I am probably sure this has been covered at some stage in the long history of this site...
All this beta news and streaming has gotten me really questioning which character I am going to play first when D3 hits the shelves! I would massively appreciate if someone could create (or direct me to) a presentation comparing character classes from the 3 diablo games and the common themes within characters:
Essentially what I was after was along the lines of:
"If you were interested in the wizard in D1 and the necromancer in D2, the summoner style Witch Doctor class will probably fit your character preferences better than a tanking class like the Barbarian."
I doubt you'll find appropriate character comparisons, since many of them play completely different to their stereotype counter-parts in Diablo 2.
That is because most skills are completely new to the franchise, and their whole formulae too (many skills having a % of weapon damage). The few "ported" skills either were changed a lot (like Multishot) or cannot be compared because of how the class plays now (like the Barbarian, that cannot infinitely spam Whirlwind with enough mana regen, and his Leap Attack has a cooldown). Add to that factor the new resource system, and you've got a game with very few similarities (gameplay-wise) to D2, imho.
A very important aspect to note too is that even those who have played the game (through the beta) still don't know how the classes will feel for the majority of the time.
Yes, we've had access to almost 1/3rd of the skills, but we've had extremely limited access to Passives (which should change gameplay considerably) and zero access to runes (which should also change gameplay considerably).
In the end, reading all the active and passive skills on the official D3 website can help you decide which class you want to play.

Maybe I will just roll a dice...
