Ill get started saying that I in fact do play tennis for a living.....I also coach people for a pretty penny. Now I was thinking about it last night that the new skill system is like Tennis. Essentially in tennis the builds are nearly endless same with Diablo 3. Now in tennis everyone has every single shot in the game but obviously some people have those shots but have improved it.....some people dont improve it but they still have that shot. For example a serve. Here you have a normal serve doesn't really do anything except going where it suppose to go. Now lets put a crimson rune in it and you have an absolute cannon 200km easy. Alabaster you have a nasty kicker that kicks like a mule once it hits the ground. Golden turns it into a greaasy slice the spin away from the opponent then you can have a serve volley/body serve what ever.
The combinations are huge just as it is in Diablo 3 and this new skill system. Yeah you have every skill but unless you put a nice rune in there that you like (god hope they dont put runes on AH)there are going to be spells you won't use at all, I am sure of this. Now lets get to the active skill your allowed at a time, so lets say your forehand and your serve are going to be your 2 weapons, you will be using these spells the most, but if you get into a situation where you have to volley (offense) or the guy has a mean serve and you need to return well (defense) and you dont have decent volleys or returns(different spell for the right occasion) your going to be shit out of luck. Then you decide to whipe out that spell that might work buttt unless there is a rune in there its going to be tough for you. Now this leads to extremely tough decisions. I havent even gone into the spins used in tennis. Who would you rather be Roger Federer who has honed his game to have exceptional everything or the guy top 50 in the world who has great groundstrokes and is fit but just doesnt have the variety.
And then there are pasives which could be linked to your footwork or your speed or your fitness or just your sheer mental ability to stay on top. Which ones would you choose for they are all important, more tough decisions. You could use analogies everywhere but I used tennis because it was easy for me haha.....Also to any grammar nazis I am sorry for my horrendous grammar.
Well then theres tactics and gameplans. Obviously if you play a player who you have seen play before and know how they play (group of mobs, pvp) you already know what you have to do. But if you're playing someone who you have no idea of how they play, you have to go to basics which is do what your good at and see if it works.....if it doesn't then you need to change it up. Your probably going to get smoked(die) a few times changing your gameplan(skills) but once you get it right there is nothing stopping you......unless they are just damn right too good for you(a guy with epic loot or the Big D himself!!!!). But then you practice (get better loot/grind).
That is one of the most interesting ways to look at the game I've read so far... and I love it! lol makes perfect sense. Definitely thumbs up to this post.

I thought so to! Had to share it.....the only difference is I can play tennis right now BUT NOT DIABLO 3 GRRRR!
To be honest, and I've seen this a lot over my time following video games... if you know something REALLY well you can make an analogy for anything else being like it. The better you know two things, the more likely you are to see correlations between them.
I saw it this way, but without the analogy to tennis. Every Barbarian is able to do the same things, but some just to it better, because they specialized in it.
This skill system sounds so awesome, everybody who is ranting about it should spend a few minutes thinking about it and they will see the awesomeness about it. Skillpoints are so 2010....
Hmmm..........some of you nerds actually know what an outside sport is.............impressive.
However, if they let us spectate PvP games.... I hope it is better than the head turn, head turn, head turn, head turn of tennis. Sure, it may be fun for you to analyze the serve, etc. but what about those of us who can only keep track of one or two classes' abilities?

P.S- sorry for the wall.
P.P.s- sorry if you dont like tennis
:smug:
You could also make an analogy like this for say weapons (rackets).
But it's a good read, either way.
I kid, damn I need to get back in shape.
OP, the analogy works, nicely done.
