Ok, well i've been thinking about this little dilemma I have with the end-game of Diablo 3. So far what it consists of is:
The challenges of Inferno
PvP
Item Farming
But what happens if you are not in it for the PvP and you have gotten the best items you think you could get (or you just have gotten bored of item farming - which I know is pretty damn hard hehe). Don't get me wrong, I loved item farming in Diablo 2, but I was quite a bit younger than and surprisingly now, I get bored quicker from doing the same thing over and over again no matter how fun it turns out to be. There are very few games that I can bare to play twice; once I finish a game once i'm usually done with it. I know Diablo 3 will be different, but honestly, after I have played through all the character and have done a decent amount of item farming, what is left?
Now DLC's will come into the equation and be a lot of fun, but they are only every 3 years (according to Blizzard) - so what do you do in between that time?
So my idea is that, being that Diablo 3 is innovating almost everything of Diablo 2, Blizzard needs to have an extra end-game path for some players (I know the current end-game will satisfy me for at LEAST a year of achieving it... but I only have this concern due to the fact that Blizzard games are built on longevity).
I could be wrong on how fun item farming turns out to be, and I would not in the slightest be surprised of that... But what if its not?
What do you guys think about end game?
And how do you think it can be improved if you think it needs improving? What features would you add to the end-game (could be through DLCs)?
When you take into consideration the RMAH, the loot farming can be alot more beneficial. Since Inferno difficulty will be "where its at", I, myself, will be farming Inferno as much as I can once i hit lvl cap. As really good finds can mean more money in my pocket.
Having said that I dont beleive that loot farming will be as quick and easy as it was back in Diablo 2. We quickly became bored because we would start our "MF" runs and each run would take about 10 minutes to complete. I dont see that happening at all in Diablo 3. Blizz has said numerous times that Inferno difficulty will make most of us cry at times. So who knows how long it will take before some of us get to the point where we are facerolling inferno difficulty. I really dont see any of us getting bored with this end game content. But thats just my opinion.
PvP looks like it will be alot more interesting and involve alot more strategy as opposed to previous Diablo games. The arena looks pretty sweet and the 3vs3 and 4vs4 battles looks like alot of fun.
It'll be interesting to see what all acheivements are available to..acheive. Blizz mentioned today at Blizzcon that the more things you accomplish with your character the better your banner looks.
So in my opinion from what ive seen so far with the game, I really dont see the end game getting boring for quite some time.
Well, I'm going to get out and say: When you reached the end of the game, maybe its time to put it down and let it rest. If doing it all over sounds fun then go ahead, with friends, D2 is still fun to redo.
But once you're done, you're done. I mean, D2 always had so much randomness but its still that one game that I went through completely (never farmed or anything, just played), and eventually you finish it and you move on.
In my eyes, thats just what games should be. Blizzard loves to try and suck people in the same game until forever, but that never worked for me. A game has a beginning, and it has an end. I put it down, and I come back months, if not years later.
The only reason a game lasts longer really is just because you're wasting tremendous amount of time on it. Its easy as a kid to get absorbed in a game like D2 and just keep doing it. But reality is that eventually, if a game is lasting forever, its because its wasting your time, and you're running on addiction. I'm not saying you're dangerously addicted if you keep playing 1 hour a day because it still satisfies you, but you know.
I don't see just one game. I see plenty. Some people have been waiting for D3 a long time, and some people have lived of almost nothing but Diablo. I can understand they kind of want it to last forever, but again, its not supposed to last forever.
So what could they add to the game? They could add content. Anything they had is finite, and will present the same eventual problem. We'll get expansions to freshen it up a few times. Take it for what it is. You can only eat so much chocolate.

too many people question this and beat it to death and freak out. but this game is 10x better then D2 and 90% of people in d2 just loot farmed and made characters. which is exactly what D3 is going to be with some extra stuff. so no need to worry about anything, diablo is diablo.
I don't understand people's obsession with an "end game" The end game for me is when I get a character through Inferno difficulty and figure that I've seen everything there is to see in the game, see that I've spent 200 hours or something on the game and then go play something else. The idea that the game has to have an end game that keeps you entertained forever is a pipe dream. Play the game until you're not interested anymore then stop.
Man, I remember when no game had an "end game" you could either play it again from the beginning or buy a new game. That was pretty much it, now all games have to keep you interested forever. I feel sorry for Blizzard designers, they have created a monster!
The answer is obvious. Competition. Inherent in competition is a ranking system and an enjoyable format to compete in (not necessarily perfectly "balanced"). Enter "competition modes." There's an option for literally every type of player (both PvP and PvM).

... i totally agree with your view here...
a game for me has a beginning, and an end... i have stopped playing Diablo 2 many years ago, and i dont plan to ever starting it again... there is not only Diablo in my life...
I agree there's more to life then Diablo, and what not, but the way you agreed to him... Are you implying you only play games once through(and then what sell them, in other words be gone with them)?
Something tells me you never played a game you actually really liked then(lol It's like some of the friends I have whom think movies, nomatter how good they are, is only worth watching once). Granted you may not want to do two runthroughs back to back, but come on, are you telling me you have no desire to play through a game again like a year or so later?

Lol that was pretty long ago, because even a bunch of NES games had an endgame(and if you want to get technical, so did the more popular Atari 2600 games, granted it only consisted of beat X high score/2 player VS mode, but still).

Blizzard confirmed in their panels this weekend that there is hidden content for the endgame, and that if endgame really does feel boring to the players, that they are open to (and it sounds like they're already planning) more content to be patched in later.
I'm imagining something similar to the Uber-Tristram from D2.

That is true, but it could also be seen both ways: Why have people stopped playing D2? - Doesn't solve anything does it?

Hardcore Classic ladder =) Been fun for 10+ years.
Diablo 2 a great game. What if diablo 3 is not as good (touch wood)? Then it would need a unique end game component.
