Basically, from what I understand, "Regretsy" was accepting donations for Secret Santa gifts. These gifts were for poor kids who probably wouldn't be getting anything for Christmas. Regretsy was using the "Donate" button that PayPal provides and that you see all over the web on many, many sites. Apparently PayPal had a problem with this and forced Regretsy to refund all the donations.
This is all relevant to Diablo 3 because of the RMAH. Blizzard will be letting players "cash out" their real money into their PayPal accounts and only their PayPal accounts.
So what do you guys think? Is PayPal the right choice to handle the cash out funds?
Do you know of a better alternative that is equally familiar to most people having done online payments and doesn't require hundreds of different pay-out systems for the different regions and countries in the world? The answer, I'm guessing is "No".
So... whereas PayPal ain't a corporation descended to Earth from the righteous heavens, I believe it's still the best party to do this kind of payment system with.
Google Checkout and Amazon Webpay look like the best alternatives.
Blizzard should be aiming for the best possible customer service when it comes to the RMAH. It's a huge deal and if PayPal mismanages it, it'll blow up in their faces.
I'm sorry, are you expecting financial institutions NOT to act purely in their own self-interest? If so, I'm afraid a harsh re-appraisal of American corporate governance is required.
I refuse to use the RMAH because it's against my personal beliefs. But either way, we all know the table is tilted.. those who like the RMAH and forgive the obvious profiteering are the ones who believe they can tilt the table back towards themselves. Maybe they're right. I don't care.

In regaurds to this, the last statement. Paypal has been, at sometimes, over zealous in it's security about things on locking out accounts for a lot of similar transfers (say 20+ $1.00 transfers because it sends out a red flag). So while this doesn't make them things necessary bad, in talking about Pay Pal, it could arise and I hope they are ready for this, system wise at the game's launch.
Note: A way to avoid this is to do one weekly withdrawl, or bi-monthly (twice a month). Not only do you get more money in your account at one time, you pay a ever smaller fee per the larger amount of money you take out (in percentage terms).
I think there is going to be a reason behind this regretsy case that isn't shared by regretsy for obvious reasons, and not by PayPal for professional and legal reasons. It would be the first time I ever heard of something like that about PayPal.
I'm not worried a single bit, I've used PayPal for years now and never had any problems what so ever.
That said I'd like to see additional cash-out options though.
More services are always welcome, but you have to believe to some extents Pay Pal made an offer to be the Third-Party, and maybe paid "X percent more" or lowerd their fee per transfer to be the only one for a certain time frame. Just a thought.
Paypal would be the only service I would trust tbh.
Agreed.
I think most people trust paypal. What you don't trust is the nameless group of jerks that try to hack your paypal account.
On a somewhat unrelated note, I never suggest anyone to link their bank account to their paypal. If you do, you better be combing through every single bill and statement just in case.
