first time i got godly plate of the whales from some kid in a game with kings sword of haste n obsidan rings just remember being like "im lvl 2 and im unbeatable" feeling. twas good fun! and the first time seing the butcher.
haha oh i love this question. I remember being like 11 or 12 and a buddy of mine told me about this new game he got called Diablo. So me and another pal went over to his place to check it out. The first thing that got my attention was the soundtrack how dark it was. sooo awsome. The three of us took turns till about 4 in the morning chugging back cokes and devouring bags of chips to see how far we could get ourselvs through and how much good stuff we could find. Had a 3 hour sleep got up and begged my parents to buy it for me. The rest is history i have loved the franchise ever since.
Easily my earliest memory from the Diablo franchise was the town's music in Tristram. I was only about 6 or 7 years old, and I was way too scared to play the game. So I put it on mute. Good times
One of the more memorable moments for me was when I first met Duriel :P.
I was playing with a friend who had played the game before me, and he was like: "Ok, when we go through this wall, open a Town Portal IMMEDIATELY, and don't stop moving."
It sounded sooooo scary, and when we popped through, I was indeed running around like a headless chicken XD. In retrospect, perhaps he shouldn't have even hinted at the surprise, but it was still quite a moment indeed.
Another moment I think is very memorable was from D1 when I was watching my big brother play. The Butcher's "aaah fresh meat!" was stuck in my head for a long LONG time, as it seems to have been for just about everyone here :P.
I'm sure alot of people have said this one already but definitely the BUTCHER! That guy scared the #!%# out of me when I first played diablo. It was the first pc game I played and I remember he kept killing me because I couldn't resist the impulse to run, my strategy went out the window
2 memories actually. I remember the first time I saw Diablo. My friend had it. I asked him what it was and knew Blizzard had made it (I was a huge Warcrafter at the time.) So he showed it to me.
I got online to play with people and someone playing a caster portaled me to his dungeon. Soon after I was dead. It was my first experience with a PK. It was both funny and yet souring. My first experience with Diablo being a PK...and my friend said "Oh, he's using hacks."
So I learned about hacks as well in gaming that day. Pks and cheats in the same day? Oh thanks Diablo. So my friend pulled in some hacks of his own and came back to find the guy and slaughtered him while I cheered in the background. Good times.
Diablo had been out for a while and soon after I discovered it D2 came out and changed everything. My little brothers all got into the game and played it nonstop even though they were in maybe 3rd grade at the time. We all had to take turns swapping computer use back then, yet D2 was so good that it was fun to just sit and watch and discuss the game as someone played it.
Been hooked to the franchise ever since and want to play D3 with all 3 of my brothers when it finally lands. 4 player coop has never been a family event, but I'm pretty sure D3 will make it one for me.
Diablo was the first pc game i ever played. I remember the first time beat the game on normal mode and then my character shoved the soul stone into his forehead. i was dumbfounded. i couldn't believe that i had never seen anything that cool in my life. i was officially hooked and the first Diablo was one of my favorite games of all time

Hooked for life.

In D2 it is probably the fight against Diablo himself.
Hm, maybe it's time for a D1 replay. If your damn char could just run faster.
