Lets say, in theory, the release date is June 11th (I just picked my birthday, this is all hypothetical).
Would you rather have the release date be announced now, knowing you'd have to wait 5 and 1/2 months for it to come out OR Have the release date announced June 1st and have to wait 10 days?
I personally would rather wait until June 1st and only have to wait 10 days. Having an official release date that is 5 months away would be brutal.
Edit: Lets make the 2nd option May 25th so that everyone has at least 2 weeks notice to put their vacation time in for work.. =)
Having the release date now would help ease the anticipation of the game, yes you know that its still 5 months away but at least you know that in 5 months it will be out.
As it stands we have no idea when the game is going to be out, this is why people are getting ansty, not the fact that the game itself isn't "finished" yet.
Personally, it doesn't matter to me when it gets released. Now don't get me wrong, I want to play it just as bad as anyone else. However, I still have 16 months before I graduate and would like to keep my GPA above 3.5 lol.
well, only stupid companies announce thier games that early. Its not wise to announce games to early or too soon for a really anticipated game. The earlier you announce it, the more time there is to tweak things and then get a wild hiar and decide to postpone the game another year. And if too soon, you dont get enough time to advertise to the mass media who arent aware of the game, and in this case, most people are aware. So if anything, they would make an announcment early to release, but not likely.

man, learn to read the OP post first...
I guess you're smarter than Bethesda than, as they announced Skyrim December of 2010, and it came out 11/11/2011. Then again, setting dates and letting people plan around your schedules all sound like bad ideas I guess? Hmm...
Release date now. It would make me feel so much better knowing that the Diablo 3 dev team put their big boy pants on and show that they are sticking to an actual game plan.

Some people tell me I'm going to hell. I just let them know that I've already packed my bags!
I want the release date as soon as physically possible in order to organize my time so that I can avoid my life and play this goddam game!
I find it odd that people always say "release Diablo III as soon as possible"!
Has no-one stopped to think that perhaps for you and other people, "as soon as possible" means right now, but for Blizzard, "as soon as possible" could only be six months from now?
Blizzard works on their own schedule, not ours. Diablo III will be released when it needs to be.

Peter Alexander DzomlijaDo you hear, huh? The Alpha and The Omega? Death and Rebirth? And as you die, so shall I be Reborn...

Woo, yet another person mindlessly quoting Blizzard like it's prophetic or something we haven't heard before. P.S. they are in charge of it, so they could put it out tomorrow if it struck their fancy.

I wasn't quoting Blizzard, so perhaps I could rephrase myself? When I said "Blizzard works on their own schedule", I basically meant the same as you - "They are in charge". Too many people think that the phrase "as soon as possible" means right now, when in fact it could mean a little later, or even several months from now. What part of "as soon as possible" do people no understand?
I'd personally wait another year if I have to for the official release of Diablo III. I've been waiting since the 2008 Worldwide Invitational where the game was first announced. One more year (or a few months if not that long) isn't going to kill anyone...

It's not a failure to understand on our parts, it's a complete failure of communication on theirs. They release a beta in September of last year, after saying all year that they're still planning on getting the game out before the end of 2011, and saying that they anticipate that his beta would be comparatively short to their other ones etc. Then out of the blue they push it back with the tantalizing promise of "early 2012". All the while, adoring fans are getting the shaft by both Blizzard's poor understanding of how to set and follow a deadline, and their inability to effectively communicate with customers as to why their product isn't in their hands already.
This game has been in development for at least five, if not six years or longer. Do you have any idea how many successful games from lesser companies have come out in that time span? Not to mention 3 WoW expansions?
So yes, at this point, "as soon as possible" needs to start meaning what that customers and fans want it to, not what the company who has already been developing a game for double if not triple what the development cycle of a game thinks it should be. End of story.

I plan on building a computer between when they make the announcement and when I pick the game up.
Edit: is this assuming the game is as done as possible without major issues?
