First, I apologize if this has been covered before. I didn't find anything, so...
What mode are you all going to play first, and why? Not just Softcore vs Hardcore (although that is a legitimate topic), but also single player vs multiplayer random vs multi with friends.
My issue is that I want to play through D3, at least once, for the story. Which means taking things slowly, and exploring everything. That lends itself to single player. That said, I'm not a huge fan of lots of grinding to beat a boss just cause I'm playing by my lonesome. However, I'm not sure Blizz makes you choose between single vs multi, they might just have you choose private vs public games.
Anyway, here's what I think I'm gonna do first:
Softcore, mostly single player (if I have to choose between single and multi, I'll probably choose multi, but just play in private rooms). I'm going to do this so, as I said before, I can stop and smell the roses. It's not that I have anything against multi, in fact I usually prefer it, but my experience with D2 was that multi is always rushing through everything at full speed. And softcore so I don't have to worry about an accidental death because I took a wrong turn, and because I probably won't have teammates to cover me in bad situations.
After that first play through (probably just up to Nightmare), I'll probably switch over to all multi, and go hardcore.
Since I'll be taking a week off for the release, it will depend on if any of my friends take time off on the day of launch. If they will be playing @ 12:01 AM then we'll play together. Otherwise I'll do single player. I have more fun with friends as far as action and gameplay, but I just click through things and can't really listen to music while playing with friends (because we're always talking) so if I want to be immersed in the music and click on all the new lore buttons I need to be solo.
I know my friends are just going to run around more or less to their POI. Therefore, my first playthrough is gonna be softcore single player. I'm gonna explore every nook and cranny of the map and listen to every conversation possible. I just want to thoroughly experience D3 and all it's randomness/awesomeness by myself first. I will probably play with my friends and other random people once I've completed Normal or maybe Nightmare. Really just need to experience the game on my own pace.
Edit: So basically what you said. Didn't read your whole post before posting, just the first paragraph.
Hopefully (assuming I find 3 other people that I can rely on to play with consistently), I will get the game, and roll my Wizard softcore. Together with 3 other people, I will rush through to end-game as fast as possible on my Wizard. There, I will stay for a while and do loot runs until I either find them to be unnecessary or unsuccessful. At which point I will reroll a new toon and repeat.

Playing a Wizard. Looking for Demon Hunters to play with.
I'll play a softcore character of each class to the end of act 1, then through each act until normal is completed. (this will all be single player games.) then i should have a very good feel for how each class plays. then i'll play each class through each difficulty until each class is level 60. (this will be multi player/single player.) once this is completed then i'll pick my favorite class for inferno & farm for items to sell on the rmah. who doesn't want to get paid to play your favorite game?
I usually add 30-50% more hours than the average play time when ever I play a game the first time. So if diablo 3's normal difficulty is 20 hours long (only example) then I'll finish it ~30 hours.
30 hours includes:
switching classes
farm lowbie boss just for fun
leveling artisans
experimenting on lowbie builds
looking at UI
reading lores
doing lowbie achievement
checking stats
resetting game for random events
talking to all NPC and clicking them till they say something funny
and many many many more!
Funny thing is even with all these, I'll still miss something

I love all loot fest kind of game! I will be playing all of them for the next few years. Loot fest games I'm looking forward to: LotR: War in the North,Torchlight 2,Borderlands 2 and of course Diablo 3.
Read everything, listen to everything, fine tune my armor dyes, banners and such to my perfect liking. Wizard on Softcore all the way to Inferno Endgame, I'd do hardcore but not for a first character. Lots of energy drinks, low volume music so I can still hear the talking (Or maybe just the ingame music, haven't decided yet). Clear every dungeon, explore every crevice, do every and all quests, sidequests, encounters, events, if I die I'll just try and try again until I get it done. Looking forward to this game.
I'll be playing with specific friends as a wizard in multi player mode. We will be playing at a semi casual pace listening to all the lore and watching the cut scenes. I doubt we will miss many side quests, but we could miss a few.
If all of my specific friends aren't online I will playing a barb in even slower mode making sure I hit everything I am able to. Which character beats normal and/or hits 60 the fastest depends entirely on how often my friends are online.
Allthough, all my friends are hardcore players so I might go hardcore from the beginning if they want to.
Can you do hardcore from the beginning or will we have to finish the game on normal first? If ypu can start on hardcore I'll go hardcore but if you have to play through on softcore first, I'll most likely just keep playing on in softcore.
I plan on going Solo through normal at least once. And probably 2-4 times before going Multiplayer with friends.
Now, I may not follow that to a T, if I have buddies on and they want to play, I'll play. But I'm not going to go out of my way to play with friends for at least a week. I want to get through normal on a WD, Wizard and probably a Barb and Monk to explore / expirience the game with out having to talk to anyone, and with out skipping stuff to "keep pace". Once I start to go into Nightmare, I'll join up with friends and start the grind! Softcore mode <
Here's how I see it:
Imagine you have been anticipating a trip to your favorite restaurant. On that magical day you order a great starter, followed by your favorite meal with a preferred drink, and then top it of with the best desert you can think of. In this situation you'd want to sit comfortably and take your sweet time, favoring every morsel of the experience for as long as possible.
Like my example, my first playthrough will be solo, so I don't need to cater to my friend's whimsical need to rush through everything. Then I will play the game, doing everything, exploring every corner of the map, so I can savor every last sweet bit of the Diablo 3 experience.
Personally I would prefer to enjoy a meal like that in the company of like minded good friends to alone, so my first playthrough will be with friends that I know have the same playstyle and wants the same as me out of their first playthrough.
Me too, but none of my friends are into fine restaurant dining, to keep this analogy going.
Basically, I don't have any good friends that are PC gamers anymore, and so it's a choice of savoring it solo, or being forced to get it to go in a doggie bag and eating it in the car so we can make the sporting event/movie/concert.

How about everyone else?
