Ok, so I've been kinda thinking about how D3 (Diablo 3) and SC2 (Star Craft 2) will take up my time.
I'll ask all of you what Im asking myself.
Will I play D3 more? Or SC2 more?
They are both badass games, both made by Blizzard.
I know your thinking at first "D3 of course!" but there has been a time when you played StarCraft (If you havent, go play it) and you enjoyed it. D2 had a lot more replay-ability than StarCraft...
But the new Starcraft2 is as graphically sexy as Diablo3 and has a lot more playability than StarCraft.
So if you've played both Diablo2 and StarCraft, will you buy both D3 and SC2?
And if so, which one will you 'think' you will play more? (Based on youtube videos)
Since this is a Diablo fanbase, I am aware that most of you will say D3.
I myself think that D3 will be played more than SC2, but this question is based on you, how much of them will you play.
Like I said earlier, if you haven't played StarCraft1 then you should before making your decisions.
Both the Diablo and StarCraft franchises are fun
But I must say after some serious thought ( ) I will most likely play Diablo3 more than SC2.

Diablo 3 of course. Although, SC had a LOT more replayability with custom maps than D2. Now if you're talking strictly the basic games, then yes D2 had more replayability for someone who doesn't want to climb up the ranked ladders.
I'll play more D3 because i like rpgs/mmos more then rts. But Sc2 is a very good game, the galaxy editor are one of the greatest features i've ever saw in a game and i'm sure the singleplayer will kick ass.
It's hard to tell which one will be more popular. SC2 has SC's name, and SC franchise are more popular then Diablo franchise. In other hand SC2 are a hardcore game while D3 are made to please a more casual and popular crowd.
I guess that depends on how SC2 custom games turns out.
We already have (very gimmicky) third person shooters and Tetris games done in the Beta.
The thing is more limitless than the previous Blizzard editors, and they were already limitless.
And I don't have any doubt whatsoever that SC2 will be played more than D3, there is no competition, and D3 does not even bring any mod support whatsoever, which I have to say is very sad.
I've always had a hard time deciding between SC and Diablo. i tend to go for Diablo first, but after getting to a high level and good gear i get bored and try SC for a while. Then SC takes over for a few months, and my Diablo characters expire
Although i must say, i got a beta key less then a week ago, and I've played almost 150 games of SC2
And once there's a common good map like SC1's Fastest Possible, and Zero Clutter, and UMS games set up its gonna take a lot to get people to switch between games. (not to say people wont buy both)
Diablo 2 is still outselling Starcraft, and even hit the top 10 charts again when D3 was announced, despite it's absurd age. Both will sell ridiculously well and be great games in their genres, but looking at D2 it seems D3 should win the longer war. I suspect this is partly due to no serious long-term competition in Diablo's realm, while there have been a number of decent RTSes.
I think SC2 because I enjoy RTSes more than RPG's. Plus, I can't afford that many games at a time, so SC2 till D3 comes out, but I don't think I'll ever play D3 hardcore lol

As far as i kno D2 has sold around 4,5 millions, while SC sold 10 millions.
According to Wikipedia, the Diablo franchise have sold over 18.5 million copies (2008).
According to the same source, StarCraft have sold 11 million copies (2009).
However those numbers can be decieving. Take in mind that the Diablo numbers are for a franchise, meaning Diablo, Hellfire, Diablo 2 and LoD. 2 games + 2 expansions in total. The StarCraft numbers is for one game + its 3 expansions.
The link above gives you a list, but there are some tricky parts there as well. StarCraft has the same 11 million copies, with 3 expansions, but Diablo 2's expansions are not included in its calculation, resulting in 4 million copies. According to Wikipedia's page about Diablo (1), it sold 2.5 million copies as of 2001. Let's be fair and say that a million more bought it after -01 (and expansion). That gives us this calculation:
Total = 18.5 mil
Diablo 1 = 3.5 mil
Diablo 2 = 4 mil
LoD = 18.5 - (3.5 + 4) = 11 mil
These are not exact or reliable numbers, but I believe that the total sales of D2 + expansions can roughly match StarCraft + expansions. The question is how the hell this makes sense. 11 million copies of the expansion but only 4 million of the core game. Either the numbers are waaay off or someone have to explain to me how this is possible. It can't all be bots and scratched/lost CD's... right?
I've just discovered that 4 milllions are the selling of D2 in 2001. The number is problably higher, to a point were Diablo 2 + LoD has sold around 15 millions.
Imo, to see wich game is more popular, we shouldn't count the classic AND the expansion, since everyone that bought Lod also bought at least the classic, so we would fall in the error of counting many people two times. Acording to the wiki, SC alone sold 11 millions, wich express a bigger popularity.
Imo Sc are one of the most sucefull game sof all times. There are TV channels and live streams that shows profesionals playing SC. SC is the second most well succeded e-sport as far as i know, wich makes him extremely popular.
Also the SC was allways imensaly active during all those years, even after WC3 comes out, unlike Diablo were most of it's fanbase moved to other games (Gw, WoW, etc...).

No, not SC alone, SC + its expansions according to the wiki.
"The ten best-selling PC games. Please note that the sales figures for expansion packs are not used in calculation of the sales figure for the original game (with the exception ofStarCraftandGuild Wars). ... StarCraft (11 million)" If StarCraft get to count its expansions, D2 should as well.
I though Sc has sold 11 mil w/o broodwar. I'll try to find out how many copies those games sold alone.
Starcraft II until Diablo III is released. After that, Starcraft what?

Well with Starcraft the expansion is the game. Without the expansion you're buying half the experience, and it goes the same for Diablo 2 (even though the expansion was a rush-job due to the immense success of D2), so yeh, you have to count the expansions in their sale figures.
Though really on battle.net all you need is the original starcraft cd-key and they give you broodwar free of charge, so that is also a factor. No one in their right mind would be starcraft original without the expansion.
I think the same of D2, but maybe not

Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.
I'll ask all of you what Im asking myself.
