The cool-factor just went down a notch with the latest news from Bashiok, telling the Diablo community about their drawback of deathanimations.
However, this might change in later hotfixes and/or expansions:
Unfortunately we never managed to get these implemented. They were a really cool idea, but a pretty huge amount of work. The one we showed of the siegebreaker was a scripted sequence we set up specifically for that video. It was never implemented, and never actually worked without someone sitting there typing in a bunch of commands to get it all to fire off properly. It’s still something we’d like to do, though.
All things considered there are just higher priority tasks sometimes. We’d love, for example, to have the monk display his weapons during all of his skill animations. But it’s an enormous animation and effects investment to get it done, and we have to weigh all of these things against other features and polish. A lot of the skills we could improve have multiple animation sets, multiplied twice for each gender, and then multiplied by each weapon type he can equip. That can be 40 or more unique animations, and then there’s a full FX pass, approvals, QA testing, etc. etc. and that’d just be for 1 skill.
We have our wish lists, but it’s a balancing act of resources. Ideally our choices when balancing go toward setting realistic limitations, and producing the best game possible.
One wonders what exactly they have been doing. The number of features that were described in the original pre release teaser that are now "non functional" or outright removed is growing by the day.

This is true of every single game development I have ever followed. Expecting anything else is foolish at best.
They are going to test things, and get reactions. They, at the time, had no way of knowing they were not going to be able to get around to it or not. Im glad they were able to show us that at least... tho.. I am super sad that it wont be in live.. thats one of the things I was looking forward to, just truly epic thihngs in boss fights like that.
But from what they have said, boss fights should still be epic in other ways
Its becoming more and more apparent that this game is going to be nothing more than a glorified D2 with RMAH added.
Seems to me this whole year delay has been nothing more that a delay to implement the RMAH system. One could say that the actual game of Diablo 3 is already a couple years old. Its certainly not "next gen", nothing apart from the RMAH that is.
I dont give a fuck about not having Death animations, that was justa cool add-on feature. But if this game ships and it's missing skill animations just because the class is using a different weapon that is just unacceptable, I'm sorry but that should've been top priority. None of this bullshit changing the runesystem it was fine before, just finish your damn animation. This game is seriouslly going to be lacking if the monk can't use a dai bo and have it show in his skills. That to me is just pointless and this is getting out of hand with the shit they are cutting back to release the game.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
The death animations never really made the game for me. I would not mind seeing enemies have moon physics like we do when they die. As for Tenhi's comment on monk lacking weapon animations , weapon animations would be cool but I don't mind how things are now. The weapon animations could be in a patch or something along that line .
Don't all the other classes have skill animations with their weapons? I've definitely seen wizards launching magic missiles from a swinging sword.
The worst part about the monk animations isn't that the animations themselves don't exist, is that when the monk uses a skill the weapons "Disappear" so to speak and go back to being sheathed and/or on his back but when he's in between skills the weapons magically appear in his hands, ready to be used.
The whole process is:
Weapons out, ready to attack!
Use a skill! Weapons Holstered!
Small time between another skill! Weapons in your hands!
Use a skill! Weapons Holstered!
Repeat...
It looks amazingly terrible for an AAA Blizzard game.
By death animations, does he mean special finishers like the Siegebreaker eating the guy's head or normal deaths caused by random monsters throughout the world?
Special finishers, such as the head being bit off - it was all scripted for a video with no real intention to actually have it in the game.. (Least not yet, who knows?).

I dont really care for the Death Animations... yeah they would be cool but its not that important for me. Then again that a class lacks 90% of its animations is lame. I dont understand how they can create a class that lacks almost all its attack animations... the only animated weapons are fist weapons <_< And thats only because they use the same animations that the normal fists use (i.e. the basic animation).
They develope this game for years now.. and the monk was announced when? 2009? Thats 3 Years of developement and the monk still lacks animations <_<
FFFuuuuuuu!!!
Please, please finish the monks animations! atleast for the Monk only weapons... atleast... please.... *sobs*

[Legendary Bow of Epic Awesomeness that Kills Things]
Wow I cant believe what I am reading. How can Blizz possibly release a game or even talk about being in a polishing phase when one (of only 5) characters does not even have attack animations for weapons. That is such a huge thing to be missing from a game...
This just seems ridiculous. We have been waiting for the game for YEARS because we were lead to believe that they were taking their time to ensure that D3 is worthy of being the followup to one of the greatest games ever made. Now all of a sudden they are cutting features out of the game and trying to rush a product to market? This does not sound like blizzard anymore :/
I fee that the game has had to sacrifice a lot of what it could have had because the rune system is such a huge bitch to implement.
Well that is disappointing to read about the monk animations. The death animations would be a nice extra touch, but I definitely did not feel that they were a core part of the game (although I did expect them after the first peak at D3). I guess I don't really understand how it works over there - if they're spending all this time on the RMAH or figuring out how runes drop or whatever, surely those aren't the same people who would be making animations for the monk skills?

Fine okey, they did not have the time to fix it, but I do not think they will fix this later on at all actually.
No biggy, and I can live without it but much have bin "put aside". Dont know what I feel about that.
