Items:
- Immortality relic
- Thunderfury (Lightning proc.)
- Freeze of Deflection (Freeze on block)
- The Ess of Johan (Pull & slow 60%)
- Wyrdward (Chance to stun on lightning dmg)
- Oculus Ring (Dmg buff after killing mob(s); swap for Unity if need be)
Skills:
Taunt, Intimidate, Charge, Inspire/Guardian
I have now added a build for the Enchantress as well. Her numerous CC, paired with some awesome items, makes her incredibly useful in group, and single target, HARD CC.
Items:
- Eun-Jang-Do (with lightning dmg)
- Dovu Energy Trap (I didn't mention the Overwhelming Desire ammy because the dmg buff does NOT work on RGs)
Depends on what class and set/LoN set-up you play with.
For WD gargs, Ess of Johan can be a problem as the grouping of mobs could go "totally wrong".
Thunderfury is so-so, I prefer Eun-Jang-do (where you roll the damage type to lightning) to proc Wyrdward, and I even combine that with a Dovu Energy trap (for longer stuns, not sure how much it helps though).
RG's usually get "very active" in their last life segment, Eun-Jang-Do can almost completely freeze them at that point so the last part of the RG fight is easier then.
I use the same Templar setup as OP for melee toons.
Playing a ranged character pretty much rules out using the Templar, but the Scoundrel and Enchantress are both good.
I'm using Scoundrel with Skeleton Key (invulnerability follower token), Windforce (50% chance to knockback on hit) with lightning damage rolled, Oculus, Wyrdward, and Overwhelming Desire charm ammy. Skills are slow, blind, stun, and extra crit chance. The triple shot (multishot skill) is also good but I go for the 100% stun chance to a group of monsters. Multishot skill is probably better in terms of keeping fast/flying elites knocked back. I've used that setup for a few seasons now and like it a lot.
Overwhelming Desire just adds another chance to have the monsters busy doing things other than attacking you... and the charmed monsters take 35% more damage. I still haven't found what I would say is a BIS follower amulet.
(I tend to use a ruby in the follower wep just to add more damage. Use an ammy with decent crit hit dmg (follower limited to 150% CHD and they already have 50%) and stack (Edit: ATTACK SPEED) crit chance/cdr/follower main stat on everything else.)
Thanks for the feedback Huckle! I especially like the lightning-Windforce Scoundrel build. Sounds like it could work very well instead of the Templar, and it gives you the extra crit chance on top of it.
However, I am finding though that the Templar is working great with my Demon Hunter as it keeps mobs clumped together and lets me vault away and start DPSing with all my "at X range" bonuses. I will need to experiment further with the followers and see what works best :D!
No use trying to add any damage to your follower first of all their output is a fraction of yours and then add the fact you are boosted by set items which add 100's if not 1000's of percent of extra damage to you only so rather than wasting a roll on crit or socket if the weapon has CDR already for example then I will try and roll for AS or vice versa as they are the only real ways to add any kind of function to the follower.
I feel, if needed, rolling IAS would be the most beneficial for a follower (in terms of DMG stats) because the followers are equipped to proc stuff. So, more attacks = more procs.

With bane of stricken, isnt the last part the shortest part of the fight already anyway ? IIRC stricken doesnt have a cap ?
Id prefer TF for lowered AS of RG during the first half of the fight where you are basicly just charging up your stricken gem
My other favorite is the blinding sands sword in the enchantress' hands (as she is the only one that can carry a 2 hander). With enough CDR and AS she blinds the RG for half the fight and it spends a lot of time spinning around trying to find me, I don't know how many times the RG has about to lay the big smackdown only to end up blinded at the last moment.
Yup, I remember trying that one before! Overall, followers make handling packs and bosses much easier when they are CCed in some way for most of the fight

Garg WD (actually almost any WD set-up) has the biggest issue of losing 10 stacks of Soul Harvest on single target - also, even with 1M HP WD's usually are very squishy, so it is enough for an RG to "look at you" in his "rage phase" and you at least proc, if not getting killed immediately.
So, any "hard CC" you can do on the RG in that last phase will help a WD player a lot.

I play WD and my follower is the Enchantress because of the aura for range attack protection. But my playstile is to stand directly in the crowd and let the gargs do the job. I usally dont have any survivability problems.

Yes, I also stand in the crowd during the rift, however, at RG's this becomes different, and that is also what I pointed out in the post above.

yes RG's are very hard to fight but its okay with some dodging skills. I made my 86 Rift with the enchantress
It sounds like more and more the Eun-Jang-Do (lightning dmg) + wyrdward can be a great alternative for many classes when it comes down to RGs.
I guess it's fair to say that, depending on your class, with packs, a Templar might be the best choice overall, but on single target (i.e. RGs) a follower with Eun-Jang-Do + Wwyrdward may excel more?
Yeah I agree with what you are saying, but I'll use a gift on a follower wep and put a gem in it (why wouldn't you?) to max out their damage. Getting to 150 CHD (50 baseline+100 added) on a follower is usually just a matter of gearing an amulet that has some CHD on it- it shouldn't mean you can't have all the other stats you want.
So my point (at the end, in parenthesis) was a gentle reminder about what was missing from the video (e.g. what to roll on the items, what gem to use in that empty weapon socket, etc.). Not mentioning Attack Speed was an oversight wrapped up in an afterthought...inside Edward Nygma..

Yes, duly noted. I should have gone over making sure you look for IAS especially as a stat on the gear you give the follower.
Thanks for all your help and feedback Huckle !

This. I can't live without Eun-Jang-Do, it makes a HUGE difference in rift guardians, which as Mad Tom said, get very active in the last 20%. That stun is amazing. I also love the Freeze of Deflection, for the same reason, and Ess of Johan as well - it works great if you don't use a pull-spell in your build.
Been doing this for the past 2 seasons. Can also use the eun-jang-do weapon to freeze grift boss on 20% life remaining. Don't know where you've been hiding but this has been known for a while.
Haven't been hiding anywhere I made the video since people sometimes overlook useful things like gearing out your follower.
This follower build will not only make your Templar a CC king, but he can also boost your DPS! Use this build to make greater rifts easier.
