If I put on my Blizzard thinking cap for a minute (yes, it's made of tinfoil), this is how I'd see it:

"To us, the act of consciously un-doing a prior specialization doesn't seem very fun. It would be an annoyance, and wouldn't really serve a purpose. I don't see any reason why your blacksmith couldn't be specialized in all weapons, over time. Now, as for the cost, that's something we're looking at very closely right now.. Also, I am the one true greatest thing, and I have knowledge of all the things, and time is an abstract to be manipulated at my whim."
Whoa. Ohhh-kaay, taking the Blizzard cap off now.. no one should have that much power.. but god it felt GOOD. Ok, maybe just a little more. I'll be back later......

I agree with Polrayne. You should have the ability to make a single "artisan hub" character to avoid confusion and unnecessary busywork with transfering items between multiple characters with different artisans.

So when does the Beta start?
Sorry, I'm busy using x-ray vision at the gym right now. Two words: Yoga class. I'll tell you all about the beta SoonTM.

I think you all also miss one very important thing here. Being able to craft great stuff, especially "Twink" gear, means you can get your friends to try Diablo 3, rig them up in some great crafted gear, and get them hooked on it, without having to magic find for hours to give them stuff, and if they end up not playing, it won't really be any huge loss, either. In diablo 2, if you want to gear them up, you're going to have to farm lower-level areas for the lower-level gear for them, and hope for some luck, or lots of time. In Diablo 3, you'll just break down some lower-level crap and make exactly what you know will benefit them, thus costing you less time and effort to help out newer players. Throw in guild support, and you could very easily see Guilds that deck out their new members in crafted gear, to help them level faster, and still enjoy the gameplay, without the need for rushes or boss runs. Some probably will still boss-run, but if Blizzard is on top of things with anti-bots, then it will be far less likely, and far more effective to just craft them gear and let them level naturally. Instead of "FREES HERE" games, where people dump off extra uniques that are just hogging inventory, people will instead break them down, and craft equipment to help out their friends or guildmates. This will also hurt gold and item selling sites, because the majority of people who end up buying items, are people who are just getting into the game, and want to have an advantage that they wouldn't normally have just starting out, an advantage that can be given in this circumstance, by friends or guilds. Less people buying gold/items, means less detrimental effect to the economy, and less bots randomly joining public games, spamming item sites. Some people will, of course, still buy uniques and gold, but the number would be far, far lower. Guilds and some players might still do "FREE ITEMS HERE!" games, but they might evolve from simply dropping them on the ground (which many item/gold sites have characters with autograbber enabled on them to snatch up and resell), to actually handing full suits of gear to new players based on their class and what benefits them, thus actually assisting true newbies, while making moochers, beggars, and bots not even bother.
Ok didn't read the whole thread but can an item be enchanted more than once? Because I really hated that in Torchlight. You'd just keep upgrading an item and it discouraged using new gear.
I think you can upgrade enchantments, but its not like they'll constantly stack. It will just be that you could enchant something with '+30 Attack' and then replace it with '+50 Attack' once you get the new recipe.
Alright thanks Jackzor, it sounds good but it'll depend on how rare the recipes are and much gold it'll cost to enchant. It needs to be just right. I think TL's system has scarred me lol.
