Maybe thats their "end game", would be cool with a 4th difficulty that unlocks when you beat hell/hit lvl 60.
Nice find BTW, maybe its an unintentional leak or just a mix up with the names of the difficulties, hopefully its not a mix up.
Nope, no mix up there. It's an interview with Kevin Martens in his reply to the question, "How are you approaching balancing the game’s overall difficulty?"
Kevin Martens said: "When it comes down to balancing the actual numbers, there is an expected amount of damage output that players should be able to sustain based on their level and gear. There is no absolute benchmark though, as skillful players will be able to do more damage with speed, precision, and advanced attack combos, while less experienced players will generally do less damage with more straight-forward attacks. The expected damage is a starting point to balance from. Balance must be maintained for both players types, and everyone in between, which can be tricky. Ultimately, it’s going to take the game's harder difficulty modes -- Hell and Inferno -- to challenge the limits of the best Diablo III players."
With the big emphasis on the word "and". It is a definite fact that after you beat the Hell level, Inferno would be a secret level that will appear afterwards (like a prize for those hardcore players who wants to beat the game one last time). lol!
If it's better than the Hell level, then maybe we get better drops with lots of items being legendary. =P~
Can't wait for the Beta to come out... with more than 2 Trillion build combinations, this game would be epic.
Someone asked how many skill combinations are there now?
Quoted from Bashiok's Blue Poster notes:
"Well taking into account 6 active skills, all the rune combinations, and 3 passives we currently expect each class to have roughly 2,285,814,795,264 different build combinations. That’s not taking into account skill types for ‘ideal’ builds, but that’s always been a big part of the fun of experimenting (and longevity for Diablo II) - finding a build that shouldn’t work, and making it."
It's probably just the hardcore name for hell. Why would they hide such an important detail from the fansite event?
^This. I don't know why but i think this is the case.
If there was any 4th difficulty i think it would've been announced already.
Like I mentioned in my reply:
And I quote: "With the big emphasis on the word "and". It is a definite fact that after you beat the Hell difficulty level, Inferno would be a secret level that will appear afterwards (it might be a surprise level, that's like a prize for those hardcore players who wants to beat the game one last time). lol!

This is totally off topic, but when I read inferno I had flashbacks of playing Cinder on Killer Instinct for SNES.
On topic, Hell difficulty never failed to whoop my ass. So I'd be surprised to see D3 come out with four difficulties right off the bat. I think it could be something to look into for future expansions though, if hell isn't hellish enough, which I highly doubt.
I doubt D3 will come out with four difficulty levels right off the bat, since they never mentioned the Inferno level, not once. Like I said, it might be a secret difficulty level that will only appear after a hardcore Diablo III player beats the Hell level.

It might be, but it is not. They didn't announce it during the fansite event for the very obvious reason... it's a secret (a secret level at that). Maybe, they only plan to reveal it on BlizzCon or during the release of the game but whatever their plan was, it wont be a surprise for us here anymore.

You are aware of the fact that this thread is about that exact article right?
And why write "no mix up there" when it has not been confirmed yet to be not a mix up?
I doubt its a mix up my self, but you write it like its a fact that there will bdifficultyulty levels, unless you have a confirmation from blizzard?
Question is... How will this add up to the previously announced amount of tiers in the gear?
Since this would be a secret level... and Blizzard does not reveal secrets ahead of time, i.e. like when is the release date or what is the additional content they plan?
Then that means they made an additional set of gear tiers prior to/or after their announcement. Which ever it is, still, it might be a secret level that would only appear after you beat the Hell difficulty. It would definitely keep you stuck on your seat days on.
Now, if Beta runs smoothly & Blizzard is able to do the final calibrations on their system to be secured from BOT farmers & hackers, then release the game before the Yuletide holiday, I'll be so happy, I might cry... lol! Then, we'll all get to play the game for days without worry.
Blizz is not responding on the BNet forums, which makes me think that it really is a 4th difficulty and they didn't mean for this to slip out just yet.
...skips nightmare mode. There's no reference for what the two modes--Hell and Inferno--are harder than. It could be that they changed the name of Nightmare, we don't know.
The images we have seen might have been taken in an older build. Things could have been renamed.
Personally? Yes, I agree that it's probably another endgame challenge. But that does not mean that we can take this as fact simply because we want it to be true. Maybe there's a fudge cake in front of me because I want it to be there. After all, I'm hungry. Maybe because I'm hungry the cake exists.
It cannot be any clearer on that screen : dood completed Nightmare (it IS nightmare, not Pancakes or whatnot) AND he's a hardcore player.
So if in Hardcore mode Hell becomes Inferno, why even keeping Nightmare named Nightmare ? You guys just don't make any sense.
So actually yes, that Inferno thing is quite intriguing and we'll have to know more.
You answered a question I posted in another topic - "Why would I play Hardcore?" Now I know - it's so I can struggle, die, swear, try again and complete Pancake Difficulty!
What IF (notice the 'IF') Inferno was a difficulty that can only be tackled with team of 3 or 4 players? Kinda like the final insentive to get solo players going for co-op. And like others have said, with a small (really small) chance to find 'heroic' gear. This gear would stand as an achievement for having played Inferno and wouldnt be 'IM GONNA ONE_SHOT YOU!' awesome, but just a tinny tinny little bit better then Hell gear. So you wouldnt get a huge advantage from this gear over other players, but more like something to brag about to your friends.
any advantage is a big advantage to min/maxers

I found this interview by looking at the source code of the page for the beta announcement of D3. It's a short interview but it has some pretty cool stuff, I'm not sure if it was part of the press kit or not. I'm also not sure why it's not available from the side menu on the page, maybe it was meant to be released later?
Interesting tidbit about D3's difficulty modes. Kevin mentions "hell and inferno" as being the games harder difficulty modes, I'm curious if it goes Normal, Nightmare, Hell, Inferno?
This picture shows that Nightmare difficulty is indeed in the game. Four difficulty modes!?!
I've a hard time thinking we will run the same acts 4 times . . .
Inferno is problably the end game of D3, but i don't think it's an entire new difficulty. Maybe it's a couple of special generated dungeons that are just insanely hard to be done.
I'm expecting the end game to be coop only. A extreme end game challenge shouldn't require anything less then perfection from the player. I don't think it's possible to creat a extreme challenge balanced both for solo and for multiplayer, so they will have too choose one.
Move from solo to multiplayer is easy and natural. Move from groups to isolation is not something a lot of people are up to do. So, i believe they will pick coop end game.
If there is a fourth difficulty it's probably insanely hard.
Something like creatures in Hell range from 45-59 and then everything in Inferno will be 60.
This is how I see it. Blizzard already declared the level ranges, with Hell being 50-60. Hopefully Inferno will be a game difficulty fully dedicated to supplying endgame content. Meaning, of course, the level range for Inferno would be strictly level 60 only.
Perhaps it will contain the highest quality loot by far, and (hopefully) not be solo-able.
Has anyone tried to get a response from blizz about this
This thread was posted twice when it came out, i believe someone in the other thread said they would post about 9it on the official forums but since the thread got locked we didn't hear anything back, would be nice to get a a statement about this from a dev.

My PvP build would be different from these 13.
