I really don't know if there is really room in the world for more MMORPGs than WoW. So many people have tried, and so many MMORPGs have failed. Even WoW has less than half the playerbase it had at its peak.
I certainly wouldn't be the one sticking my neck out in a games company to push out another MMORPG.
Some say they failed, but failed on what? Comparative analysis? WELL OF COURSE, nothing compares to WoW. But when you do cost analysis almost every single one of these MMO's have actually been ultra successful and all of which still have a very strong dedicated playerbase.
That being said, if Diablo does go the MMORPG route (which they will not) I would go the route of free to play with micro-transactions. Nothing in micro transactions that give you a strong competitive advantage, but something more cosmetic and QoL.
I think I have mentioned this to you before, but I think they will look more into a hybrid MMOARPG, the Action part of the genre is ESSENTIAL for Diablo to succeed. Adding dedicated towns for trading, as well as reputations and other MMO elements would be massive for a game like Diablo, but I would not make it a completely open world that we all run around and kill stuff on, that seems to much like Runescape and the plethora of gimmicks that are coming out in that ilk (ala lost ark, albion etc....)
Instead, the new rendition of Diablo should still have zones that only a party of 4 (maybe 5?) can enter into at max. Still having that seclusive/private feel to the game imo is also ESSENTIAL for Diablo.
While i like d3 completely, i find myself playing for a while every season to do the journey and then i'm done, and that doesn't take really much. However, i don't want long grinds (making guardian objectives stuff like "reach 2k paragon" are even worse than current iteration).
Current gripes i have with the game:
- sets over sets over sets. Everyone like sets, but making them the source of builds doesn't look like the right strategy for me. Making one small set buff one/two abilities or create a synergy is awesome - having a set covering nearly all the inventory that makes the decisions for me is not exactly what i expected to become. Theroycrafting and best builds will always exist, and independently from the itemization system. Anyway taking out players choice towards a predetermined skillset is simply not appealing.
- paragon. I like the idea of infinite progression but having +damage and +defense until you cap at 800 then having +5 mainstat to inifnity is not an interesting progression, period. Also, the only actual reason to effectively grind paragon are ladders, otherwise they are a complete passive increase of power that is gained by doing something else and have next to zero purpose.
- lack of long term obejctives. Ladders are a fun competition for people who's interested in them, and GRs are fun until you realize that either you do GR or do nothing since they become very fast the only and best way to progress with your character. Fastest way to get XP/Paragon, gear, only way to level up gems and so on. Really, people do bounties only because they need to cube stuff and this season is just a little more due to the "cube 50 stuff" thing. And story mode is there forgotten and ignored. And then...nothing else basically. While GRs have a very definite and specific scope (ladder competition) there's a) stuff in game that has little (or no) purpose to be and nothing else for people not interested in ladders.
I would prefer having 1 larger map when entering a rift(or g.rift) rather then jumping to different levels which is annoying. Its very annoying when your almost done discovering the lvl 1 floor and you cant find the second floor. Its something small but if worries you because you just want to kill kill kill and not search search search.
Let players pick their map and mix all mobs from all acts.
Well... Rift floors are a part of the challenge if you ask me. If it only was one big fucking floor you only needed to get one good floor to be done with the gr. Where is the fun in that? Clear on floor and your done
I will admit I was optimistic there might be something revealed at Gamescon due to Quin being flown there, but now I'm more reserved. The tweet about Blizzcon being cool is nice, but it could just be a big celebration due to the anniversary of the franchise, not necessarily anything being announced.
I also don't get why many people think there will be an D2 HD release. Not once has Blizz ever stated/hinted at anything like that. Not saying it isn't possible, but I can't understand why so many people think this is something that IS going to happen. Plus, all this talk about the "new, unannounced project" very well could be a D3 expansion. Why too, do so many people think it has to be a new game entirely?
I don't take a lot of stock in a Forbes article either, but it is highly probable that the new content was part of an expansion. The talk of no new act doesn't mean the stuff added wasn't from a planned exp. Just like RoS and the D2 exp, there is generally only 2 new tiles sets for the new act, which were included in one of the patches. All they would have had to add is some cinematics, cut scenes, and some story to make it into an actual act...
Well there used to be 8 job postings for Diablo on the Blizzard site, Now after Gamescom there are only 5. Maybe crunch mode for Blizzcon? We can hope.

Those 5 are in addition to the 13 people they have already hired since last year May (2015).
They clearly have something going on in the Diablo Universe, aside from speculating, we really have no clue other than "something"
Well atleast now lost ark is in beta, can be watched on twitch, say bye bye to diablo when it gets to the Us/Eu
AHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHA i hope for you that you are on weeds or something LOL
That doesn't even... weed does not alter how you think, it's just a way to relax...
OT: He is actually right, lost ark will demolish any competition, specially since they have stated it will not be subscription nor pay to win, it will probably be buy once and play with some cosmetic microtransactions which means blizzard must step up.

Those Who Do Not Know True Pain Cannot Possibly Understand True Peace...
Well, from what I've seen Lost Ark seems to be an MMO...
And quite frankly, so far I'm not really that impressed by it.
You also have "Lost Eternal" coming out.
A D2 remake woudnt sell big. It only attracts the old school players who played Diablo before.
Honestly even a remake would look like crap. The game is freaking old. Making a new game or an expansion of D3 would be so much better in general.
Better for the company and gamers.
It's Lineage eternal
But y, we need an awesome d3 xpack or d4 at this point.

A D2 HD can be cranked out pretty quick, and there was an ad out in late 2015 advertising for developers for "legacy games" so something may be in the works. The advantage of doing D2 HD is mostly very little development effort.
D4 might be a possibility, but it is pretty far away timewise is my guess. D3 expansion seems pretty unlikely to me, given Blizzard's experience with D3 sales falling off a cliff from Vanilla to Reaper of Souls, and also their history with SC2 with each expansion selling less than the previous one.

Pretty sure all the 'legacy games' talk was to bring the legacy games to modern OS's so they can run without an emulator.
Blizzard's smart enough to realize a D2 remake would not help. It would cause a lot of community whining because obviously development time was not spent on a new game but instead of quick HD remake. And honestly it would only be a novelty - if it was truly just an HD remake, I'd play through once for fun, but that's it. And I spent years with D2. I think the majority of us would want to see something new.

FWIW, I do not think the HD remake is going to be just taking a 780-620 resolution and cleaning the edges. It will likely be a max resolution recreation of the product, even if simply put into the D3 engine, that is a major upgrade of graphics.
In fact, I would be willing to go a step further and notice that at Gamescom the art rendering was the wanderer in the D3 graphics engine. Could be speculation, but I think there is more to it!
BUT I SWEAR TO GOD THAT IT BETTER BE MORE THAN JUST A D2HD REMAKE!!!!
No, D2HD remake costs much much less energy than D3 xpac or D4, especially if you look at all the other HD remakes that have been made. It takes much, much less effort, and in November '15 they were hiring people for legacy games. A brand new game is likely to take them at least 5 years.

I love all this discussion, it shows me one thing that is of vast importance, PEOPLE STILL ABSOLUTELY CARE ABOUT THE DIABLO UNIVERSE!!!!
If we all keep this level of passion, we will get something new and innovative, which is awesome!!!!
they big mistake make in diablo 3 when they added World of warcraft elements into game
and removed diablo 2 elements from game
make game only legendry and sets items
crafting is bullshit
no cube crafts
no talents
no runes
no diversity
and easy level easy gear trillion dmg
for years ppl saying this , what blizzard doing ? exacly nothing
All we will get is an ANNOUNCEMENT of D2 HD remake. And that will be all. To be released somewhere in 2018 maybe.
NO D3 xpax/D4 of cause. Cause they have no people/resources for it.

Whatever, we are getting an expansion and D3 turning into OW's business model. So don't get overhyped on D4 or D2 HD.
