It seems that the artists at Blizzard made a funny idiotic & lame way of holding a shield.
In the newly leaked Diablo III Beta photos, you can see the arm of both the Mage & the Barbarian going right through both the shield's arm brace & handle bar. First of all, the arm cannot go through the handle bar.
In these photos, you can clearly see the distal radius & ulna, plus the whole hand is protruding way out of proportion:
However small a shield or a buckler may be, a warrior's arm can't go through both the arm brace & handle bar. For one thing, they wont have any control on the shield which will twist around their arm.
Shouldn't a shield be held this way? Only the arm goes thru the arm brace for support while the hand is free to hold the handle bar tight for control:
Aw c'mon Blizzard, please fix this before you release the game so that the characters won't look stupid holding a shield the wrong way.
Most shields where either held like you got there (brace and handle) or just a handle (older ones).
That said, given the size of the shield, it's more like an oversized wrist guard (maybe that's what that is, allowing the player to still use that hand for something) instead of an undersized shield.
That's all probably wishful thinking though.
It depends on the size of the shield in honesty. If its too big it would become unwieldy without using the hand... however if its small enough it would be used on a bracelet like handle that would make it work. I can't remember the Kung Fu Movie off the top of my head... but the character used several bracelet rings to act as an armlet and would deflect swords using it. Its not unrealistic at that size...
Given that the size of a shield is small, still, you'll need to grab hold of it with your hand for it to be sturdy & be able to withstand the blows from the enemies.
This is a shield used for war against Diablo & his denizens, not a Yu-Gi-Oh wrist card holder.
Besides, holding a shield on your left hand means you cannot dual-wield a weapon & you cannot arm your off-hand with anything else.
From the image itself, you cannot say that it's an oversize wrist guard since it is placed on the arm. Imagine yourself being run down by a horde of Diablo'a denizens & you will just do some light blocking??? Really? 2, 3 monsters with brute force attacking you at the same time & you'll only do some light blocking...
It would have looked better & more realistic if they just had the characters holding the shield with their left hand rather than the weird way they had it right now.
Two of my friends are members of a tradition-keeper group (fencing in armor 'n stuff), and I remember them telling me about, that in the early medieval times, eastern European and Asian nomads did use these kind of bucklers, in order to have a free hand, but then they used a dagger or something relatively light in their off hand, and only blocked with these shields if they really needed to. Of course regular shield were more popular and wide-spread, but thats' another thing.

Yes, probably does need a hand, given the size, but when does Diablo do realistic sizes of weapons/armor?
And you CAN say it's on oversized wrist, it IS on part of the wrist. I think that is supported by the cut out that just happens to fit the guys fist. He can use this for *some* blocking, but still have almost full use of the hand.
A true buckler function the same as an oversized arm guard and would fit in the same manner as shown here. I have no problem with this design.
Well, at least according to Wikipedia that's not true. Bucklers were tiny shields that where just by the hand, and used to deflect light, quick swords like the rapier.

I imagine that the attachment point for the shield to the arm was chosen based on what looks best from a gameplay perspective, which is where most of the viewing of the character is going to happen. Except for the early levels, you are probably going to have a huge ass shield that obscures most of one side of the character, so you're not going to see the arm anyway.
The attachment point was also likely chosen for ease of modeling and animation.
... it is very possible to be strapped on the wrist...why not???
That's just another conceptualized art from another game. This is Diablo III we're talking about, whose Beta is just about to start this September, so Blizzard has plenty of time to fix this minor alteration issue before the game is release.

That may be the case, yet I'm hoping they could remodel the attachment point for this particular small shield or any buckler for that matter that just looks so lame.
Like Jay Wilson always quotes "Diablo III is an awesome game." Yes this might just be a level 1 or 2 small shield & not some epic huge ass piece of awesome for blocking, but that doesn't mean it had to look lame when worn in an awesome game.
I think we should also critique the way characters wear helmets and how they swing swords if it doesn't match some realistic style then its a bunch of *(^$^*()%^&^%$$% oh wait... its a game.
Honestly do you expect a level 1-2 shield to be some epic huge ass piece of awesome for blocking...

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.
Im cool with these small shields looking like this, as long as larger shields are held the traditional way/midevil way :-)
A Tower Sheild will not resist enemy attack, and will most certainly flip over, if you didnt have a firm grasp on the inside, and likely even if you didnt dig it into the ground a wee bit.
I'm assuming when the guys are moving, it looks perfectly natural and you'll be able to tell it's an attached buckler. It's not a shield and therefore you don't need control of it like a shield.
On a reality note of course, the only reason you would have a shield like that is if you wanted to be able to use that hand for something, I somehow doubt you'll be able to wield two weapons and have a small shield equipped. Still, the weapon and shield have to start small and weak looking or where's the contrast?
Don't we have actual gameplay related things to talk about?

Obviously it must be strapped on SUPER TIGHT. I for one will be looking for a bigger shield straight off or another weapon.
Bucklers will soon go to SCRAPS.
Look at it this way... it is a deflector shield..... a port side deflector, a large bangle, a small table.... from game cam it will look just fine.
