It's sad that you can only validate your existence if you're 'better' than someone else at some thing or another.
On topic: they (Bash) stated somewhere in the bnet forum that, currently, the number of gems you need to reach lvl14 is huge (around the 15k mark, i believe they said).
And thats a retarded and absurd way of thinking. And I've seen plenty of people in games that just can't be satisfied or happy just because of -others-. But why the HELL should you care about them. No, you never should.
Well if you're a big PvPer I don't see how you would not care about how you compare to other players. And even in PvM you're at least going to want to team up with people of a high gear/skill level.
Think of it this way. If you play D3 and are among the first people to level 60, and you get a few really nice drops/crafted items and are relatively well geared, you would have a pretty good character. If you then stopped playing and more people got access to the same gear and eventually surpassed you, the fact of the matter is you no longer have a top-notch character if you want to start playing it again. No one is taking this to the extremes of "validating existence" and the like, but I think its a bit much to say you should NEVER care about other players. Otherwise, how would you know whether or not your character is any good? I'm not saying that you don't have the right to go through a game at your own pace and care about what you want to care about, but I don't think its at all unreasonable/astonishing that people care about how they measure up to the characters around them.
Do we even know what the recipes to upgrade gems are? As far as I know, we don't, or is there proof somewhere? Runes are at a certain point required 2 runes of the same level to upgrade to the next. Why is that, you think?
I'm just going to assume 2 of the same gems is all thats needed to upgrade to the next, and you would need 512 level 5 gems to get a level 14 gem.
That sounds a lot more believable than 19683 level 5 gems.
It was confirmed that it'll be 3 per upgrade for gems. At least it was when they answered my tweet on the subject.
I didn't hear about any additional items needed for upgrading gems. (such as runes)
It's not a way of thinking... it's part of evolution theory o.o
People just have a natural tendency to compete with eachother. Having possessions is just another front to compete on. If you can distinguish yourself from the crowd in a positive way, you have more chances to reproduce. Now ofcourse this doesn't really work out in video games xD, but it's most definitely the case in real life.
So in real life it's our instinct to compete on these fronts... What's so wrong with doing that ingame too? o.o You may say you don't like this "way of thinking" but really... it's only natural, and nothing "evil" about it.

Well of course if you're talking about PvP you have a reason to take about what they have, because you'll be fighting them.
This isn't about finding someone appropriate with the right gear. Its about the mentality that you need to compare yourself to others to be satisfied about yourself.

Well, yes, it is "evil". I don't excuse things like that just because they are "human", too many "human" things are wrong. The only competition that ever matters is the one against yourself. One should compete to become better for themselves and not to be better than someone else.
Its like judging your happiness of having said swimming pool above by your neighbors not having one! How insane is that? Isn't the only thing that matters is: I wanted to have a swimming pool. I got one! I'm happy! My neighbor got one after or before me? Good for him! If you'd be unsatisfied just because HE got a swimming pool, well thats exactly the kind of things thats wrong with "humans".
Well I think we'll all be satisfied with our characters no matter what, but it is satisfying (for some at least) to know you're beating that other guy. I wouldn't say that anyone here is saying that its the only way they gain satisfaction from the game (although I'm sure there are people with that point of view), so I don't think you can say that its a completely ridiculous point of view, even if you don't agree with it (talking about just gaining some, not all, of your satisfaction through having better gear than others).
We don't know what Blizzard will do, but the whole gem upgrade thing I consider a serious design failure.
The only practical effect is that it inundates high level player's inventories with crap items that they are hoping to collect enough to upgrade. If you want players to have more high level gems, just make them drop more often, and give them the peace of mind that they can trash/sell the otherwise useless low level stuff.
First of all, I'm an evolutionary geneticist, so don't give me "it's evolutionary theory". It's not.
And you know what's also 'only natural'? Killing.
And it is evil. If you want the people around you to not have stuff they want, yes, it's evil.
Calm down, it's just a discussion.
Now on the quote, you don't have to be an evolutionary geneticist for the theory to apply, as you don't need to be a physicist for gravity to apply (i wish it wasn't so i so wanna fly - without smoking anything).
Anyway, what i understand is that you see Pride and Envy as evil things. Some people (me included) think it's only natural. If i spend who knows how much time to get an item, i pretty much want it to be hard for everyone to get. Same way with achievements etc.
In games, gear is one way to show off. Everyone likes to do it when they get the chance (hell, i did it with a rare mount on WoW a couple months ago).
Is it evil? In my opinion it's not. But again, Envy and Pride were two of the seven deadly sins. Well, i'm not too fond of religion so i guess i'll rot in Hell anyway
Tehe, and I'm a psychologist =P but I don't see that having any bearing on this discussion. ~_~
Do you guys consider yourself insanely rich? No? o.O Then go tell that to a starving orphan in Africa.
Is it unnatural to not consider yourself insanely rich then? No it's not... it's simply a limitation in human thinking. We always, at all times compare ourselves to the people around us.
And please don't tell me an evolutionary geneticist claims the males of any species don't compete with eachother over females, it makes me a sad panda.
All in all I'd appreciate it if we'd keep the swearing down. It is after all a discussion, and all I'm doing is showing and argumenting my view.
To drag it back to the gems, if you argue your personal wealth is in no way related to other's wealth, why does it matter you may not get the final ranked gem? ;o
Also I'd prefer blizzard to make a game that plays into what people like, instead of what people should like ^^
It's the principle of the thing. You not wanting other people to have the things they want just so you can feel special is the wrong way of looking at things, in my opinion.
But enough off topic.
It's right on topic though... =)
Things aren't as black and white as you seem to think. I would never ever say I don't want others to have the same things as me... I'd just like them having to put in the same efford as I did ^^

Well from my point of view, its not that I don't want other people to have things, its that I want to have better things than them, or at least the majority of them. In video games, that is.
It's 19k-som.

No big deal guys, it's a game. And a damn good one for people that are crazy about treasure.
I'm gonna pick up stuff when I'm in. That's right, pick up stuff! Garrr!
