Seriously out of all the arguments this week, this one just seems like a no brainer.
Yeah, Im stupid, I KNOW.
I need to rephrase.
I want offline mode to play single mode. Thats all and having the option to connect if I want. I have never used hacks, mods or dups etc. I dont like cheaters, but then again - i dont need to meet them if I play offline, right?
No, you may not want or need them, but the logic that Blizzard is using is that if they include all of the files you'd need to play single player offline, it makes it much easier for people to make hacks/bots. They can't really put an 'honor system' in place and hope that everyone just holds up their promise to not bot or dupe.
The debate as to whether or not having online only really WILL prevent hacks and bots is a separate debate.
I see the logic but i disagree with the terms. I know Im "honorable".. or whatever it is called these days.
You think you're the only one? Of the MILLIONS of people who will be purchasing the game, you wont be able to say how many is dishonorable out there. So stop being selfish & instead start looking for ways for you to be able to connect on-line & play the game.
Previous poster reiterated what I said. If Blizzard gave us access to the character files it would be easier for people to crack. And even if you say you are "honorable," game hackers aren't.
True. They'll do anything to be greater than others.
I know... Sad however there is no easy fix. Why not have them online, then let us get into the game, load whole game and then be OFFLINE until i finish the game.. In that way I could at least play it ONCE when im traveling!
WHAT???
Sorry, no cigar, but that's still the same thing.
If you travel a lot like you say, then better start Googling for places with Wi-Fi connections at your destination or pay for a WAN subscription plan from Verizon.
If you're saying you know but still you keep on insisting, then, as much as I feel sorry for you, there is no way in hell that you'll be able to play a game that was created based on a Client-and-Server frame structure without an on-line connection, may you want to play Single Player (solo) or Co-op (multi-player mode).
To those who still don't get it. Even if you like playing off-line & solo mode, the Diablo III game wont change for you.
Just like Jay Wilson said, basing from the problems that they have seen with the Diablo II community & all the other Blizzard games, and to prevent these issues from being an issue on what they concluded as an enjoyable casual new type of game, they designed Diablo III to run on and only on a Client-And-Server based structure.
This has nothing to do with you thinking you're honorable & that you'll keep your word... you're just one of the MILLIONS of users who will be playing the game. So in general, for Blizzard to be able to protect the game & the community of honest players from those cheats, dishonorable & dishonest people who would do anything to hack the system, they implemented security procedures & protocols that would be able to prevent such issues, and the bottom line is, YOU HAVE TO BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET TO BE ABLE TO PLAY THE GAME ON BATTLE.NET, MAY YOU BE PLAYING SINGLE PLAYER OR CO-OP PLAY.
Now, if you're really one of those hard headed people with thick skulls that cannot accept the fact, then you have the choice & all the rights of not buying Diablo III & not playing it on-line.
So, for the naysayers out there, it's time to man up and start thinking on how you will be able to get that good internet connection, to be able to enjoy playing the game, may you be a soloist or in co-op mode.
Time to start checking for Starbucks or coffee shops near your place that offers free Wi-Fi connection or see your local library for posibilities. So that when the hardware compatibility issue comes up (with Diablo running on a new 3D engine & all for lusher graphics), you'll only have one other problem to worry about.
If you're using a desktop, then question will be, is how will you be able to acquire an internet connection:
1st. Pay your local internet & cable service provider for a new subscription.
2nd. Or you can purchase a LAN card & connect to your neighbors unsecured network.
3rd. Or you could bring your stuff & then go to a friends house, do a sleep over as long as he would let you & play with him co-op for hours day in, day out.
Whatever your solution will be, better get movin' while there's still lots of time before the game's release.
I would love to know what happens for the people who live in different countries where the server is not located in that different country. Cause for wow i know there is no Australian servers and our ping sucks being 200-300 ping. This will kill us in diablo 3.... It has nothign to do with what internet connection you have... It has to do with the server location...
Use regular text size. Differing text sizes give me headaches and looks like you're begging for attention.
- No offline play means all items found are in the pool of things to trade and buy.
- This is also a step towards fixing item dupes and hacks and whatnot, if not fixing them.
The only reasons that I can come up with that I would want to play offline are:
1- I have limited internet connectivity and I can't maintain a decent connection to play this game
2- I don't want to play with other people because I'm 10 and have no idea how to act in an environment like that.
3- I want to hack the game and whirlwind to victory on infinite w/e.
Rebuttals:
1 - If you cant afford decent internet, you should probably fix that. If you're in a bad area for it, you should probably fix that. Else stop whining about video game.
2 - If you really are 10, the games going to be rated "M". If you're just antisocial and don't want to talk to people, don't let others in your game.
3 - There is no place for you in this game, find a different one.
4 - Don't bring up travelling, you can get wireless / internet at hotels, planes, and I'm sure you can get them on trains. Automobiles, you probably shouldn't play while driving.
This whole debate comes down to what you believe. I believe this is an excellent idea. I don't want cheating in my game and this helps with that. This also adds to the item pool, and I'm down with that.
I saw someone talking about how he's honorable. Well, ok you're honorable, but how about other people? If they give you offline play because you're honorable, they have to give other people that might not be so honorable offline play, too. And what if they develop some sort of hacking engine off that? The same problems that plagued D2 will show up in D3. Just because you're honorable doesn't mean anyone else is. And I can bear, with enormous fortitude, your discomfort in not being able to play offline if it helps my game.
However, this discussion is pointless. If this game is designed in a server / client structure, there actually cannot be a single player offline mode. It's just not possible, because if it was, it'd simply not be a server / client structure. It'd be like playing WoW offline. Also if you think 200-300 ping is bad, stop whining. That's not unplayable, that's barely even noticeable. 500 is difficult, 600+ I would think would be unplayable for D3. So you should be fine.
This doesn't affect me at all and I find it absolutely retarded. Hacks and Bots will find their way into the game regardless of the game being online only. Absolutely ridiculous that the game is going to be online only.
Here is an idea. Have the single player game offline and enjoy. Then say there are other things you -need- to be able to play multiplayer, and those are located on the servers, and you can only access them when online and logged in, so that you don't have access to the files directly (Not sure why this changes anything, but everybody seems to think it does, so whatever) and then you loose access when you log off, but you still can play single player offline.
There we go, just solved the "issue" about offline for Blizzard. No more excuses, aside from the "Blizzard is awesome and they cannot make a mistake" argument.

This coming from some one who:
A) Doesn't understand that companies need to make money.
B ) Doesn't realize that Kotick was talking about Activision IP and not Blizzard.
C) Doesnt understand that Morhaine, not Kotick, is "ruining" companies.
Online only = best idea ever. If you can't be near internet to play, maybe it's time for a new hobby. You don't go on a jet and complain you can't take your WW-2 replica rifle and shoot it, "It's what I choose to do with my spare time, i should be able to use it where/when I want WAHHHH"
Spoiled brats and people who have become too accustomed to getting what they want all the time. Welcome to real world.
Its curbing dupes and easy bot testing, I'm totally for it, sounds like your just a mad botter/duper to me.

See for myself i don't have a problem with being online always. I just fear where the location of the servers will be and my ping rate. Diablo is not like wow where ping is not really important when for Diablo every split second counts especially for Hardcore... Not everyone lives in usa....

What internet are you using? High speed internet (To where its non issue) is so affordable now a days. It's really an investment to get better internet, if not available, it's like I said, this just may not be for you. Few conforms to many, not many to few; it's a bit harsh, but it's how things need to work in this world.
If you are attached to a land mass, or part of a common wealth, you should be able to get good speeds, if your oceanic, you just get fucked since game companies seemingly don't care about oceanic players.

I would be classed as oceanic players.... sigh... Australia that is... I do have good internet the max speed i get is 850KB/s so its acceptable...
Not sure if this was stated since I decided to not read through post, but I believe it was mentioned in one of the Force videos that having online would actually benefit the community because people wouldn't be able to bot and dupe in the single player offline, which would have given them the ability to abuse the auction house.
All for the idea of needing to play online, it will assist in stopping hackers/dupes if not totally stop it. For all the people whining about single player.. get over it. You coming on the forums and complaining that you live in a cave and have bad internet connection is not going to get you single player.
Look at it this way, diablo 3 is built on a battle.net platform which is brand new i might add. Removing/changing it (which is never going to happen lol) is the only way you would get single player. The only concern i might have myself is, that living in Australia some issues might arise with connecting to distant servers. But I'm sure this is somthing blizzard will look closely into and not just for Australia :).

Yeah i hope they do to, so we can avoid (using lower ping programs) which is actually quite annoying. Considering you have to pay for most of them.
One of these days your internet's going to go out, or the servers will be offline for days, and you wont be able to play single player, and it will be the lamest experience you have ever had and a voice form inside of you will scream, 'WHY CANT I PLAY SINGLE PLAYER OFFLINE'
and your mind will shatter because of the illogical paradox of having to be connected to play ""single player"", and maybe if your not that manly you will then proceed to cry, but that's another story.

I seem to remember reading blue post about there being an Oceanic server for those in Australia and South East Asia. Can't find it though. Basically it will exists but when you play when you play on that one you won't have any connection to the US realm.

My PvP build would be different from these 13.
