Yes yes, I just contributed with my negative vote.
I think at the end is subjective, and I'd love to have a 'automatically show names for blue items or better' option to turn on regardless of Blizzard's final decision so I don't have the bargain of pressing ALT key, which at the end is what really matters.
The results of this poll are very surprising indeed. With similar games as this I always get a mod to disable white or trash items from dropping as it just clutters the screen and has no purpose. Oh well... I'm sure plenty of blues will drop. The excitement is checking them to see if they are crappy or good. More excitement in that then cluttering the screen with white trash. Heh. White trash.
i voted yes, only because that was the model for d2. its nothing new here dudes.
IMO this is the worst reason to say yes, this isn't D2, its D3. Don't just port stuff over for no reason, you need to work to improve the game. If you want to take models from D2 without analyzing them and trying to improve then don't bother with D3, just go back to playing D2.
Thats still using "it worked so lets leave it" thought process rather then "lets analyze all the systems and see if we can make them better" logic. Thank goodness you aren't designing this game.

That's not a bad thing. A lot of things have been ported from D2 that had no issues such as the Vitality stat, random affixes, and the concept of Acts. Actually, it's entirely possible that more features have remained unchanged than those that have changed. Some systems were borderline "working" such as waypoints, so they got slightly revamped.
But on the topic of these "useless" drops, remember you have to (like Blizzard) compare D3 white quality items to arrows and bolts from D2, not D2 whites as they still had a purpose thanks to runes and imbue. Keeping that in mind, I'm still kind of "huh?"-faced on this matter because even arrows and bolts still technically had a use, albeit extremely minor.
In short, I don't really mind that they made this change. It's simply a psychological effect and it's not going to alter the gameplay in any way (since they'll easily adjust required mats for crafting to account for loss of white materials).
I liked the idea of checking your loot and clicking on the worthless stuff to salvage it... even if it wasn't for much material. Besides, you had the option to leave it on the ground if you didn't want to bother.
I liked being able to salvage everything better than portaling back and forth to town every time your loot bag gets full to visit the blacksmith.

I'm sorry, I thought they DID try to analyze the system and even went so far as to design and introduce a new system.
IMO i think it does. You see all that white drop then BAM.
happy happy joy joy.
This seems to be the most common argument on favor, but think about it, you will have the same feeling by seeing at least something beeing dropped (blue, whatever).
In any case, as I stated, I think putting an option to automatically show only blues & better without having to check with ALT would really satisfy everyone.
has everyone forgotten D1 and D2 already? They had a TON of garbage items, and it was fun because it was like a loot pinata, I'd always be looking for that gold text. If you really 'oppose' this, go play D2 for an hour or so and come back and tell me this isn't exactly what happened in D2.
I do think that seeing a rare drop among tons of white trash makes it a bit more satisfying, so I voted "Yes". But I also think that there must be some whites worth something. I could be looking for an item I can imbue, maybe a specific armor type or weapon for a BS recipe, or maybe some whites that I can sell to a vendor for substantial profit. The point is whites should not be absolutely useless or they will become really annoing.
So you pretty much missed the point of this poll and this thread by about 200%... roger doger!

I understand the logic of improving stuff. I went through college and had to proofread a few hundred papers, prompting a rewrite where necessary, but not everything needs to be rewritten. Experience gives you the ability to recognize what is actually good instead of second guessing yourself all the time. Blizzard didnt make D2, Blizzard North did, so it makes sense that they are second guessing existing systems because they werent the ones who made them to begin with, but even they realized it was a solid idea eventually. Thus the reversion to the original drop system.
When I played D2 in 8-player games I was happy to see the larger loot plops from monsters with yellows and golds mixed in with all the whites, greys, and blue’s, but in D2 playing in 8-player games produced larger loot drops which increased your chances of finding better loot. In D3 multiplayer that is no longer the case, so I don’t see the point of it for D3. More trash for the sake of more trash makes no sense to me.
Im so sleepy so probably shouldnt be posting.. my last post I edited 4 times and still couldnt understand my own post O.O
Anyway, I like the change to white items atm.
During beta.. every item that would drop, I would just salavage, this made blue items that did drop... I really could care less, Yeah there was the random one that was an upgrade.... but once I had some BiS gear... it was like...meh, might as well have been a white.
Now, when I see a blue, ill be like HELL YEAH. Due to whites not being as good as blues (for crafting) this makes me seeing blues drop that much more cool..
thats the basics of why I like it... though.. it will feel a tad bit weird not picking them up to at least sell.. but w/e Ill try it before I knock it in late game.
Well, on the official Diablo 3 forums, someone made a comment that makes a whole lot of sense to me.
Though Blizzard may not come right out and say it, it stands to reason that having completely worthless trash items may be another layer of protection vs botting. If/when bots make it into the game, their inventories will become cluttered with tons of useless white garbage, slowing their farming down enough that Blizzard can pinpoint who's botting and banhammer them before they can influence the game too much.
Whether or not this is the actual reason behind useless trash items, nobody can really say. However, this is the reason I'll personally choose to believe they exist and with that in mind, the white/grey items holding no real value doesn't bother me nearly so much.

Oh pitiful shadow lost in the darkness,
Bringing torment and pain to others.
Your damned soul wallowing in your sin.
Perhaps... it is time to die.
Haven't ARPGs always been this way, crap items with a few gems in between? The way I see it, white items aren't really 'trash', they're just the most basic items, while magic is valuable versions thereof, and rares/legendaries are the cream of the crop.
Also, imagine for a second that only blue items dropped in game. Only blues, all the way, hundreds of them. Later on the experience would grow so horrendous that you wouldn't even pick up blues anymore. You'd only consider it for salvaging purposes. It's stupid to expect good items to become the baseline item, they would become worthless, and you'd have only rares to look forward to.

nope actually, you have fallen prey to the "i keep ugly friends around me so when guys look at me, it makes me more attractive" scheme.
