I had a funny taught while playing SC2 today, how much nostalgia should we expect ind Diablo III? We all know Blizzard likes to poke fun at their other franchises. From staff members, Warcraft, Starcraft, and even non lore related Diablo references. How many old T.V references will there be, I know WoW was filled with those.
Something tells me that Diablo III will actually reference Diablo more than its direct sequel, at least that is how they made it sound at their discussion panels. I think it is not so much preference, as it is possibilities. Diablo III will be much better at storytelling. In fact, we did see footage of the Lazarus and King Leorc story arc.
... If I hear the Barbarian say "Not enough Rage!", I am going to bust a lung with laughter.
Something tells me that Diablo III will actually reference Diablo more than its direct sequel,
Well im not so sure about that, someone from the dev team in a panel said that the male barbarian is THE barb from D2, and i believe we will see a lot of references from d2 about kurast, mount arreat, Tyrael will be in there too for sure. I think only the act 1 will be centered around diablo 1 and the rest will explain about why they did what they did in D2 (Izual clearly say that it was planed all along with the soulstones and that it was too late to stop the real plan).
In fact, i am pretty sure we will see mephisto make a comeback just like his brother Diablo. The soulstones were nothing more than prisons after all. The only one not coming back is Baal because his soulstone was damaged in the event of his capture and had to be imprisoned in tal rasha, he did not need his soulstone to take fully possession of him (only to get all of his true powers back).
Poking fun at stuff? I expect a healthy dose of it.
Nostalgia, honest and clean and loving nostalgia... I really hope there is a lot. Loved Lazarus and Leoric so much from the original, and I am all for more of that. I loved my D2, but I grew up on Diablo/Hellfire and if I get more of that I'll be happy. I know the Cathedral is intact, and I would be tickled pink if they allowed it to be a dungeon, or at least explored. I can still hear The Butcher in my nightmares.
D3 is supposed to wrap up the arc the last two set and be even bigger in terms of area to explore. I can still hold hope they at least give Diablo the love it really deserves.

The Diablo III Barbarian being the same as the Diablo II Barbarian was something called off later in development. Unless they have changed their minds yet again, it is going to be a totally fresh character due to lore complications.
My point was not to say Diablo III will not heavily reference Diablo II. My point is Diablo III will cover the events of original much better than the original did because they have exponentially more venues for storytelling. The vagueness of the original Diablo, due to its age, leaves much more to explain. The recent retcon of the Warrior, among other lore changes and things mentioned at the discussion panel, are sure signs of more to come.
Well the devs talk about alot of the stuff they hate about Diablo 2 maybe they will poke fun at that.
Yeah, kinda strange they put people who hated almost every aspect of Diablo 2 on the Diablo 3 team.
No more rushing, no more boss runs, no more fighting over loot drops, no more muling, no more hostile, no more rerolling characters, no more skill points, no more 8 person rooms where three can be screwing around in one act with the other five someplace else, etc.
Sure is a lot they can make fun of.
Im not sure if i'm reading what your implying with your post correctly, but I'm actually glad the things you mentioned are gone.
All except for the "no more rerolling" i'll miss that, but i feel like almost all the other decisions they made were pretty well justified. I hated fighting over loot, i felt like if the acts were more interesting i wouldn't want to skip them, boss runs got redundant, and 8 people was chaotic as hell.
Most of the time in an 8 player game i was just running to catch up with the front of the group, which if i stopped for a second to take anything at all in, identify stuff, etc. i'd be left in the dust every single time in an 8 player game. But yeah, they changed quite a bit, i'll have to play it to truly decide, but it seems like they polished out the annoying crap out of the game (minus the re-rolling, i liked that) so i've still got high hopes for D3.
D3 will be hugely nostalgic rooted in playing Diablo shareware after begging my dad to get windows 95 for it lol. Was so excited when I finally got to play it, I was so little..
My memories of Diablo 2 were different, I was more just excited to play with friends adventuring through SP / IP Connect before diving into the trading world of d2 battle.net. That's where it really took over and I poured countless hours into the game. In this respect, I'd describe the launch of D3 as less nostalgic but more of a relapse rofl
In the final fight in Act 4, the final boss is named LOLArthas, and you have to avoid standing in his defile. .... .....
EDIT: In all seriousness though, id expect to come across quite a bit of old-school diablo throwbacks. Heck, we already know Cain is back, and in full force dropping his catchphrase at every opportunity :-)
Im not sure if i'm reading what your implying with your post correctly, but I'm actually glad the things you mentioned are gone.
The actual gameplay factors changed drastically; the only things that were kept were the aesthetic design, lore, isometric view, & click to move.
They removed everything that separated new players from veterans, took out all requirements of forethought, and removed any need for hospitable social relations with fellow players (no hostile feature, no more bartering, no more giving away free loot - even the AH is anonymous so who cares who is selling/buying).
Having to move items while risking them, having to carefully select what stats/skills to choose, having to find someone and haggle to do a trade, having to be careful when new players join a game, having to quickly click items when a boss dies - all of these things required training, planning, skill, experience, and when successful, meant more than if they were a given.
I think they gave us too much of what we wanted and turned the game into Diablo II for dummies.
So what is left for nostalgia? Music hopefully, and the constant clicking.
What I hope, what I think might be the saving grace of this game, is if the monsters are genuinely tough, and that their removal of all these side obstacles was required to keep people interested in a game so challenging.
You remind me of the people that complained about how SC2 got an updated interface from SC1. All these things you complain about(With the exception of a few) are just the game getting updated. End of story. You can pretend you're "Pro" though for spam clicking the ground, or just getting auto pick up if that really makes you feel good about yourself.

Couldn't disagree more. All the stuff you named were all the reasons I eventually stopped enjoying diablo II. First of all generally speaking being hospitable and polite is good practice no matter where you are, whether it is simple to be nice, or because you are trying to get free stuff is irrelevant. Also, it IS still possible to give away or receive free items from people you've befriended in game. If someone joins the game and hostiles me, I quit and join another one, that requires absolutely no skill whatsoever, and is just lame.
Removed the need for forethought? You have to pick the 6 skills you want that fit your play style and grow in power with you, allowing you to constantly modify and adjust your character to both the situation and your preferred play style. I'd say that's a hell of a lot more forethought than googling 'hammerdin' or 'mf sorc'.
After the game had been out for a few years, whenever I'd reinstall to play, I would start a new character, play for 3 days while being botted through Baal runs right to level 85, get free loot since its everywhere and anyone with half a brain can get it since people quit so often all you need to do is join a 'Free items here' game and get a few Shakos (or whatever) and you're set, and then quit the game for another year or two. Not fun.
Move items while risking them ? How is that an enjoyable feature? It's a poorly implemented system that was just annoying and bad. You basically had to wait for a friend to log on so you could make a transfer game and spend 10 minutes logging in and out of alts to get everything done. If you disconnect, or your buddy does, bye bye all your gear. Great feature.
Carefully selecting skills ? Really ? By carefully you mean going to google and typing 'Hammerdin' and then saving all your points until level 24 while being rushed through everything. And if you accidentally put a point in the wrong spot because a misclick, delete the character and make it again. I'm pretty sure that every character I've made in the last 3 or 4 years hasn't actually killed ANYTHING until about level 35 when I'd start attacking stuff during botted baal runs. Like you could actually easily hit 85 without ever once attacking something, that clearly requires absolutely no skill whatsoever.
Quickly clicking items when a boss dies.. so whoever is melee with the best ping gets all the loot. Yep that requires skill and precision. I'd usually get my ranged classes to stop DPSing for the last 10% of the fight while I spam clicked to get gear. Awesome and totally enjoyable feature.
Back on topic..
I'm sure there will be tons of references to both games, from small NPC comments that make me smile to full Lorebook descriptions that will vividly remind me of playing D1 on my first computer in the basement when I was still under like 4 feet tall.
Totally off-topic ..
Hunter ! I watch your SC2 vids all the time, fellow Canadian. =D
TYVM non-intertial-frame =D I was about to type a rant almost exactly like that. I as well am tired of hearing complaints that have no real justification, and the persons only argument can be boiled down to "omg its different from D2"
I can guarantee almost no one actually enjoyed trying to switch items to a new toon, or having gear snaked because the person stopped combat to pixel hump the boss and spam click. Also miss clicking at 85 with your new talents was never fun; Not once did I think to myself when that happened "ahhh... so glad they forced me to make one decision on my spec (ty google) instead of trying out new spells... OH NO AMG I missclicked, well now its time to level again...this feature is so cool.."
Argh. Love the graphics/colors/lighting/skills/armor sets/RMAH/no hostile/non esport arena/different loot per toon/inferno.
Also, more on topic: although he died i'd LOVE to see wirt again, that little bastard =D
I expect a resurrected Butcher, or a monster to be a spiritual successor to him. In D2 we had the smith who kinda chased you down in the same sense and we had Hephasto who again darted at you in a frenzy. With Leoric back from the meteorite I see no reason why the Butcher won't be coming back.

I'd agree with that on the stash / loot / amount of players / stats / skills, but the auction house / arena / hostility features are more than an update, they are a direct charge in another direction.
We are talking fundamental game mechanics - how players interact with each other.
Your views are already widely listed in every thread on every subpoint that I brought up, showing your absolute "I'm okay with it" on every change, but you can't pretend we are playing Diablo 2.20, this is more than an update - it is a change of identity - one day daddy came home and though he looked the same, he is actually Nicolas Cage and not John Travolota.
I don't want to play Diablo 2 2.0.
I'm glad it's different and Blizz has stated time and time again it would be it's own game. I also don't have to agree with you with what's good and what's bad btw.
Get over it.
