This question is for the Beta folks, and its born out of my fear that I won't have enough inventory space available if I only buy one copy of the game.
In D2 I had to keep 6-7 accounts for playing and for muling SC and HC crap. The way Blizzard choose to implement accounts in D3 its sounding like I cant just create another account for more storage (one that of course wouldnt be allowed to sign in concurrently with any others using the same cdkey or purchase) So, I hear the shared storage is large, but I dont really know how big relative to the as yet undefined pool of uniques/legendaries/sets etc..
D3 doesn't seem to have the need to stockpile a ton of gems (perf and chipped), runes, jewels etc, which should cut down on space drastically... D2 did however have over 350 unique items and 32 different sets. Assuming that some of these will have unique mods on them (or at least unique for their magnitude/slot/reqs) that would still be a ton of crap to store if you want to keep what you found for various build experiments.
I doubt blizzard would come in under the bar of D2's pool of items, given that the items are basically the core of the diablo games, so what do the beta people think: Not counting rares, runes, gems etc... If we get a unique/set item pool comparable to the size of D2s will we be able to fit it in our shared vaults, or will we be looking at the need to buy another account if we want to keep what we find (in both HC and SC)?
I think that if the community demands more space, they'll consider adding it. I see your concern, I like playing with multiple classes and saving different "sets" of gear for different levels for my other characters, so I'm screwed too
But right now, with the whole crafting system requiring a ton of materials (a lot of rare and legendaries required for 1 good crafted item, that still has some random stuff in it), they're probably counting on people breaking them a TON of stuff (most of it? to reach the higher difficulties faster and more well-equipped.
I've only been here like 2 weeks but we've had this discussion before. I think its probably going to be a problem if you can't make another account. Sets come to mind as major space eaters - even at 1 or 2 slots per item trying to collect more than a couple of sets is going to consume huge amounts of space. Playing long term and upgrading gems is going to consume many slots - assume you have a level 12 gem - before you can upgrade it to a 13 at some point you will have every level below that as well in storage (down to level 5) - theres 7 slots right there x 6 gem types is 40 to 50 slots just in gem storage.
My solution for sets is to create at least one of every class right off the bat and any set item for that class is immediately stored in their inventory (from the shared) until I get around to playing that class. The space will only become a problem once you have high level characters of 3 or 4 classes and you're using their inventory for actual game play, instead of being part of your item bank.
Yes! I think the thing to keep in mind is that a lot of great items in D2 took up 6 (!) spaces in your inventory. We've also already seen that salvaged pieces can stack, and I wouldn't be surprised if gems of a similar type and quality also stacked.

In fact, I hope they made it so, that you cant create more than 1 account at all.
Much fairer,, and protects pack-rats like myself from themselves and their never ending hoarding habbits.
(I had 14 accs in D2)
