So I have seen a few people complaining about no offline mode. I can understand how they feel some people don't have access to internet and would still like to play the game. But think of it this way.
In D2 people used the fact that they had access to all those files to learn more about them and change them around. Then they took that to another level and use this to affect online gaming. People were able to import items from offline to online and they were able to MAKE these items on offline with a simple copy/paste. They also used the information learned from the offline files to make dupe methods/mods/bots/hacks.
So by making everyone server side Blizzard can better watch over these files and pinpoint any type of hack/mod/bot/dupe or any other sort of alteration to the normal way the game would be played and kill it before it spreads.
I for one am 100pct for that. I hate the D2 economy as it is currently. All it is are bots and the occasional player trying to make enough to make a hdin to... bot. Or the people on D2jsp that spend all day duping/importing and selling stuff to make more FG. (jewel shops rune sellers and so on so forth. Even a few importers showing up now)
I think those are the reasons D2 is as dead as it is. Even for such an old game it had a very strong economy throughout its many years. But now imo its officially dying.... Prices are at a all time low... Markets are all flooded.... GGs aren't really even GG anymore because you can obtain everything you need with a bit of time botting.
Blizzard is going to make sure this won't happen for D3 and I don't care how they do it as long as they do. So we have to give up offline play mode oh well its for the good of the game! So I think I speak for everyone who wants legit gameplay a removal of cheaters. GO BLIZZARD DO WHAT U GOTTA DO!
DO NOTE THIS IS NOT SAYING THIS WILL PREVENT ALL HACKS/BOTS IT WILL IN FACT DRASTICALLY REDUCE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO DO ABUSE THESE SYSTEMS TO PROGRESS IN THE GAME TO A POINT WHERE IT WON'T BE THAT NOTICEABLE. ALSO THIS IS ALL SPECULATION AND HOPES NOT A GUARANTEE!
There will proberbly still be people trying to hack the game and some WILL have success, but hopefully it's gonna be hard as hell for them ..
There will always be these people but with the way they have it they should and hopefully will be able to stop these people before it does any damage to the game/economy. With the files and everything being stored server side they can keep a close watchful eye on everything and stomp out these people and send their 50 bucks down the drain.
I hope they make a very up to date warden and script it like a boss so it can just run around bitch slapping all the hackers with a ban!

I love all loot fest kind of game! I will be playing all of them for the next few years. Loot fest games I'm looking forward to: LotR: War in the North,Torchlight 2,Borderlands 2 and of course Diablo 3.
Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.
The ability to hack in D2 has nothing to do with its offline mode, it is simply an old game with an old server structure. Removing offline mode was not done to prevent hacking, and if it would make a return it would not mean the return of hacking. I just want to point that out.
You are actually completely wrong. For those of you who aren't familiar with game development/how games work, here's an important fact: an offline mode would require all game data and much of the server code to be stored directly in the game client.
One of the most important things about having no offline mode is that the client/server architecture can be constructed in a way that ensure the client gets very little information, and most of data is stored server side. I imagine things such as items, all player related data, abilities, stash, etc. to all be server-side information that the game client (user) only receives the bare minimum amount of information. This makes hacking, reverse engineering, etc. much more difficult (notice I said difficult, not impossible), as well as trackable/detectable by Blizzard.
You may tout is as DRM, what have you, but this decision was not made to prevent "piracy." All signs point to this decision being made to ensure that D3 is as secure as possible from hacking, botting, etc., and to prevent Auction House abuse. And really, this is no different that Guild Wars, or (the old) HoN, or any of the myriad of other Buy-To-Play multiplayer only games.
""Ohh the internet's out dang, oh well, guess il just play some single player Diablo 3...
oh wait,, @$#@$@$#@$#@$#$@$@%!%$#%$#@%@#$%@%%%$@%#@%#@%#@@%#@@@###%##@##$#@##%@#%#%""
I am sorry but Diablo 3 will be hacked in a week just like SC2 was. Keep telling your selfs that Diablo 3 won't be hacked. Because well all know that WoW has no hack or botters in it right? O wait wrong its rampant and they fight gold farmers.
O but not in D3 gold farmers now have a legal way of doing it. Not to mention that you are a medium for selling items for Blizzard because the DRM makes all items their no matter if you pay for it or not.

While hacks exist in WoW most of them are not that powerful.
There are speed hacks and bots because botting is just using complex scripts with a 3rd party program.
I have yet to ever find someone with god mode enabled or hacked gear in WoW. I also have never seen a single case of duping which was RAMPANT on Diablo 2.
Agreed, while hacking does occur it is infrequent at most. Also the general community reports said players to Blizzard (in WoW at least) due to great dislike of their ilk.

Even WoW doesn't have that much information purely server side. I'd love to see the huge drain on the server when ridiculous amount of things has to be downloaded by the client.
Lots of things are handled server side now, I'm sure, but those things have nothing to do with having an offline mode or not.
I'm actually completely confused by that cryptic argument. Almost everything you need HAS to be stored client side or the game won't even run properly. The amount of things a server can do is minimal.
Yes, there are lots of checks and security measures that servers takes which is why a constant internet connection is required to play online... But I fail to see how any of it prevents an offline mode with separate characters.

Well the way they are setting it up is that its practically a pseudo MMO.
I doubt you will see the ability to play it alone for quite a while, since you will likely need to get a private server type setup which WoW has at this point but did not for a long time.
This game will be accessing a lot of the data from the Blizzard servers just like WoW does.

You're also forgetting that the system is Blizzard controlled and therefore safe, no longer shady, and player driven for pricing, supply, and demand.

In WoW there is also community modding with addons and ui's. However I believe all character data is stored server side. The amount of things a server can do is immense and it's not as if there is only one server doing all these tasks alone.
Yeah. So? Battle.net character can be stored on the Blizzard servers while the SP ones will be on our hard drive. Who cares if someone cheats in SP. The battle.net is the real deal, there will be, hopefully, no cheaters there.
It reminds to WoW private servers. Some offer an easy access to various items, but once you start playing on the legal servers, you actually need to put some effort into it.
You don't quite get it. It's not just about the character save file, or however that information is stored in D3. It's a whole lot of data, as well as server code.
An example from a game I worked on a few years ago:
The game is Online Only. Monster AI & pathfinding code had no reason to ever be included in the client, as this was all handled server side and then broadcast to each client in the game. Therefore, that code is completely inaccessible to a player, making reverse engineering of that system very difficult. If the game had also included an Offline Mode, that AI and pathfinding code would have to exist in the installed copy for the game to function.
I honestly think its BS Hackers and botting has nothing to do with offline. I think that this is a crappy excuse to remove it. Why do I have to be forced to play online? To hell with battle.net I want to play offline on my own. No I dont want to go to battle.net and make a private game. There servers drop or something guess what im out of a private game. Now I cant play at all. Sc2 had an nice offline system that I used A L O T and I really enjoyed it. Now why the hell cant I do the same for Diablo3?

I'll personally give you that.
I know WoW keeps scripting server side. Though we have no idea how much they will hold back.
But that would hinder pirate more than anything. I don't see how what they can hold back will really hinder bots and the like. And I could get into a heated argument that the very little security you gain here is not worth having to be online at all time for everybody on the planet, but that was besides your point.
So basically your argument is that Diablo 3 doesn't have single player because that way everything will be stored server side, kinda like Diablo 2's Closed Bnet?
But... Diablo 2's Closed Bnet was full of hacks and dupes and whatnot...

Thats actually not what he's saying at all. I think he proved that much at this point.

Unfortunately, this is incorrect (as previously stated)*. It does have an impact, but it is not really worth discussing. And, true, we can't really be absolutely certain why Blizzard decided to remove single player. This is really just the best educated guess as to why.
