First off I'd like to say that I am fully aware of the fact that some of the existing Diablo 3 classes already possess some form or another of the old D2 classes' skills. Please don't jump the gun and start freaking out in the comments because 'the WD already summons undead'. I am perfectly aware of that, thank you, so please don't start a flame war here. Just read on to see the point of this thread.
The actual point of this poll is only to represent the archetypes, and a lot of people enjoyed some of the D2 classes and they still feel that the WD doesn't do the necromancer justice, or that the monk can't quite replace the paladin. I only used the old class names, because they are good representations of those archetypes. If Blizzard reworks them for Diablo 3 they can rename them, and probably will, so that isn't really the point of this thread.
The point is, which of these archetypal play styles did you enjoy most? And which ones would you like to see returned in a Diablo 3 expansion?
Further more, how would you like them to expand on the old way these classes work, but in a newer Diablo 3 way.
1. Amazon/range and melee equal fighter - This would be the sort of specialist who will be able to switch between melee and range flawlessly. Maybe have a few snares, but mostly they can switch out however they're needed. Since there are no throwing weapons in D3 yet I thought this would be a great class to introduce them. Javelins, throwing axes and hammers, which they can use melee and range all in one go. I'm not so sure if the elemental skills should return, but stuff like fend, jab, dodge, and the more odd stuff like Inner sight would even work.
2. Assassin/stealth based trickery class - This class is the trickiest since the Monk and Demon Hunter already cover her role quite well, but I still think there is some potential left. Skills like cloak of shadows, venom and fade. The reason I really chose assassin is because of skills like psychic hammer, mind blast, and shadow warrior. How about they focus on these sorts of skills and go for a psychic type of warrior that use trickery and subtlety to fight, which would make for an interesting class.
3. Druid - nature based caster - Since D3 already lacks a solid summoner class, maybe this guy can go a step further than how he functioned in D2. If they do bring back a nature class, I'd prefer them to go more nature tuned and less nature elementalist. I quite liked the idea of the vines in D2, but they were somewhat lacking so maybe some skills with strong grasping vines, thorn armor, vine barriers, summon a stationary ent, deadly fog, quicksand, fissures, poisonous barbs. If they do go shapeshifer, I would like to see something different, maybe totem spirits that give different bonuses. Or even if they do make a shapeshifting class, they can go wild, like say a class that turns into demons, maybe the idea they had for the Demon Hunter at a stage.
4. Paladin/sword and shield specialist - For me this is a hands down must. There is no class in D3 that specializes in shields. WD and Wizard uses offhand items, Monk is fist weapons and staff focused, DH is ranged all the way, while Barb is the only class I can see with a shield, but why would you when you can go two handed or use two weapons. I like the old knight archetype, it just feels right. Paladin was all auras (he had 2 trees full of them) and he had about 2 skills focused on shields. With Diablo 3 they can go all out. How about he throws his shield, which bounces Captain America style, or he ignites his shield so foes take lightning/fire/cold damage when they hit him, or reflects range attacks at attackers, or he gets a shield attack that slices enemies for bleed damage. He can even get a spiked shield to increase shield skill damage. He can still get normal weapon skills. Since he focuses on one handed weapons he can maybe use skills that work differently per weapon. Like a skill that stuns with a blunt weapon, but bleeds with a sharp weapon. Or a slice that improves speed with a sword, but increases crit with an axe.
5. Necromancer/ death based caster - I know people are dying to see this guy return. In D3 they can take him to the next level. Corpse Explosion, bone spear, bone spirit, they can go crazy with bone type of spells, especially so to distinguish him from the WD. What could really set him aside is curses. Why not make curses that actually do damage. Maybe he can have target focused curses that weakens one target and then he can bounce spells of them, like a bone dagger. Or he can curse multiple targets and then cast spells that specifically do extra or specialized damage to them.
Give me your thoughts on how you'd like to see old favorites re-imagined in Diablo 3. Take note, I didn't add resources for them, because I didn't think it would be important at this stage. However, if you think you have interesting and new ideas for resource systems to suit the old characters then give your thoughts and ideas.
P.S. I didn't add Barbarian for obvious reasons, but added in the Sorcerer for those who want a pure elementalist caster.
Wow tl;dr, if anything i d want the necro but they have the WD and i saw the gargantuan so everything in d3 is now cool with me. and how can u say d3 lacks a summoner with the WD

Went outside today, the graphics were ok. But the gameplay sucked

Sorry about that, I saw at the end that it was quite long.
Well, a lot of people have mentioned this and unlike the necro, the WD actually has to be active in combat to survive. A pure summoning necro build in D2 could sit back and enjoy the ride. This was actually in the official forums, which Blizzard has stated was intentional. They want you to assist the dogs and the gargantuan, because sitting back was no fun. Some people enjoy this style of play, which is why I added it. Besides, most spells are short duration and some have long cooldowns, so you have few actual summoning spells.
There would be too much overlap if other classes returned. I'm happy to see the same archetypes in a new kit. As disappointed as I was at the lack of a Necro, I think having D2 classes would make D3 get old prematurely.
I think as is, D3 is pretty versatile from what I can see, but I do agree that it's lacking a sword/shield class much like the Paladin (which happens to be my fav class). There's no shield specialist. I think the reasoning Blizz did was that shields were (to them) OP because they had a (75%) chance to block all physical damage, which meant it was better than using two-handed weapons, so they nerfed shields, but you can argue they nerfed it too much.
Also, you mentioned that DH's are ranged all the way, but they can still do 1h crossbow + shield combo; don't think a lot will do that, since they'll be out of harms way for the most part, but still got that option.
If the Paly is to return in the expansion (which would be cool), his role needs to be heavily modified to not overlap with the Monk, and auras need to work differently than mantras somehow (not to mention they gave charge to Barb and Monk). They would also have to give him more/better crowd control abilities.
D3 severly lacks a Paladin type class, so that's a must.
Also while I'm not one to play such classes, this game could probally use a amazon type class, especially with how D3 plays, and the blood orb system, so it would be nice to beable to switch from melee to range on the fly, yet still be effective.
I think with their current "6 skills" methodology a summoner class would be very difficult. If you have more than 2-3 summons, you basically don't have anything else you can do. If you played like a Necromancer with 4 summons, or a Druid with 3, what else can you be doing other than following behind your army watching it do stuff?
Personally, I don't find that thought very appealing, it doesn't feel like you're playing an Action RPG at that point, it feels like you're following someone else who's playing one.
I think a cool nature/transformation type of char would be sweet to play in an expansion. Heck i just want any type of character that can transform into something, as long as they dont make it too similar to the druids of WoW.
Also, i know many people love the paladin, but i was wondering as to why so many ppl wish to see the return of the paladin. Is it because he was one of the strongest and OP classes in D2(Hammerdin/Smiter)? Or is it the shield specialist defensive/offensive aspect of the paladin? Or...the lore behind him being a holy warrior and what not? just curious as to why ive seen so many ppl ask to bring him back. thx

Ha. Bagstone.
And also added an elemental caster for those who want to see some such class make a return.

Yeah, but the Wizard is more arcane while the Sorc was elemental specialization (ice, lightning, fire)
Well basically i want the Druid back. Shapeshifting in D3 could be awesome.
