I guess I should stop using logic and reasoning, and I too should just formulate my opinion on baseless nothings I pull from a dark smelly orifice.
Ohh wait....
I played Wizard extensively pre and post Patch 5, and I can say that Wiz is nerfed significantly. I actually had easier time leveling DH than Wizard yesterday <_< I admit electrocute was OP, but now its almost useless. Wave of Force is still good, Arcane orbs too (just uses way too much mana). Main single target spell now is Magic Missile...
Its sad that there is no good Signature spell left. When we get actually good Single target spells like Ray of Frost with Golden runestone, nobody will bother with any Signature spell (unless you "melee wizard" :hehe:).
If Blizz will leave Aoe and Signature spells for launch like it is now, I might not play Wizard after all. Hopefully devs will reconsider, they often do roller coaster changes.
Runeless Arcane Orb was about the only thing to escape the nerf bat....well except melee skills like wave of force, which was buffed.
Heck a lot of the ranged wizard skills are like that now, in fact some of the skills dmg are so low that it almost seems pointless to even put runes in them....
Heck, I would consider some of those Rank4s downgrades. And by some, I mean everything except Lightning Hydra, which is only a 6% dmg increase, ROFL!!!
And this is Rank4 FFS, I would be scared what a Rank 1 would look like!!!
And what might be even scarier is the unattuned rune system picks your skill at random. So there exists a good probability to actually DOWNGRADE the skill you want to upgrade.
I thought this too when I first glanced at the numbers, but after reading the full rune descriptions I see why the percentages drop. The base fire hydra does the most direct damage, but the runes modify it so the hydras do different types of damage. Check it out:
Fire hydra - 35% direct damage
Arcane hydra - 28% splash damage
Frost hydra - 32% damage, shorter range, but it's frost damage so it slows everything
Firewall hydra - 18% damage as a firewall
Lightning hydra - 41% lightning damage
Poison hydra - 23% poison damage per second for enemies that step in the acid pool
So all in all, it should even out.
What does it matter what type of dmg it does? That is completely irrelevant, unless you have proof that fire dmg is inferior to say arcane. I am assuming you dont.
And remember these are RANK 4's. What would Rank1's be?
Maybe...
Arcane hydra - 22% splash damage
Frost hydra - 26% damage, shorter range, but it's frost damage so it slows everything
Firewall hydra - 12% damage as a firewall
Lightning hydra - 36% lightning damage
Poison hydra - 17% poison damage per second for enemies that step in the acid pool
I am probably being generous with Lightning hydra, but I am assuming it wont actually drop below fire hydra, being a single target spell as well. Fire hydra does about 50% more dmg , so I dont care if fire hydra shoots turds, it is far superior to those other 4 RUNED hydra.

At around the 10~20minute mark on part 2 of the monk/witch doctor stream, he changes weapons and the damage % for the skill changes as well. Which indicates that all of this number crunching on the talent calculators are meaningless. Because the damage % of the skills fluctuate with the weapon speed and we do not have the all the numbers at the moment.
WALL OF EXPLANATION TEXT
(I'm just pulling most of these numbers outta my ass these are not accurate; most of which are based on footage I saw of beta streams, so someone put another example if you can)
So say if you have a 2-handed Staff that does 50dps and on the other hand you have a 1-hander that does 35dps with an orb off-hand which adds 10% damage to Wizards. Let's say a Magic Missile does 110 % damage with a 2.50 second weapon speed, then the percent damage is higher for a Wizard using a weapon that has a 1.50 second weapon speed probably around 160ish %. So crunching the numbers you should be pretty balanced in terms of Damage Per Second on the skills between them. The only trade-off is the 1-hander does much less damage but has more stats with the off-hand, faster proc fishing, as well as better mobility with hit and runs. Whereas the 2-hander, has a much stronger base damage hit on every spell, higher (DOTs) damage over time spells, as well as having stronger summons.
Most beta testers in right now should be able to confirm this that the % changes for Witch Doctors and Wizards depending on the weapon speed.
Point being, again, it's still the BETA. Trying to crunch these numbers this early while not having all the information and inaccurate percentages will do no good right now.

You are applying logic and reasoning based upon assumptions. No matter how much logic or reasoning you use, it's still being pulled from a dark smelly orifice because you are still basing your opinion on "baseless nothings".
You can't complain about nerfs unless you've played the new build. I can say that while things look like they were nerfed for the wizard, with the change to weapon damage my patch 5 Wizard is doing about 20dps more than my patch 4 Wizard (who had almost all crafted gear and was 2 levels higher).
Edit: Still using a Wand as well. Had a shortsword equipped for a while until I found a wand that compared to the sword's dps.
Thank you EvilMunkey. Now Mystic, this is logic and reasoning based upon something factual. And frankly, it's the same thing I've read from numerous people on multiple forums.
So, feel free to play the part of today's Chicken Little. It's entertaining.
LoL man man man, too much bs nonsense. i'm absolutely SMASHING everything on my wizard right now... shes lvl 13 and has some decent gear, with 150 dps from the char sheet...
I don't know what you are saying about the DH being easier, I actually found the DH to be REALLY slow at the start and every other class was great fun, with the wizard being my quickest run through...

As opposed to...?
You are currently pulling baseless factoids out of your smelly orifice. Or do you actually work at Blizzard? You don't know what goes through their thought process, do you? This is not a release version of the game, or are you trying to tell me that they can't try wild extreme changes for the sake of testing? They're still balancing the game, if the Wizard is not up to par when the game is release, then by all means you have the right to moan until the the sun shines no more. But for now they are merely testing the game, so chill out.
well except melee skills like wave of force, which was buffed.
How exactly is wave of force a melee skill? I guess it will be very useful for a melee build, but I intend to use it on my arcane caster build to nuke small mobs and even try a freeze group nuke build. It's personal aoe and I wouldn't specifically call it 'melee'.
Only much later in game when you are trying to regenerate AP.
But they've already said that the early game is dead easy, and most creatures die after one shot as it is. So, it's not really a problem then.
Again, you are freaking out about them trying extensive changes on a prelaunch build of the game, they are still trying to balance stuff out. And the game will definitely be undergoing fine tuning way after release as well.
So why exactly are you screaming for them to delete the Wizard if they are still in the process of testing the class?
all these people saying "beta is beta". while thats a great point, they should be saying "your only playing the first 1/48th of the game" (1/3rd of act 1 x 4 acts x 4 difficulties)
