I posted something about this almost a year ago, but I feel like reviving this..
In duels, you should be able to make a wager. When we hostile each other, before we accept, it can say "make a wager".
I'd offer my armor and 5000 gold, and he'd offer...10,000 gold.
the gold gets thrown into a pool, and the "game" holds it. the armors on the other hand, if you wear it, you can continue using it for the duel. If you don't wear it, then it gets held by the game.
If i'd lose, and i bet the armor i'm wearing, the game would take it and give it to the winner immediately after death.
If someone would leave the game in mid duel, (without some sort of resignation thats agreed on by the other guy), then its an automatic loss.
maybe on top of losing the wager, gold also falls on the floor from a regular death.
This would be so much fun to add to dueling, and it would take it up a few notches..
In hardcore, you should obviously win all of his gear..

A strong internet is required for this one. There should be a one minute timer for you to come back online if you've been disconnected for any reason.
yea, thats a valid point... the reason i added the thing about resignation, is because if i'm in the middle of a game, and i suddenly have to go...(i would lose everything)..
but whats worse is if your internet drops for a few seconds. maybe if they add a 30 second timer to check if his computer pings back. (no one wants to wait for 5 mins like in other games)..

I dont think it would be too hard to implement that if you get disconnected the items return to you,
so someone is desperate and unplugs their internet to be a cheapass, nothing you can do about it, but still a good idea
Pretty cool idea. Would suck if you'd get disconnected tho.. but still I like it, would be a totally different way to get rich other than farming for gold.

This body holding me, reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment. Remember... We are eternal, all this pain is an illusion.
Don´t get why people still care much for disconnecting. Internet improved a lot the past years, even my wireless barely disconnects unless my ISP just fucks up at HQ.
Having 10mbits dl and 0.5 up speed which is about the minimum we can get in our small city.
But not much has changed about short circuits cutting the power to your house, and even thunderstorms. Also, my wireless connection can be cut simply if anything were to obstruct that connection like a large metal dish (I'm thinking this freaking metal lamp I have that falls and gets right in the way).
So no, not too much has changed and dc'ing is still an issue. Albeit, not as bad as every incoming phone call cutting your dial-up net.
But even so I like this idea and if anyone were to lose their gear because of a connection loss well that's their own problem. This would avoid anyone purposely unplugging their net to save their items the cheap way.
How about not playing betting duels during a thunderstorm ?
If you see any sign of failing net, don't take this kind of risk. It's like hardcore, but hardcore is even worse cause you don't loose some gold and items, you loose lots of gold, items and a character.
I'm hoping for this system. The idea of getting/loosing tons of stuff in pvp is very sweet.

trust me, it would happen a lot more than you think..
If someone has that ability, they'd use it. Some people have a "lag"switch, or whatever its called, and it turns their internet on and off..
I never had the best internet, and I was barely kicked out of the game, so i'd say theres not many excuses now-a-days...

I live in florida, and i've been cut out plenty during thunder storms, but I have to say that it isn't my problem if you get cut out during an important match...
I'll most likely be the victom AT some point, but it doesn't happen so often that this be an argument... seriously..
thats like saying that you'll disconnect all your electronics from the wall socket because lightning MIGHT short circuit your sockets.
Or that you won't buy a phone because of the CHANCE it has no reception and you're in deep "sh!t"

So I fail to realise why it's so crappy at your place. =]
Me too. But mine by far isn't the worst. I play online and I've seen so many players lag out that, in itself isn't a problem because they can log back in less than a minute, but during crucial moments in the game it's really frustrating.
How about not playing betting duels during a thunderstorm ?
Thunderstorms can often start with a big bang which cuts the power to half a city. And this isn't the point anyway, I'm just saying that more than half the world is likely to have an internet that can be cut at any moment by various reasons - and although not often, it DOES happen.
thats like saying that you'll disconnect all your electronics from the wall socket because lightning MIGHT short circuit your sockets.
I never said I wouldn't gamble because of the small chance I'd lose my connection, just that it can be deeply frustrating if it does happen. Much like how everyone takes the risk with their electronics being fried, but if it does happen...
Or that you won't buy a phone because of the CHANCE it has no reception and you're in deep "sh!t"
It depends on where you are or what you're doing. I wouldn't care so much if I lost reception while at the store or something, but if I were out in the wilderness on a trek, then yes I wouldn't be relying on just a phone because of the risk it MAY pose. This can be a kind of extreme example to comparing softcore and hardcore play. And this is a good reason why many don't play hardcore!
more people would abuse this ability to disconnect with a lag switch(or just disconnect)and retain your items, rather than use this to their advantage because of lag...

i didn't care for it that much in DII because people never play fair :P, but i think i'll like it in DIII
