They will not mitigate the cost with content. Won't happen. Don't hope for it. Forget about it. DIII's only DII's size, for instance, and that's pathetic for the amount of money Blizz has. Most of the money you pay will go into Blizz's pockets and nowhere else.
DIII's MP system doesn't require the expensive servers that MMO's need.
If they sat down and actually have an open conversation on the matter than it would clear the angle on what the Diablo department's expectation for the game would settle into.
Diablo one and two are all done on one time payment deal for gamers. And the sell was always taken the game as a page turner all by itself. Expansions was even when considered, something dead on on the game package, lively arrangment between the developer and WHAT THE GAMERS WANTED was somewhere between shush or "the dev team is going for something they already had planned for; and let's not mess with the storytelling process"
A promise for annual expansion's content would definitely make what we can get out of on monthly fees clear and simple.
Not jumping for the chance on monthly taxing us because THEY NEVER DID PROMISE FREQUENT UPDATE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Give us a real picture on D3's future.
Simply state a contract for what option brings what will solve the matter. And if they state there will be monthly fees than gives themselves a deadline every year will make the idea more reliable.
I was thinking about this today. I'll probably pay a fee, and most of you won't. My fee is pretty large. Because once the girlfriend and baby move out due to lack of attention from me, it's time to pay child support :ermm:
Looking at it as 3 years of Diablo 3 = 540 is unfair. Fact is you're going to spend many times more on things you don't even think about. Go to a fast food store 3 times and you're likely to spend $10-$15.
This only applies if you spend money without first examining if it will fit in you're budget. I make under $1400 a month (after tax etc.) have $600 rent, $600 in school loans plus internet (needed for work) gas/electric bus ticket(also needed for work), and of course groceries. So my finances are really tight and unnecessary expenditures (like eating out or monthly game fees) are out of the question. For me it is perfectly fine and in fact necessary to determine.
I think this is a good point. If they would like the game as widely assessable as they say they want it, they can not charge a fee that people can not afford. I would guess a lot of people in their target are in the same boat as you.
I have a very simple policy on this; Should a monthly fee or charge be implemented, the game, to me, is dead.
Only my opinion, mind, but a steadfast one.
agreed.

A Post Concerning The Real-Money Auction House:
"Except real money trading has always been present in Diablo 2. Except now it's going to be officially supported which will reduce scams, prevent the funding of the black market so your kids will no longer be exposed to dangerous life ruining drugs like the cancer causing marijuana."
see people dont get it....its not the servers or the dlc its TIME how much time can i fit into today on D3 oo 3 hours maybe? i want to put in as many hours as the next fan boy but sometimes you just dont have it EXPL( work school kids girlfriend fun time at bars/clubs/house partys) i love diablo 3 i love games but i only have a certian amout of time i can put to video games dailey weekly and monthly....i dont want to feel like im wasting money ie not playing cause im so busy...if i want to play i want to sit chill and play not worry that i atleast need to get 2-6 hours on it today cause i paid 15 bucks for something that could be free and be less stressfull for the day...vedio games are saposed to relieve stress not add on to it...im sry i only have a lil time for video games and i dont want to worry that i cant play today or this week cause i this or that to do....NO FEES dont tell them U WOULD DO IT cause then THEY WILL....its not about that you can afford it...its that you want more money in your poket not theirs.... people amaze me sometimes when they say OO YAAA I WOULD DO THAT....15 bucks a month gets expensive espcially when u have rent food back up cable internet car gas insurance fun money ect ect ect so in the end of the day its less money for you more money to them...ya right nty...
I personally would pay $5.00 a month for Diablo 3. I spend this much in 2 days on purchasing monsters.
$10-15, still isn't that much for me, considering i've blown $150 on microtransaction games over a span of 4 months before. However, I indeed learned my lesson from that experience. When I pay for a service, or invest heavily in a microtransaction game, I feel obligated to play. This in turn pushes me to spend my free time playing the game instead of spending time with my family.
Those of you that complain about paying ANYTHING for a game need to think in realistic ... real world terms. Services rendered always cost an overhead. ALWAYS. Blizzard needs to pay tech support, the power bill, the small development team that works on fixing bugs / balance, marketing, income tax (which given the current administration will only get larger), and even human resources to take care of all employees involved in the forementioned expenses.
SC2 is not as client side as you guys may think... Battle net actually does alot of handling in order to minimalize the ability for cheats and hacks. This means that their servers actually DO take a load. How does blizzard offset these costs? They charged $59.99 for the initial release and will charge $40-59.99 for each expansion, (~ 140.00 - 180.00 over 4 - 6 years) and have an industry based on the competivive gaming surrounding SC2. They can sell advertising at tournaments and they can sell merchandise like clothing and minatures.
The pay once model works for SC2 because its supposed to be an e-sport. Blizzard can recoup there costs elsewhere.
Diablo 3 is not an e-sport, and without a nominal monthly fee, I see it heading the same direction as Dragon Age Origins, wherein, they hit you for $15, for a 2 hour DLC; or in the path of titan quest and just completely being neglected after 1 1/2 years.

No offense man, but how are you paying $600 a month in student loans but only bringing home $1400 net? WTF did you spend all your loan money on, and how much in deductions are you using?
The only reason my income gets shredded is because I'm putting 10% into my 401k, and an additional 20% on HSA/ Insurance for the wife and baby.
EDIT: And btw, you know you can file for an economic adjustment right? The loan companys will lower your monthly payments to be equal to ~15% of your disposable income. With the new financial aid changes, if you make your new minimum payments for 20 years, the rest is forgiven.
He said $600 in student loans plus internet and other things. And obviously he would spend the student loan money on school. It is pretty damn expensive to go to college after all.

Qft. Tried to say something similar earlier like this but failed.

My point is $600 is alot for student loans. That is probalby ~60,000-70,000 in loans. With an education that cost that much, he should have a better job than $1600 a month.
First you need to get hired for those jobs though. I am still looking for a job that's actually in the field of my degree.
In any case, I think it is a poor trend to incorporate monthly fees to every new game, which if you want to apply them here, it will then start entering every market over time so long as the game is online. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want to pay for every game I play beyond the cost to purchase it. That is speculation, true, but I don't think that most of these companies who are interested in making money will hold back if they can find a way to continue charging people.
There is also the many other arguments brought up by other posters
-feels like work and therefore not 'playing' anymore
-no guarantee of content
I just don't see it being justified, I don't pay a monthly fee when I want to read a book, play a board-game, throw a ball, or play any of my other video games, so why would I do so to play a new video game. I know it costs money for them to supply the service, but A. its not necessary (I can solo offline if I want) and B. The cost to them is relatively low. I plan to buy the electronic copy straight from them so they get all the profit from my transaction, When they have an expansion, I'll likely buy that too. That is a lot of money they are already getting from me and it probably costs them pennies a year (or less) to give me -as a specific individual- the online support. Also, not all services charge, like radio. There income to support this kind of endeavor should come from producing and selling quality games at a profit; which they do.
I see that I'm ranting a bit here so I will stop.

If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...

For exemple: Instead of paying for a whole month you could pay for certain number of hours online.
Each method of payment are annoying. Don't tell me I'm not the only one that just goes CRAZY knowing I'm wasting money constantly on a game.
If I pay monthly, then I feel almost obliged to play otherwise I'm wasting my money.
I guess per hour is better, but then I'd feel hesitant to play at all.
I'll never accept anything that makes me feel bad or stressed in such ways just to play a game anyway.
