Lvl 60 doesn't define the end of the game, so I'm sure the artisans will still be useful for a long while after hitting max level. Take for example the Mystic - she has amenities such as identifying magical items and enchanting weapons. Those things are going to be useful no matter what level you are.
And keep in mind that patched-in content and expansions will further the useful combination of gear. I strongly suspect that the Artisans will be very influential in end-game content.
Some of the crafted items may take a long time to get. So you might be trying to craft that perfect axe well after 60, since it will take high level crafting items obtained only from high level items.
Sorry but maybe you should at least do some research before making a post like this?
my dear friend, i've been following every single article on this site, every diablocast, have watched the diablo 3 panels from the last 3 blizzcon's... i just had a doubt.. so, i decided to exercise my basic right to information..
so u can enchant even legendary stuff? i think enchanting could be limited to just "white" items like imbue in d2.i think.
I remember the team confirming (I think via Twitter) that ANY item can be enchanted, rare, legendary or any other qualification of gear. I'm honestly to lazy to find the quote, but I hope my track record on remembering these things is starting to pay off a little now lol.
“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.” - Albert Einstein
they said at blizzcon 10 that the best gear will only be acquired through looting.. so, once you reach lvl 60, do the artisans become obsolete?
The end-game crafting recipes can only be acquired through looting. Or trading of course, but that requires gold, which requires looting.
Artisans also have a lot of services other than crafting
Eventually the Artisan is going to reach a point where "its good enough" for your first character (if you go with the mindset of getting that first character to the best it can be). The beauty of this is that there are other class types you will become at least partially interested in. Your Artisan will come in very handy for that.
Since there is now no BoE, you will have to farm for great loot, to salvage the materials, to thus craft great loot for your characters. Well at least I hope this is true. Then you have gems along the way to upgrade, trade, sell - then runes, more crafted gear.....
The endgame will be way more complex than D2 and will be just as fulfilling, if not more, than 1 to 60.
think you nailed it there Pol. With BOE gone, my guess is also that you can use the fully lvld artisans of your main to make items for all of your new characters, thus not much need to lvl your artisans on these 'secondairy' characters. This would be 'convinient' for players, if blizz hasnt found a way of countering this strategy!
I believe that the artisan on your main character will be able to craft items for your other characters until they too become high level. Correct me if im wrong but since you eventually specialize your artisan, doesnt that mean that if your main char is a barb and you specialize your artisan for your barb so you can craft the best gear, you will be able to craft items for your witch doctor, up until the point where you would need an artisan specialized for a WD to craft the highest level items.
Well we have no idea how long it will take to specialize in one thing.
My understanding is you can specialize in only one thing at a time. It would take a fair amount of time(One assumes) to finish a specialization before moving onto the next one. This being an endgame goal. It may be more efficient to have your witch doctor specialize as well depending on the length.

I'm pretty sure they said your artisans can specialize in multiple things simultaneously. It's pretty likely that the gold cost will go up for each specialization though. Maybe something like double the gold for each one. That way there is still incentive to level up artisans on all characters. Your main will be able to afford a few extras initially, but probably not enough for all characters until you've really been playing a long time to build up all the needed gold.
I don't know if this is how blizzard plans on doing it, but in my opinion, it would make sense for each artisan to specialize in only one things, such as axes, hence specialize. This would force you to max out your artisan for each character and drop more gold into each one (better for blizzard, sucks for us). If your main artisan can eventually specialize in everything i think it would become too easy to stack your new characters, although that may get rid of some tedious game play in the beginning. Dammit, i seem to be arguing both sides at the same time, i don't know whats going to happen.

Youth and skill will always be eventually overcome by old age and treachery.
Also keep in mind that you can only find level 5 gems on the floor and will therefore need the mystic to create higher level gems and have the Blacksmith socket the item so you can use the gems, Same goes for runes to get the highest rune you must create it as of now we don't know how they are created but apparently they are created. So really there is more than just making items. plus if durability is in the game then you'll need constant cash and a good blacksmith to ensure your weapons never become useless.

Not even Death will save you from Diablo Bunny's Cuteness!
I'm pretty sure that blizzard has changed it so they drop up to level 7 runes i think, i think i read that from a post on the main page. Also since you should be able to have somewhere close to 50 characters on one account i don't think that having one of each character with a specialized artisan will inconvenience you too much but having that many characters purely for the artisans does seem like a poor idea.

That's the dilemma I come across. Overall, I prefer being able to gear alts. I take my time on first playthrough. But once I start with alts, I usually want to move fast. So being able to stack my alts and run through to 60 fast and clean is attractive to me.
But the flipside needs serious consideration.. If it's too easy to max your artisans, then you can just basically godmode your alts and funfactor plummets. It's going to be a difficult thing to balance, but I'm sure this is getting plenty of design attention at Bliz.

"Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions."

From what I remember, you can specialize in one certain armor or weapon with your Blacksmith. If you choose to specialize in a different piece of armor or weapon later on, you start diminishing your skill in creating the previous mastered item type, and start progressing with your new item.
So you can never specialize in all the times at once, but eventually you can specialize in all of them one at a time.
I guess an answer that would help our debate is how hard is it and how long does it take to get a max specialization in one item.
It makes sense that you can spend the time and level one character's Artisan to the max level for all items, all specializations. I'm betting the farm that, that process will take FOREVER.
I'd prefer to have one character (my orginal) to have the Artisan that I max out. I would hate to have this following conversation with myself - "Okay rolled a Witch Doctor - need a good wand, hmmmmm; which of the other 20 characters I have, has the Artisan that is good with wands?"

I think they talked about that in the Q/A at Blizzcon, again I remember them mentioning this but not where..
My brain tends to cling to the facts, not the means of getting them. lol

Again, in my humble opinion.
