I quite liked it, even though I knew more or less what to expect. I found the illustrated battled between Heaven and Hell particularly impressive, with its accompanying music. And Diablo has a cameo!
Speaking of cameos, something I haven't seen many people mention is that for the first time Deckard Cain has appeared in a Diablo cinematic. And that leads me neatly to the moral of the trailer: "If you don't pay attention to the lore monkeys, you will be unprepared for the end of all things. As well as huge flaming meteors."
Deckard Cain appeared in the cinematic trailer from 2008
True, I'd forgotten that. Though it appears to be the same footage (Cain turning in his chair), just in a different context. In the original teaser he seemed to be turning to face something that was coming at him fast, and in the opening cinematic he's turning to check on Leah.
Wow all this over a cinematic, wonder what people will argue about when the actual game comes out.
Well, in my honest opinion the intro is fitting. Is it the best intro ever? No, not at all, but it is very fitting. Reason being, the intro depicts about the war between Heaven and Hell, which I'm sure HASN'T happened yet, so the illustration through the book makes sense.(even though it's disappointing cgi imperius/tyrael anyone? <_< )
As for Leah and Cain, the whole "do you believe me?" thing basically sets the tone for the first act. We're seeing the build up of a war set-in-motion that 99.9% of humanity doesn't know about. A meteor from the Heavens implies a couple things to the players a)something happened in the Heavens for a "meteor" to fall, or b)the war between Heaven and Hell had just begun. And Cain disappearing means either he was being targeted or Leah was.(what kind of meteor is that accurate) And in rolls the player finding out about these things, I mean you just saw a meteor fall form the sky . I could go deeper into it but it'll take a couple of pages, lol.
All in all I think it's a great cinematic, could it be better? Yes indeed it should be longer and more deep. But, everyone has their own opinion.

"The righteous shall fall before the wicked, and all of Creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell."
Rather than continue the "fanboy" argument (irrelevant to me, I'm not a "boy" of any type ;)), I'm going to touch on something in Seiyusung22's post:
A meteor from the Heavens implies a couple things to the players a)something happened in the Heavens for a "meteor" to fall, or b)the war between Heaven and Hell had just begun. And Cain disappearing means either he was being targeted or Leah was.(what kind of meteor is that accurate) And in rolls the player finding out about these things, I mean you just saw a meteor fall form the sky .
True. However, it's no ordinary meteor, and that's no random location. It's the precise spot where Diablo was unleashed into Sanctuary, and the "meteor" conveniently slams pretty far down into the ground, to judge by the cinematic. Just about far enough to reach the spot where the actual earth ended and the threshold of Hell began, as old-school Diablo I players will remember. And takes Cain along with it...we know it doesn't kill him, we have to rescue him (again!) first thing.
Perhaps someone who's played through the beta can elaborate, but it seems to me that the "meteor" (and we all know what that is believed to actually be) had a particular target, it would have been Cain. The old boy's tougher than he looks.
Actually I already know(99% sure) what the meteor is all about, I just didn't wanna put any spoilers in there .
To add to what I was saying, there are alot of subtle thing you have to pay attention to in the cinematic. The book that Cain had, was it the "Book of Cain" that we can order or was it the prophecies of the coming War, maybe it had the answers to defeat Diablo who knows.
Second, the panning to the stained glass of Imperius foreshadows events yet to come.
And third, as Tanith stated the meteor lands directly where Diablo 1 started. It shows that something links the meteor to the area where Diablo was first contained. Maybe there is something missing that Diablo had in his possession or maybe there is something that was forgotten.(not gonna spoil it)

"The righteous shall fall before the wicked, and all of Creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell."
I find the cinematic more than suitable to set up the events for the game, storywise if it was expanded more it would have spoiled far too much. I think it leaves enough questions and cliffhangers to keep you engaged - the Prophecy, the Fallen Star, Cain being in peril, and you know that you will fight the real fight really soon. My favorite part of the cinematic, was when Cain asked Leah if she believes him, you definitely see her confusion and disbelief in her eyes. I beg your pardon, but you can't call that's soulless.
And I cannot speak for others, but to me it really does feel that most people who 'defend' the new cinematics either really are fanboys and can't stand to hear anything bad about d3 or blizz in general, or simply haven't seen better since they are young, never played older blizz games, trolling etc.
I guess that the nostalgic hipster argument is as valid as the fawnboi argument.
The cinematic is very good on his own, certainly a lot of hard work and passion, was put into it, as with the rest of Blizzard's products (you can see that at the BlizzCon panels), it was not just a quick mock-up accompanied with cutting the budget. Comparing it to previous work that influenced you deeper won't stand for ever, because this cinematic requires recognition too, just because it's not what you've expected doesn't make it bad. I think some people are just building up to this moment and are just looking for an occasion to unleash the negativity towards anything that "is not like the old stuff". No matter what they get, they will complain, and that's when the border between constructive criticism and baseless negativity is crossed.
I agree, personally I loved the art style, they seemed very Diablo-esque...its not always about graphics....as with this cinemagraphic masterpiece

Blizzard used to care about releasing Diablo III, then they all took an arrow in the knee...
The illustrations were a nice touch and very well done, but honestly. If they rendered actual angels and actual demons, you all would have thought it would have been even more epic. I'm guessing Blizzard wanted her to be dreaming an illustration sequence, but if it was her dreaming about a live action sequence, I would have liked it more. I enjoyed the cropped black soulstone cinematic A LOT more.
Another thing about this opener that makes it fall flat with me is that the D2 opener was just superior in every aspect. Sure, this one didn't have to beat D2's, but it should have come close. D2's opener had characters you could embrace and relate to. The midget waiter was comic relief, the wanderer had the nostalgia and badass factor, the drunks and the skeletons, etc etc. Cain was great and all, but all we have is a girl that doesn't talk too much and a meteor. I kinda feel like Diablo 3 should be emphasizing this meteor more as an actual character. Maybe they should have put more emphasis on it since they decided to go with it and Tristram as the setting. All the meteor is is just an object and a basic hole in the ground. I'm not expected the end of act 1 to be that much more epic. The meteor could just end up being the black soulstone and there will be a boss fight.

Some people tell me I'm going to hell. I just let them know that I've already packed my bags!
This is going to be an eternal argument/debate of those who want D3 to be a D2 replica with new graphics vs. those who play and love D3 for what it is. You will never sway each other to one side, but the movies were both equally good for its time. I personally was pleased with the intro to D2 and graphics during that generation of hardware/software, and I'm equally moved and intrigued by the movies and what's to come with D3.
I'm perfectly fine with not having an entirely painted picture laid in front of me for an intro movie with D3. All I gather from it is that Hell is coming with a tireless vengeance versus the forces of Heaven, and we're there to help decide the outcome. That's all I need to keep me interested.
Theres no direct or indirect violence or gore in that cinematic. It might sound very silly but what builds up the mood in Diablo games is violence. Butchered copses scattered... Used torture instruments laying there... blood stained dungeons...
A meteor and drawing doesn't sets the mood for a Diablo game and thats one of the problems. Meteors sets the mood for scifi fiction, not dark fanatasy ultra gore.
It's loike you know Hell is coming but don't know how bad it is.
I'll admit I am a fan of the Arthas story in the warcraft universe in general, I loved the environment and cinematic, I'm not a fan of twilight but I'm a sucker for bashing undead with a holy weapon. With that said I also really like some of the stuff in sc2. While I only played the campaign long enough to get out of it what I could get out of it, much of that was from the cinematic scenes. I'll just go ahead and put this out there too, though it's probably already been said (I don't have the time to read 11 pages of posts right now), that there will be more cinema to come in the diablo universe, not just in this game but also in the expansions, and I feel like the story and cinematics will just improve more and more the more involved and in depth the story gets, or at least I hope they do. Blizzard is big enough now that they can place more focus on the actual story and cinema in general.
I think bashiok put it well when he said (though this was talking about the gameplay) that blizzard doesn't have to design the most realistic looking game for the current point in time, because that's not what their games are, they're meant to be playable by basically anyone who has a computer at all, and they're meant to last through the ages, unlike your typical game with tons of DLC or spawns a new game every year. I know from a fact that over time wow did get slightly better video features and options, I wouldn't be surprised to see (thanks to the RMAH) diablo be updated a bit here or there every couple years.
If you're not a blizzard or diablo fan boy, I really have no idea what you're doing here racking up a post count on a site called "diablo fans". You're not really bringing up a point by stating someone is a fan of a franchise which has impressed them in the past for having made great games. They're a fan because they like the products because they're quality products they've come to depend on, not because they love the staff or some random reason only a loser would care about. Of course they're a fan of the game, who isn't, and if you're not, why are you here.
Would you be so kind and tell me/link me your favourite cinematic from Blizz games? Maybe a top 3? I somehow doubt Diablo 3 intro is among them.
And I cannot speak for others, but to me it really does feel that most people who 'defend' the new cinematics either really are fanboys and can't stand to hear anything bad about d3 or blizz in general, or simply haven't seen better since they are young, never played older blizz games, trolling etc.
I'd really like for people to be sincere, you know, take 20 minutes of their time, watch d2 intro, Hellscream death from W3, WoW vanilla intro and LK intro, and then watch this D3 soulless stuff and honestly say they like it better.
My three fave cinematics so far by Blizzard are actually,
1. The Betrayl - SC2. This is by far my favorite so far. It shows so much emotion and actual moves the story and gives you a sense of "DAMN! HOW CAN HE DO THAT THOUGH?!" and it shows action while not over producing anything. The part where the Hydralisk comes through the wall and she turns around and blows off it's fang is highly detailed and absolutely magnificent it is action packed and awesome.
2. The Act 3 Cutscene which really hit the mark. It is action packed to the brim and beautifully done for its time. Not only that It moves the story quite well and shows how Baal was released into this world, or at least the impending doom that is upon marius. IT leaves and ends with a sense of urgency in Tyraels request. IT makes the story epic because now we have Angels coming down to kill the primes but even they falter.
3.Black Soulstone. I watched this about 5 different times on the day of release and have watched it many more times since. Everytime i just get epic nerdchills down my spine. It is absolutely awesome, the effects are amazing and it moves that story along great. I dont understand how you can say their quality has diminished over just a few cutscenes. Black soulstone was perfect, the effects the lighting the action the story the epicness. Hell this one comes to a close with a legion of demons rising up and moving towards bastions keep i assume while walking by a kneeling crying leah. That's pretty epic if you ask me. The SC2 cutscenes were only meant to show action when needed but beyond that those cutscenes were merely there to move the story along to the action, most of the SC2 action comes from within the missions, I mean you can argue that Zeratul's Warning is a highly action packed and epic cutscene showing why you need to win this fight over kerrigan and the zerg. cause if ya don't expect to be annihilated by em.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
I think the original WoW cinematic was awesome. Doesnt get much praise. Makes you want to play the game, thats what a cinematic should do. I didnt feel that with the latest D3 one.
Honestly, I believe the opening cinematic did what it was supposed to do. Leave us wanting more.
It didn't do that for me. It left me thinking I didn't want to see another short video with Leah dropping to her knees at the end.
Same here bro, you know after watching skyrim cinematic I would expect something just as good from blizzard, instead we have this top model like chick having an acid trip.
Or "I don't like it because I know people will like it"
