To expand upon the random nature of the game, I think it would be cool to be able to gamble gold on fights. Maybe one of the cities we visit in this game will have a 'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena' type pit where we can gamble on a criminal or monster vs. an undetermined/random competitor(s). Once we pay the fee to gamble with, the unnamed competitor steps out, we watch the fight play out, and then we either collect the winnings or walk away poorer. I understand that most of the populace in Sanctuary doesn't believe in demons or monsters so maybe this pit could take place in a hardened Barbarian camp so random monsters could be generated. I mean... Blizzard does want more ways for us to sink gold right? And gambling wouldn't be unprecedented in a Diablo title. I'm thinking of the item gambling in the previous game. That was a really cool extra feature.
Given some good'ol Blizzard polish and de-bugging I would most definitely participate in this. It be EvE (AI vs AI), PvE, or PvP I could see this working out really nicely.
A percentage of the winning would be kicked from the economy, while the winner(s) would split the rest.
Maybe a percentage could also be given to any live participant in the battle, if such a system would work out.
Go mention this on Twitter just to make sure the Blizz team sees, this lol. Go!

Players VS NPCs? This could be very hard to design a NPC suitable for a player to fight, either too hard or too weak, the NPCs lack of AI, you can only boost their stats.
Gambling over PVP would be more reasonable.
The problem I see is that with Sanctuary to the brink of destruction it's really hard for me to visualize the people doing this activies, and even more considering the enemy would be a demon or the such...
Very cool idea. The only way I see it being really compelling though is if it pertained to hardcore mode PvP, which I think is already shaping up to be insanely interesting; for those who missed the clarification, Jay Wilson stated at Blizzcon 2010 that hardcore mode PvP is no different than PvE, if you die you die.
This would demand some kind of spectator mode which they've been really shy towards (I agree with them, though this could be a very cool exception). Doesn't sound like that's in the cards for release but this would be a nice addition for the first Xpac...
I agree that chances are it won't make it in the release. (HEY LOOK we agree ). Although for discussion's sake, I don't think this idea could be limited to just PvP.
I'll try to explain it as I see it, and keep it short enough to not deter readers.
This description is for EvE, or MvM if you'd like. Pretty much monsters fighting eachother only controlled by AI. So an AI dog fight pretty much.
You walk into the act 2 city, in an off corner where the buildings look broken down, and the streets hardly seem maintained you find a scruffy NPC. Upon talking to him he asks you if you'd like to take part in a "dog fight" of sorts.
After saying yes, and purchasing your ticket (This is the first was Gold you exit the economy) you are granted entrance to the area behind him, where in a square pit in the ground there are 4 huge creatures chained in each corner. After talking to a merchant behind a table, and placing your bet on who you think will win, and how much you'd like to bet you're instructed to wait for the fight to start.
At the sound of the bell the creatures are released, and they go at each other.
The rest plays out as a dog fight would as speaking of how gold would be handled after the fight is over.. Although if you are the only real person partaking in the bet, all your money would be kicked from the economy if you were to loose the bet. (Which is a great thing for the community as a whole lol.)
If say, 4 people bet, one on each monster, than obviously one person would have won, and thus gets the others bets.
This could also work with PvE.
In a game with 4 people, one could be against the creature(s) and the others would bet on who the think will win, player or monsters. Maybe there would even be different creatures for him to fight against.
This is is obviously a VERY early concept, and something that will likely never make it into the game even if the team picks it up, but with enough refinement I could see it working.

Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.

Hmm, without the hardcore element, especially RE: PvNPC dueling I guess I'm just lost as to where the intrigue would be.
Having something like this for softcore PvP would still be pretty interesting, though. There's no observer mechanic that we've heard of, but granted they ever do implement it, one would think some kind of betting mechanic would be extremely easy to implement.
You'd think an observer mechanic would be easy to place, but I'm sure there are micro features that Blizzard would want to add to make it a viable feature.
Btw I edited my earlier post describing my view on how it could work.. Upon rereading it I realized how tired I was when I wrote it from my grammar mistakes, which made it all the more confusing lol..

Hence gambling.
+1 for the initial idea, love it.

It wouldn't be off topic to discuss both, as I've been doing.
Honestly, betting in npc duels would be lame, i wouldn't even waste my time.
Now pvp, thats a different story... no idea on how to implement it thought, having a list on all pvp games going and choosing which one to obs? Being able to check the teams gear and level and such?

Most people would agree there's something more appealing to betting on PvP. Though say you're a loner, and enjoy playing the game by yourself. PvE, and EvE betting systems would still have a niche.

Good idea and I hope its in the game. Even if not, people can organize their own betting system on forums. Main problem I think is there's no way to spectate arena matches. Maybe Blizzard will add that feature eventually though.
I can be that it would be harder than Hell to implement - probably delay the game for another 10 years - but it would be awesome!
I'd bet gold on any fight that doesn't have me, driving a Wizard against anyone. But then again, I hate PVP.
