Let me start off by saying that I am new to these forums but am a huge Diablo fan, so I don't know if this topic has been discussed yet. (I also need something to talk about for my first post an this is the first thing I could think of).
So my question is when you play with your friends you are obviously more than likely be at a different spot in the game than some of them, so your artisans may be at a different level than theirs are. So how will that look in the game? Will each player have his/her own caravan, or will there just one caravan and other players will have to pay to use your artisans? (kind of like in D2 when you haven't rescued cain yet and you had to pay him to id items if you were in someone else's game)
Any clarification on this subject would be nice, and if this topic has already been discussed just tell me so. Im not afraid of sounding stupid. But if it hasn't feel free to voice your own opinions or theories of how this might work.

@Upgradez I could've faceplanted on the keyboard and still killed everything in act 1.
Im not positive, but im pretty sure they said that everyone will only see their own artisans in multiplayer games. The only downside i cant think of is that you wont get to see what your friends artisans look like. However this will simply drive you to upgrade yours faster so you can see the improvement yourself.
If that's the case then another downside would be not having access to what other players have sold to the artisans, but ig in a game like this that is one of the least important ways obtaining loot, but is none the less somewhat limiting

That is true, but what I have found most often to be the case is that people don't sell things to vendor's that you would want anyways.
I guess they could link the items sold to vendor to display as for sale at all players' vendors. That would be very easy to do, and would not give unearned crafting potential to players while still letting them get a crack at the look that was doled out to the party that they never saw.

Bashiok - "How are the tests on feature XXX going?"
D3 Dev - "Well, our test chimpanzee was not able to understand feature XXX, but he is not a smart chimp."
Jay W - "WHAT?! Have it incinerated! Them simplify, no, REMOVE feature XXX!"
Players - "Wow that was close! I could not understand XXX feature, as I am legally retarded/in the Diablo 3 target audience!"
Yea the only downside i can think of as far as only being able to see your own drops goes, is that your friends or party members will keep having to ask each other if they want items they got but dont need.

not gonna be an issue, as people will certainly not be selling anything worth while. salvaging will be much more profitable.
I'm curious, if someone drops something on the ground does it show for everyone? It hasn't happened to me before but I would be pissed if I accidentally dropped something and someone snatched it. A small time limit could be the answer where only you can pick it up for 5-10 seconds maybe?
I believe if you drop something on the ground it shows up for everyone.
I don't see an issue. We don't need a 10 second timer. That would be annoying if I wanted to give my buddy something and we had to stand there 10 seconds or use the trade window.
The inventory is quite large and you shouldn't need to drop things anyways.
10 seconds is excessive, maybe a 2-5 second timer. I don't mean dropping stuff on purpose (which you can control where you do it) but when you accidentally click on a random item then outside the window... accidents can happen... but as long as you're careful there shouldn't be a problem. However, I often run along with my inventory open while looking at items. 2 miss-clicks and any item can be on the ground for anyone to pick up, if they're fast.
The reason why we can't see each others artisans is quite obvious;
For instance, when you roll a Barbarian.. You're not A barbarian! You're THE barbarian! The story is meant to have only one! So with artisans you will have the same. Say he is called Bobba Jay, it's not possible to have 2 Bobba Jay's in 1 game with a different looking shop.
However I really do like to see how my friends shops look like, or having bragging rights on my fully leveled one

The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t...
Friend finds good recipe for a specific gear (say, leggings). Crafts it for himself. You have leggings, you drop leggings, friend picks up leggings, creates another of these good recipe leggings, gives the worse one back to you.
Just note that in a previous interview, they said "phasing tech is nice, but we don't need it for diablo 3, so we won't be implementing it, it would actually be rather hard to do so, and time consuming". Take that however you choose.
Once I've accidentally dropped a Buriza in a pretty random game where I happened to be the only decently geared/leveled character. Some dude picked it up and was like "thx man you're great! thx 4 free I love you" etc etc, and I just couldn't even tell him that it wasn't supposed to happen I was kind of pissed of in the beginning but now I think it's funny.
Haha you're so charitable.
@Auluaden - I'm gonna guess that phasing is the term for the time limit mechanic. I guess you have to weigh it up, whether it's going to be more frustrating for players in the end or whether it's such a rare thing to happen that it won't affect the majority of players. I would probably rather Blizzard spending their time on better content but it's some food for thought.

No, Phasing was used in WoW to make an area "Evolve" as you completed quests. Phasing used to make it so that you'd be thrown in a separate area from your friends who hadn't gotten along as far, or who had gotten further along then you had. In diablo 3's case, phasing would be used for a town that grows through your quests.. etc. That said, with Diablo 3 being a story-based game, and not another WoW, phasing isn't vital for things like merchants, artisans, or cities, to show evolution and growth, since it's not a persistent world. Since Phasing won't occur, we can assume that Artisans will either be the game creator's artisan, or our personal artisans. Since the game creator's artisan would prevent us from actually being able to use our artisans or upgrade our artisans, it's pretty safe to assume that each artisan will be for each individual player, only. You will not be able to see my artisans, and I will not be able to see yours.
I don't think artisans function like vendors. They're just there to craft you things. Anything you scrap will be broken down and you won't be able to purchase it back, anyway.
Well on this picture you can see that theres shop and repair buttons in the Blacksmith UI. And I don't think you have to scrap stuff in order to sell it.
i think that was widely explained on last blizzcon just look for diablo 3 artisan videos from blizz 2010.. but i think they said that if u have caravan lvl 2 and ur buddy has one lvl 5 his caravan will be the one u will be using -im not sure tho- watch the video
Can anyone confirm this? If your party does share the highest level option... is it just the visual appearance or does it go further to share items and abilities of said vendor? It couldn't... could it?

That sounds about right ig, but I wonder then if its just purely an aesthetic thing and you can still buy items that other players have sold to them.
