I'm going to flame you to hell if I try to answer you in any serious manner. You're telling me you put the blame of this on the gaming communities and all the amazing things they have done, all the progress it has allowed. You have no damn clue what you're attacking.
I know the modding community have done some pretty amazing stuff, but are you serious? It's far more destructive for companies to take the chance these days. And saying that DRM and online-only gaming is not to be blamed on the community is just pure ignorance. Progress, maybe, but how many companies have had to shut down because of poor sales from amazing games, just because of hacked leaks? Games that will never have their sequels see the light of day because thereof.
Imagine you create something, which so-called 'fans' then steal and release to the public, before you can do so. It's outrageous and disgusting. It's intellectual property theft.
So, you threaten to flame someone to hell for pointing this out to you? I know you have a Rise Against avatar, but if you want to be part of the civilized, adult world and have a decent conversation, then you're gonna have to check that teenage, rebel attitude at the door.
Well actually that's only partly true(with PC games in general, but in the case of D3 specifically, I wouldn't be surprised if 50% or more of their reason was due to hacking/modding things that so shouldn't be modded in the first place), most of the companies that are pulling the DRM/Online only BS, are strictly doing it, because they don't like the fact there's a 2nd market.
If companies don't like the 2nd Market, they should do 2 things: "NEVER" stop making the game(80% of the 2nd market exists, because the games are out of print), and the other thing is, don't make crappy games, then very few games would be resold while the game is still being supplied.
I am now convinced, Blizzard is actually "trying" to make a subpar game. Hell, It's either that or they're just being super lazy(thus they are purposely wasting time, until release).
Again don't give me that BS(do you work for Blizzard or something, because you sound just like them). WTF is wrong with the new crafting format(or the original rune system for that matter) for lv 5,6, and 7, oh yea that's right, nothing, infact It's as good as a system you can have, now move on.
No, the older Blizzard games lasted 10 years, because they actually put effort into the gameplay(lol yet the older games didn't take this long to make).
Also there are other developers that made games that have lasted for 10 years too, so don't even try to claim Blizzard is the only one.
Wow - go look up the word petulant - they've posted your pic there. This is not a group of people who got together with the expressed intent of annoying you - they work for a FOR PROFIT company - quite frankly what would have been more typical of a software game company would be to force the product out the door in time for Q4 holiday sales - bugs, shitty mechanics or boring gameplay all included for no charge. The fact that they are taking their time speaks VOLUMES about how much they care about releasing quality products instead of cashing in on an established brand.

um, they never release games in Q4, because Blizzard is scared of competition, that's the only reason It's not being released in Q4, and hello there are gonna be a ton of crappy mechanics in this game when released(the dumbed down systems say hi, and there are alot of them), so I find it funny you actually think Blizzard is trying to develop a good game.
Wasting time on a mechanic that was perficially fine originally is pointless, and you must be joking to stand up for a company that spends "MONTHS" screwing around with such a minor mechanic.

Something doesn't have to be complicated to be fun and engaging.
There is actually MORE depth to the new skill system over the one from D2. In D2 you picked skills/passives for your build. You were FORCED to waste points in skills you didn't even want to take in order to reach the ones that fit your build. In D3 you pick skills/passives to fit your build; then you pick runes to further customize your build. You're not forced into take anything (aside from the obvious early-game when you only have access to limited skills). Also, crafting is definitely more fleshed out from D2 (if you could even consider the Hordric Cube/Runewords crafting).
By the way, I'm not disagreeing with you (mostly). It definitely feels like they simplified certain aspects of the game and it DOES seem like they are reading way too much into how runes work; but is it such a bad thing that they made the game more forgiving and accessable? It seems to me that Blizzard is trying to appeal to a wider range of players and I think it's great if I, as a diehard Blizzard fan, reap some benefits along the way.
EDIT: Accidently hit Submit Post before I was done typing >_<
The skill rune system will be make-or-break for D3. The devs are literally putting all the responsibility of character customization into the rune system.
Saying that it makes no difference what rune system they choose is an utterly baffling and indefensible point of view.
That said, I know where your anger is coming from. Every time I hear about re-writes and development churn, the pre-ape hulk smash part of my brain goes plaid. Then I remember how hard it is, and how long it takes, to create great art (or great anything for that matter), and I calm down a bit. It's a good sign they're taking this long. There are no shortcuts to quality.
Look we're all rabid over this game. It's fine to vent, but that's what blogs are for.

"Wrath of the Lich King was released on November 13, 2008, selling 2.8 million copies within the first 24 hours of availability. This made it the fastest selling computer game of all time"
Cataclysm was officially released on December 7, 2010. It holds the distinction as the fastest selling PC game
The two fastest selling PC games of their time says hi.
I'd say Blizzard is pretty confident when it comes to game releases, and something like December competition isn't even a blip on their radar. In fact, it's the best time to release games, so I'd say pushing to earlier - a dry spell in comparison - is a much riskier move.
Also, if you think the rune system is a pointless mechanic, then you are a fool. As it stands, it is the main driving point of customization, and something they need to get down perfectly. And deciding between town swapping or not is just as important. Going back to town or swapping on the fly will change the flow of gameplay considerably and might make a large dent on the fun factor, which is damn important. A game is supposed to be fun, wouldn't you say?

Read carefully, not the rune system as a whole, I was literally talking about how obtaining runes was handled(which is what they keep mainly changing).
To Azjenco: Those aren't games, those are expansions for a already released game, there's a differance.
also the way obtaining the runes specifically, not the whole rune system its self.
Yes, but the thing is as far as systems go, very little effort has gone into this game at all(and they don't seem to have any intentions of actually trying to improve the game, combined with the fact that they have no idea WTF they are doing sigh, which they even admitted to.
To Azjenco: Those aren't games, those are expansions for a already released game, there's a differance.
Considering how much they change WoW as a whole, they can very easily be considered games. Diablo and WoW were released just prior to Christmas as well. As many others have said, Blizzard doesn't shoot for a particular time of year to release their games. They'll release a game when it's ready, and their very diverse release history is easily proof enough of that. Frankly, saying Blizzard is scared to release a game in Q4 is simply absurd and completely without any basis.
Yes, but the thing is as far as systems go, very little effort has gone into this game at all(and they don't seem to have any intentions of actually trying to improve the game, combined with the fact that they have no idea WTF they are doing sigh, which they even admitted to.
So you claim that they have put very little effort into the game and don't care about improving it or making it good...riiight. A game company known for excellent games and has a history of waiting to release something "when it's done" is going to purposely lay an egg with Diablo 3.
Just going by your statements, it's safe to see that you don't have any development experience at all. Ask any app or game dev if they have everything set in stone 3-6 months before their product is to be released. You make that claim to them and they'll laugh in your face. The only difference is Blizzard is extremely open with their dev process where other companies aren't. You don't see the entire process, but I guarantee MS, Apple, EA, etc are still busy making decisions on products that are still 3-6 months away. That's a ton of dev time.
Now that they aren't releasing D3 until next year, along with improving/fixing the issues that caused them to push back from their desire to release in 2011, they are able to go back and make sure everything is done how they want. The fact that they are even rethinking such a small thing as how Runes are obtained is proof that they really do care about the game and want to get it right.
Yet again, your hatred of Blizzard is resulting in silly statements and you derailing yet another thread. It's getting old seeing you jump in random threads and start spouting off about how Blizzard and Diablo 3 suck. Super job!

True, but expansions always sell less than the actual game, which makes sense, since players have already left. That means that the expansions sold to already established players, not anyone new. Arguably, we are talking about WoW, the biggest MMO at the moment, as well as the last few years, which actually proves Blizzard's competence.
Then again, I doubt Blizzard was worried about SC2, the sequel to the best selling RTS game of all time, and Diablo 3, sequel to the best ARPG ever created.
Secondly, what you said there is quite ignorant. "very little effort has gone into this game " Really? Have you actually watched any of the BlizzCon panels? Just from the Demon Hunter you can see all the iterations they went through to get to the current incarnation. Just to get the class perfect. With the skill system they actually implemented a skill point system, tested the hell out of it, then implemented a respec system, tested the hell out of it, and finally settled on the current system, after they tested the hell out of it.
Blizzard have always taken their time, going about game systems from all angles to see which works best, before deciding what works best, and, most importantly, is the most fun. They have the money that other companies lack, so they can actually do stuff like that without pushing their games out prematurely. They don't sit on their asses, which you'd know if you follow footage and blogs where they explain their design more in depth.
So, you probably dislike some of their design choices, and have deep seated hatred towards Blizzard because thereof. From the way you talk about D3, you probably hate it and wont buy it (which makes me wonder why you bother flaming it). However, you should give respect where it is due, Blizzard employees work their asses off and it shows in the amount of polish their products display.
Skill swapping whenever, or just going to town is for baddies... Hmmm I'll use my heavy aoe smashing build to clear this place out then hearth at the boss put my DMG CDs on and my single target burners and pop back down to fight him?
If you want this you are a vagina.
You are probably bad at Mario, used warp whistles and bought a strategy guide for duckhunt.
You probably want the drop rate for ledgendaries to be 99%.
Honestly, it's diablo, u have to be locked into some type of build. Can almost guarantee respec will be a gold sink. The new randomized rune system is badass, once again people expect everything that drops to be usefull cuz they are wow players who get "phatty purps" everytime they down a raid boss.
If changing your skills can be done in town or out of combat without a gold sink or something to deter rampant skill switching then every barb will be the same as every other barb minus runes / gear... Not Gunna work out. You will be locked to 6 skills and you won't be switching them before a boss without some kind of penalty to your resources...I'm sure of it. Hell they removed TP to stop boss cheesing but loading up all ur defensive CDs u weren't using right before the boss and using them on him? That's lame AND cheesy, and you ppl advocating it are cheeseballs who want to put little to no thought into diablo gameplay.
You would rather have a toolbox with all the possible tools than have to select a set of tools and make due with what you've chosen? No1 will care that uve come up with an awesome "build" if every other person playing could switch to your build at any time with no consequence... Am I right? I'm going to play this game No matter what but so many more people than the ones complaining on these forums will be disappointed if they take all the customization and meaningful choice from the game.
My 2 cents.

"I went outside today, the graphics were alrite ... but the gameplay sucked."
Personally I see nothing wrong with allowing skill swapping whenever/wherever. What I believe will be even more important than that, and will alleviate the issue completely (or nearly), would be to simply not allow -rune- swapping outside of town. The impact of that would be that you cannot remove a skill with a rune in it, because you cannot remove the rune, therefor if you want your twitch-action skill swapping on the fly, you need to leave your skills unruned, which is the only way that unruned skills will finally be viable (something Blizzard tried to argue was the case some time ago), because it will allow you to swap in whatever extra skill you need for the right situation, even if it isn't at 100% effectiveness. This allows you to freely test your skills at low levels, when there aren't runes at no penalty or extreme time cost running in/out of town, but once the game really starts picking up, you no longer have that luxury anymore, as you will likely be using runes in most if not all of your skills.

Why don't you spend your time playing a game that doesn't suck then?
Why don't you play games from a company who doesn't purposefully ruin their games?
Why don't you play games from good companies in general?
Why don't you play games from companies that aren't scared of competition?
Why don't you play games that were developed by people who care about things that really matter?
Why don't you play games that aren't completely watered down for idiots like the people waiting for Diablo 3?
Why don't you play games with good systems in them?
In short... there are a lot of things you could be doing as a gamer other than sitting on this message board and constantly talking about a game you think is going to 'suck'. Since you know Diablo 3 is going to suck so badly, I assume there are a TON of them out there.
I think your presence alone shows that you will buy the game, that you are excited about it and that you are passionate about it. I think your posts show that you are hellbent on being obnoxious and annoying people.
If you hate the game as much as you say... then you spending as much time as you do on here is kind of sad.

This is a post I made to someine whom made a simular reply in the losing interest thread:
"Actually for a bunch of people, I'm sure that's still up in the air(as in they are still deciding, don't over think my statement, I'm very literal when making such posts), so the old fans of the series just check up on sites like this, to know what they would be possibly buying, instead of buying a game in the dark, just to find out it sucks.
There are too many crappy games being made these days(in the industry in general), to go on blind faith, especially for a company that hasn't made enough games to have a rep to beginwith(also they are far apart which makes it even more worrysome, not to mention each game is a different genre).
Game design is more of a science then a art, you don't need to play a game, to know that certian system will effect gameplay in a negative way, all you need to know is how certian systems work/were implimented. Also you only need to see or hear certain things, to know if stuff sucks or are good, such as map design/music(aka the outside maps in act 1 suck, while the dungeon maps are very good "for example". Granted they say the outside maps are better in the other acts, but that doesn't change the fact that "atleast" the outside maps in act 1 are crappy)."
That should answer your underlining question, as for the others, I do play good games, from good comanies(almost exclusively, but I still like to look into a game, before going out, and buying it. There's only 1 company that Iis costistant enough, to where if given no choice, I could go on blind faith, and Blizzard Isn't it, they don't even come close to warranting such a high lv of respect, 3 titles released in a span of 10 years, is so not enough to even build a rep, atleast not a good rep anyway), that not only constantly make highend quality games, but don't pull any of the Blizzard PR or over the top greedy marketing BS tactics either.
D1 was good, D2 was borderline godly(if there was no duping issue, which most games out there don't have, and if the stat system was better balanced, D2 would've easily been one of the best games ever made period, and hands down the best in the genre even upto to this dat), so there was no reason to think D3 wouldn't atleast be as good as D2. However knowing how the industry works(development team members leaving, and corporate BS, exc), combined with how much time has passed since D2, Blizzard's past creations hold very little evidence that what they make today, will have the same or higher lv of quality(D2 came out like 12 years or so ago for crying out loud).
But you are still dancing around the primary question of "If you KNOW that this game is going to suck so bad, why waste so much of your time here?". You're not just checking in from time to time. You are frequenting the site and posting often.
Also, you seem convinced the game is going to suck. So what are you coming here to check on exactly? The systems they have put in place aren't changing and if they are, they aren't going to change so drastically as to change your opinion.
Phrayed, replying to a troll invariably makes YOU a troll as well. Shut up and let the thread get back on topic. I don't even know who you're fighting with, nor would I bother addressing this post to them, because clearly they aren't listening to sense anyways.
So, who has any opinions on the idea of limiting skill swapping to runes (cannot remove runes outside of town, ergo cannot change runed skills outside of town; but adding runes or changing unruned skills remains possible anywhere)?

I still don't see why it's a big deal to be able to toggle them anywhere. I guess at some point someone might be able to majorly exploit it.
For the pure reason of just preventing anything crazy from happening, I'd probably just make it so it must be changed in town. But that also goes away from the 'core game strategy' of continuous action as opposed to always going back and forth from town.
Idea. You should have to "channel" the skill swap, for say, 10-20 seconds. That will act as an "in combat" mechanism, because if you get interrupted, your skill swap will cancel. It will also prevent exploiting the system because of how long it takes to channel the swap. It's just long/annoying enough to prevent spamming swaps (it will actually make you consider your choices, rather than just swapping mindlessly), but it will keep you in the action.

My 2 cents.
So, who has any opinions on the idea of limiting skill swapping to runes (cannot remove runes outside of town, ergo cannot change runed skills outside of town; but adding runes or changing unruned skills remains possible anywhere)?
Replying to a troll replying to troll would in turn make you a troll as well, wouldn't it?
Just saying... this was kind of a fail on your part.

I don't know if you have to make it 10-20 seconds... but I think this is a very good idea.
