How would you like to see hardcore and pvp merged?
I think the only sensible solution would be to let hardcore players choose to queue into either softcore or hardcore arena. Also player organized events is a must.
I don't think i would be able to stand going into an arena with a character i put half a year into only to get it killed by some random guy who's build/gear happens to counter mine and lose everything as consequence.
I don't think there is going to be an option for hardcore characters to actually do PvP without having the risk of losing their character permanently... Having another option really removes the core idea of hardcore. Besides PvP will as far as I know consist of team arena battles, meaning that even if one of the opponents is a counter to your build that doesn't mean the opposing team is going to kill you (since you have other people to help you out as well).
At Blizzcon the team said that there will be 1v1, although they don't expect any sort of great balance with that type of battle.
Although I never plan on playing hardcore, I wonder about this to. As of Blizzcon Jay answered a Q/W question about this, and his answer was something alone the lines of, If your character dies in the arena, that's it. Though I think it would make sense to have the option to join softcore battles.
I completely agree that there should be a sort of team management system in place for hardcore matches. Something that would let players communicate, maybe even view each others builds before committing as a team.

Hardcore PvP willbe just that, Hardcore. If you die in arena on hardcore, you will permanently lose your character. The only exceprion is they may let you res your team members if you are on the winning team.
For them to do anything else would bluntly contradict playing hardcore. If you don't want to lose your character in arena, then don't enter arena.
EDIT: It is also possible there is a practice round in arena like there was in the demo so you are not going in blind.

I think a practice round would be suitable. As said, entering a match with a 500 hours character, only to be beat because it just so happens the opposing team contracts your build perfectly to which you had no idea it did before the match would probably cause my monitor to spontaneously combust via my fist.

Yeah. There probably won't be much hardcore dueling just as there wasn't in D2. It's not meant to be something popular. Afterall, only 50% of anybody who does it fan even do it more than once on the same character. But that in itself will make that ranking that much more difficult and that much more rewarding. Imagine being on the top of that rank. You'd be a BA for sure.

I still don't see the appeal in hardcore pvp... it's just set up for abuse. With PVP being kind of sanctioned in queue-able arenas too I don't think we'll be seeing that again.

Right? Being #1 in the Hardcore devision would definitely get you mad chicks.
It is really not serious to queue for "softcore" arena.Unexpected instantly dying - that's the thrill of going Hardcore. Please Blizzard, don't ruin the game with such thing!Hardcode should be the place where the good players are, it should remain the same! I don't want 7 y/o kids to wander around unchecked(as it is in WoW).

Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.

Jay Wilson's strong stance on hardcore PvP being 1-death as well is one of the reasons I love him. Excellent approach, glad to see it. HC PvP will be insane.

Removed, and replaced with an entire arena system faceted with ranks, environment(s), achievements, 1v1 - 2v2 - 3v3 - 4v4, separate rounds, and likely more. A good choice in my eyes.

Safer from PK'ing = one small element of the myriad dangers HC characters face.
It is adorable that the big bad PKers will probably shy from HC PvP in droves. Take away their 3rd-party exploits and most of them will be too scared to actually try and PK.

My point exactly.
All thats left is arenas, this is the most thrill we will get in HC, and believe me, there will not be a lot of people dueling in HC, and you guys want to reduce it even more by allowing people to do softcore duels?

Softcore option or not (Chances are their won't be this option for HC players anyway) this wouldn't diminish the amount of people who want to HC duel. The people who want to HC duel will, softcore option or not. An the people who enjoy hardcore PvE, but not hardcore PvP at least in my eyes should have the option to bring their character into the softcore arena instead of starting a whole new character in softcore PvE, leveling, getting gear, and so on until they feel comfortable in softcore PvP.

HC PvP is going to be the most 'thrilling' duel mechanic Diablo has seen, not sure how it is seen as 'softer'. The danger actually goes up for both ends of it. Ensuring that people are allowed to decide what kind of game they want to play can only be seen as a bad thing if you're a griefer, the pleasure literally comes from ruining someone else's gaming experience. The constant reiterating of this argument has consistently shown that the community at large and the developers don't want that to be an element to the game; as you said it's a tired argument and doesn't bear any more repeating than this. The griefers were a relative minority, and they're the only ones who have a interest in allowing that mechanic to play out. The message has been explicitly clear: the 'danger' in PvE HC mode is supposed to be precisely that: PvE. I'll never understand the lament that this is being fixed.
Considering we have almost no real idea about just how dangerous HC PvE is going to be in D3, it seems a bit silly to throw it a funereal.
edit: Oh, I definitely agree 100% here with Jay Wilson, HC means HC, period. I would disagree with a softcore option here, it would remove some of the HC-ness of it. Asking someone to level/gear a SC duel character if they want to duel doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
It should always be hardcore for hardcore characters. I can imagine weekly duels. The winner from the previous week duels some new guy. Maybe there will be some legendary hero that goes undefeated for many weeks, but even the best will die eventually. People could even place bets on the winner with ingame gold.

They already pampered it so little kiddies can play pvm. Now you want to take pvp?
They removed PK's from the game (please, let's not start a discussion about it, but theres no denying that HC is much, much ''safer'' now)
Blizzard could fix it, making it more difficult for the pker, but instead they removed it.
