So the devs have said that nightmare/hell are going to be hard. But did they give out any concrete information on exactly why? Of course the monsters will have more HP/dmg, but did they say anything about their being more of them, or having new abilities, or better AI?
To clarify about better AI, in one of the blizzcon presentations (think it was Crafting Sanctuary) the AI guy talked about how the monsters don't attack in the utmost effective manner. Their pathing is less than 100% efficient. They have swing delays, and other movement delays, to make the game more fun. But would they reduce those delays and increase pathing efficiency in NM/Hell, making the monsters 'smarter'?
Well, I don't think they said anything. So if you're looking for any sort of official information, this topic is probably over already. So I'll go on with my opinion.
Better AI in general is not a bad idea. This coupled with new abilities help in making the same encounters on different difficulties very different.
D2 had a few change in abilities, but too few, and most meant little. I definitively want there to be a difference beyond "HP and damage".
Because lets just say it. Boosting stats for the next difficulty level is the base, its extremely easy, it requires no work, and its not special, different or particularly fun.
Having more monsters in some case could be a good touch, too. But I don't know what to truly expect. If it ends up like D2, chances are I'll always stop playing soon after Normal. I need an incentive to play the other difficulty levels beyond "bigger numbers".

I take it you played single player? The good loot was the incentive dude

They said that the monsters wouldnt be reused the same way as d2. they said it would be one long stream of monsters and that, for example, you wouldnt find really powerful fallen in act one hell. so think of it like this: act 1 fallen|act 1Nightmare hulky fallen with faceraping wepns|act 1Hell ghost-fallen with spell-o-ownage.

Probably a mixture of more health, different abilities, and the more dangerous affixes (ie Health Link or Molten Teleporter) show up more often.
Health Link or Molten Teleporter <<< are those new monster mods? health link is i presume you hurt it, it hurts you or the unique shares damage taken with its pack? molten teleporter..... causes fire damage when it teleports?

I'd like you or anyone else to find the source for this. I want to believe you, but I don't remember this.

some explanation would be nice~ if you would
We have some of these explained in our wiki, for example: http://www.diablowiki.com/Molten. Linked basically means all the monsters in the pack share health, therefore any damage gets "split" amongst them. Molten is kind of like the new "Fire Enchanted" where mobs can spawn pools of lava underneath the player's feet. Teleporting behaves a little differently in D3 from what I've noticed in the videos - if the monster is ranged it uses it to create distance; if the monster is melee it uses it to close distance to the player. Obviously this gives the opposite range type a much harder time.

I think I remember that quote, but I read it more to the effect that it'll be one continuous stream during one playthrough. Like you wont see Fallen and then Carvers later on. But once you get to Nightmare you'll probably go through the same monsters again. Just more champion packs and stuff. I don't think the entire thing changes from difficulty to difficulty. You'll still see Fallen in Nightmare, although it did say that there are at least 2 other types of Fallen.

I do remember something like this being said a while back. But I think they said that basically there would be monsters in Hell difficulty that you won't encounter in normal, for example, but you would still see monsters from previous difficulties only stronger. Although like I said, its been awhile so I'm not 100% sure my memory is correct.

Yeah exactly, though taking it to such an extreme might be pretty prejudiced vs. the ranged characters.
Oh nice, good to hear.
