It's entering maintenance phase, just like D2 eventually did.
Though this might be true, my expectations are that we get 2 or 3 more large content patches likely due to them canceling/scrapping Xpac 2 in order to put more resources in their "New Diablo universe project".
That is what simply makes the most sense. I doubt they design D3 specific features and never implement them into the game. I for one would love a runeward system, an ability over paragon system, and difficulty that is not simply tied to Torment but actual playstyle. I feel all of these are staples of the Diablo universe, and were all part of a D3 xpac 2.

My guess, and there has been at least one report in Forbes that this is the case,is that we have already seen those content patches with Kanai's cube, the set dungeons, and all the new zones.

Well, friendly advice, NEVER listen to what Forbes says.
Secondly, the next D3 expansion was suppose to take us into the Amazon, and likely contain 2 new classes. The Cube was actually suppose to release on RoS launch, but it got delayed to be reworked. I also know there were 2 other features that were removed from RoS launch that they promised at some point in time we would see.
In the end, set dungeons, the cube, and new zones with no ACT are not an expansion. Any and ALL Diablo expansion or universe game WILL INDEED have a new act. FWIW, a new act can be introduced via a patch, it is simply whether they want to do that or not, which at this point, why not?
Not one bit of Diablo news from Gamescon 2016, guess we all have to wait for Blizzcon now instead to see if we get any announcement for the game.
Not true there were four important pieces of news:
Wyatt emphasing patches still being released for D2 and 3
Quin and the streamer from the other Legacy Diablo title dropped hints of something big coming.
Slight tease about Diablo "for" from Blizz
Quin stated he was going to play WoW Legion. Clearly we should all do this while we wait for D2 HD (Nov 16) and D4 2018.
I think we will only see more nerf/balancing patches from now until xpac or D4
To me, it's clear that Quin and MrLlama don't know anything more about the future of Diablo than just your average player. In hightsight, Quin and MrLlama were flown out there to make up for the lack of Diablo content. Not to hype the supposedly amazing Diablo content.
Until theres an official page on the Blizzard website, I wouldn't hold my breath for D2HD. Project Titan and Starcraft Ghost were widely known "secrets" and much development went into them. Only to have Starcraft Ghost cancelled and the project Titan MMO morph into Overwatch.
What I would personally love to see is a World of Diablo (probably not that name) where we get an MMORPG in the Diablo universe that is actually high quality graphics instead of the cartoonish-style they have with WoW.
What i have described are key components that make diablo games great! They could go any directions with the game but imo those game play factors HAVE to be there to make the games replay value to be rich. To say what i have said is a diablo clone is silly. First off, it is diablo lol so it wouldnt be clone. Also they could just do like 7 acts. Then make like 7 more acts you could play through for end game. ie; the first 7 acts get you to lvl 80 or w/e end game lvl is or close to let you play in such areas. Then acts 7 - 14 would just be all end game geared areas that all monsters are op and you need end game gear to be in. then maybe release a couple more acts that are extremly hard. Then maybe make some area's that are like rifts or maps on poe. i feel like diablo has always lacked with different environments for end game players to grind for loot in. Again what i desribed in my pervious post on page 8 needs to be there to make diablo great again. Pretty much any one that disagree's doesnt want a diablo game you want a different game, so go find a different game.
here's what i posted previously.
Has any one said a Diablo movie? Because that would be epic! Also if it
is Diablo 4. Blizzard better fix the trading. Diablo 2 was so fun due to
the trading. Also they better make it so items take a month to find
again! Not this you can get fully geared In a day stuff. Also I agree
make a better pvp. Some people say it's not a big factor but some
players love pvp.ie make a pvp char that the skills are layed out
different and pve with different skills for pve. Also go back to 8 man
parties. And please for the love of god it's 2016 let us use our mics in
game if we want. Also please please please make it so you can only set
your skills once, then you have to remake your character if you want to
try another build. This resetting your skills at any time is dumb. This
is a game for adults not mindless children. Also keep the skill tree the
same like d2 d3 don't go like poe but maybe give us more options with
each character as far as skills to choose from. Also make sets do good
damage for starting but making end game grinds and loots all about
uniques. Man I hope blizzard reads this, if they used these ideas they
would be bake to Diablo and not w/e direction they are going.
Also in regards to people thinking that not being able to reset your skills is dumb lol. you're lazy a.f. and maybe rpg's are not for you. They could always let you set them but at least make it so you have to grind for a item that lets you do that. Ie: a item like the cube that lets you add a socket to a item but this item lets you reset your skillz. only once then the item is gone. Also making its trade value high.
Also next to each skill have it so you can boost the potency of that desired skill up to 10 points, each point boosting that skills effectiveness by 10%. and only allow us to have like i donno a 100 of those points. Then they can make items that add +1 to all skills and items that add lvl to potency points. like a +2 to all potency making that items insanely hard to get because it makes all your skillz 20% more effective boosting dps or stuns or curses or w/e
Please pray to our lord and saviour that this is NOT going to happen. Worst possible outcome. There might be a certain amount of people playing and loving these kind of games but Blizzard would lose all of the original playerbase of the Diablo franchise that loved it because of its hack'n'slay capabilities. Also, I think this abomination would only happen if WoW would enter "maintenance-mode" and the MMORPG slot would become available.
This is an iffy subject because no one wanted WoW either. Warcraft if a strategy game. WoW lost all of the structure of a Warcraft game. To this day, very few games have been able to even approach the level and popularity of WoW.
If the hack and slash is a problem too, Action MMORPGs are a thing and they're quite popular. It's also worth noting that Diablo is practically dead. No one plays it. No one cares. An MMORPG could be literally the last hope for the entire universe. D3 isn't even half as big as D2 was.
I really don't know if there is really room in the world for more MMORPGs than WoW. So many people have tried, and so many MMORPGs have failed. Even WoW has less than half the playerbase it had at its peak.
I certainly wouldn't be the one sticking my neck out in a games company to push out another MMORPG.
I'd love to see a Diablo 4 game or a Diablo 3 expansion even. I really would. I play WoW and I enjoy it a lot. I'm really not a picky gamer. WoW gives me a sense where I always have so much I can do in the game because of the nature of an MMORPG. The biggest reason I would want a Diablo MMO is because of just that. I'd be able to play for months on end and not run out of things to do. The flip side, though, is I'd be worried about them taking the grindy nature of Diablo out. I love the grind in this game. WoW has had very, very few grinds. The only one left in the game is basically one of the reputations. And then there's the other things people think are grinds, but they're really not.
@Tanner. The not running out of things to do in a hackemslash rpg like d2 and d1 comes from trading. Making it way harder to find the god tier items. God i remember farming old school D2 before rune words for the grandfather sword AND NEVER FOUND IT! AND I LOVED IT. I wanted more. So cause i couldnt find it i WORKED HARD and farmed like a mad man for currency and traded for one. THAT FACTOR of gaming is priceless and something DIablo did first before all others. And they lost that in d3. That factor makes the replay value rich while still being able to add content.
Season 7 i literally was fully geared and most of my items were perfect for their slots in two days. Also lvl 600 paragon on day 3. That to me is not diablo. I want it to take months on end to get to 99. and i want to break my key board because i die at level 98 and lose a fat chunk of exp. I WANNA TRY AND TRADE SCAM PEOPLE I WANT SAY HEY SEXY IM A CHICK GIVE ME YO SHIT I WANT D2 BACK. : ) plz? Thanks. K bye.
I think that we will get some sort of information at Blizzcon regarding the future of the Diablo franchise. There is a lot of heat on them for some sort of update, but they are also focusing a lot of energy into shoring up the WoW release, wrapping up SC2, and building Heroes and Overwatch. Overwatch is important because of it's MLG potential and is a nice compliment in that setting to Hearthstone and SC2. Hearthstone is getting the Karazhan expac, so the only group that really didn't see any love is Diablo. By November, a lot of that the work on other properties will be in release, so they could have resources to focus on a "new property in the Diablo universe."
Crazy thought: I think Diablo is going to have to pick up more MMO-style features in order to keep replayability high. But I don't see it becoming a WoW clone. If anything, I'd imagine a World of Diablo to be much more akin to Guild Wars. That said, I'm not super crazy on the idea of a GW clone. I got bored with GWs way faster than I ever did with WoW. But maybe that's me.

Just my $0.02.
They'd have to find a good balance between the stuff they do in WoW, and the stuff that other MMOs do that is good. A Diablo MMO, though, might NTP be the best idea while WoW is still flourishing. WoW might be down in lower numbers, but those numbers are still much higher than every other MMO out there. It would seem silly for Blizzard to basically kill their own game with another MMO. It would probably be more likely that we see a new MMO after WoW is in maintenance mode, like Zwang said.
Just my opinion, but the pure arpg genre is on the way out. The up and coming "heavy hitters" that people are super excited for (lost ark, albion online, lineage eternal to name a few) are all really different from each other and cater to different players but they all have one thing in common, they are hybrids. Lost Ark for example is mmo/aarpg. I think Blizzard knows this and that's why they are looking for a new Diablo team. They can blend genres really well as proven with Overwatch. They also take proven formulas and benchmark them to make them epic. I know Blizzard can do it, they just need to get clear on what they want to accomplish with this IP. Just the way I see things and is neither truth, fact, or anything to take to heart. Just an observation.

I want the whole losing xp thing to be a part of dying in Softcore, would really penalize people for only regarding one aspect of character creation.
Regarding no player trading, removing the gold ah was just dumb, but having the rmah was even more moronic. There fix for that issue was doing two wrong things and praying it became a positive, which it did not, so to fix it they greatly increased drop rates. Yet that was a third wrong, really compounding the problem.
In the end, I think Blizzard as a whole is learning (FINALLY) from their past mistakes, and I look forward to what the future holds for Diablo!!!

Nothing is real to me until there's an open beta.
Blizzard caused a massive amount of hype for the Diablo universe with their Twitter post that was on the front page of DiabloFans yesterday.
