I am a big Diablo fan and i have been waiting for Diablo 3 all my life. I think it would be one of that game that will leave a mark in my life forever. I have a motivated friend with me who just finished diablo 2 about 6 months ago . Just a single run viewing cinematics and all. Today he asked me a question which i did answer to a extend but i still need a detailed query from your side since this forum is dedicated for diablo.
The Query :
Lets go back to the days of diablo II. People used to end Diablo 2 and then just made a re run for better items and gear in a hard level. But now is the age of WOW. Where new content every month or every 3 months have spoiled people. No one wants to just hack and slash monster for better gear rather people wants new content in shape of dungeons and areas. new items etc.
I know that Diablo 3 is not a MMO. BUt what would be the length of diablo 3 like ? and what will be way to do it.
For example what i want is that say there are 100 lvs and say 80 instances or dungeons. Now how i want diablo 3 to play is that the first time we finish the game then a player should just reach lv 10 and should get like 10 talents points . There should be 100 talent points also and a 100 point talent tree. now people just should have access to 20 dungeons out of 100 in there first run. after you finish your first run then you get access to 15 more dungeons and better gear . After you finish the game in hardcore then you get access to 20 more instances and better gear in say Ultra Hardcore. All in a all a Nightmare lv should be saved for the end . In the Nightmare fight against diablo peopel should see a diablo end game content they never did see in any of the other difficulties where diablo takes its true form and that should like a hidden phase just for the Night mare players to experince and after that you get acess to the last 20 instance which were always locked.
This way people will really keep on playing diablo 3 and want to experience that last battle where diablo shows its true form at nightmare level and they also want the last 20 instance unlocked and to finish that nightmare lv one needs to get to reach lv 90 + and doing that should require u atleast 2 or 3 years. that way people will play this game a lot longer and the lenght concern will be gone too.
My question is that is diablo 3 like that ? if not how is it . What will make people play diablo III for 2-4 years. Or is the game just designed for a 1 -3 month cycle like other ordinary games ???
My friend claims that it would be a very short game where you end the game in 15 days and u are done with the cinematics and all and you can just play it again for better gear but he says those days are gone where people used to do that . Now he says no one plays a game again just for that. People need better incentives.
Like you said, diablo is not an MMO, so content-wise I think we'll definitely be looking at some form of limitation.
If the present content will make the game last 15 days for person A, a little more will give the same person maybe another 15 days of fun and that's it.
So just looking at expanding the content won't make the game 'last'.
So I guess we need to look at what made diablo popular. Multiplayer, item hoarding and PvP are where the 'lasting' fun was at and probably will be at when D3 comes out.
What you need to remind yourself is that 10 years after its release, D2 is still being played...along with D1.
For that category of players already introduced to the diablo universe, D3 in my opinion will have a similar spell too.
To new players, the issues you have raised do seem legit, but realize that you'll get 5 classes in the original game release and probably half a dozen possible solid builds for each class.
Then comes the items themselves- a major part of diablo and having the ability to completely change your play style and pace you will be playing the game. Between those two you'll have many many weeks of fun.
Add some randomized side quests to the cooking and you'll get yourself a great meal.
so there is no way this game can last 2-3 years in a very fun based atmostphere like Warcraft 3 and WOW lasted easily.
If you cannot see the difference between diablo and warcraft, then nobody can help you.
We could compare the diablo games with first person shooters if you want. It will be more fun.
Can you guys elaborate more on the games length. Since me and my friend we dont really try out new classes or multiple characters. we just stick to one from start to end. even in Wow i just have 1 character since 4 years.

Then maybe diablo is not the kind of game for you and your friend.
Diablo, unlike WoW, is a "introspective" game. This mean that the very core of the game is your character, not the world around your character. In other words, building character is the number one and the core feature of diablo (both by looking for items and by creating skill combinations). This is the reason why people keeps playing the same 5 dungeons in the last 10 years: the dungeon doesn't matter as long as you are playing with different characters.
I dunno how many hours of D2 i've played but it's huge amount. I've builded more then 40 different characters, most of then are lvl.80+, a few are 90+ and 3 are 99. And after all this time, all this characters, now and then i still come up with something new to play.
I"m not saying that diversity in maps and dungeons is not important. But they are not so important as diversity of characters. This is diablo phylosophy.
have to agree with above poster ... game is 10 years old, and after countless runs, builds, and so on ... everyone still keeps coming back and still find new things to do.
Would it be nice to have expansions and new stuff ? Most certainly. Will it be necessary for the longevity of the game ? Maybe not, but we'll see ....
While I approve of what everyone else was saying I don't think anyone answered your actual question. Sounds like you want to know how long the single player game will last. Completing the story and seeing the cinematics - Blizz has said that they are aiming for a comparable length to Diablo II on multiple occasions so it's pretty safe to say it's going to be about the same.

You must find the courage to step through this gate...
I stopped reading at some point, so if i repeat, sorry
to me, WoW is kind of boring and a bit repetitive (I'm sure it'll keep me occupied if i really got into it), and i've never really gotten into it, but its because it doesn't attract me, and the monthly fee doesn't help..
you're friend reminds me of my friend, he'd play d2, start a sorc, and level her to level 15 in 3 days and get bored. He'd then start every other character and once he hits the harder bump at 15, he'd get bored.
first of all, if you've actually ever played diablo II and without rushing, there is no way on this fricken earth, that you'd finish the game in 15 days. (i mean, if you played 24/7, maybe)
but to beat normal mode on your own or even with friends starting from scratch takes time...
if you spent one month on each character, and you didn't even go that INTO it..thats a MINIMUM of 5 months of play time.
Then theres item hunting, PVP, hardcore mode to try, and leveling up your character.
the great part about diablo is that finishing the game and leveling up isn't the main concern. The main concern is items..
all i've spoken about is diablo II so far, and diablo III is fixing all the problems in d2, and adding much much more.
personally, if he likes wow so much, he should go play it, but D3 will be a way better game.

"Not Even Death Can Save You From Me" ~ Diablo (II)
Replayability doesn't have to come from adding new content, it can be done through using the already existing content in new ways.
WoW is about the world, there is only one world so it must be updated in some way to keep it fresh.
Diablo is about the character, there are many character builds so no updates are necessary.
That is the difference.

Those are some of the most interesting posts I've read in a long time. I'd never really thought of the game like that before, but reading over what you two have posted and examining what kept me and my friends going for so long, I have to say that you two hit the nail on the head.
