First off I would like to say hello to everyone at Diablo fans! (1st post)
The hot-bar kinda worries me some, the reasons are as followed.
1) I can understand hot-bars in game where you have a fixed target as you can easily use the hot-bar with this type of targeting system. But with a point n click the hot-bar is gonna lean towards being a buff-bar i think for alot of players. (Me being 1 of said players)
2)Now in D2 (I do understand this isnt a graphic updated D2) you could assign your skills to the f1-f8 keys and then use the scroll wheel on your mouse to change skills I for 1 loved the ability to do this and I am concerned about this changing.
In the 1st game play video we saw that you only had 2 active skills for your mouse clicks this is what I am really worried about, as I said before with a point n click game this is gonna limit your ability to change skills quickly unless your capable of pointing and using the hot-bar at the same time very quickly.
So I would just like to see if anyone shares in my concerns on this matter.
I was actually considering how the hot-bar would work in Diablo 3. Would it cast the spell whenever your mouse cursor was currently positioned? Would you have to select the spell, and then click it? Blizzard has insisted that the game is playable with just a mouse- but I wonder how limited that will be?
Somehow I imagine it will function much like Diablo 2 does: but now, the hot-bar lets us use a greater variety of skills, allowing for interesting combos and strategies.
Huck just so you know bud I am not flaming but how does the hot-bar allow u to use more skills? As of the opening video you could only have 2 active skills on your mouse right? That means you have to stop (break from the action,be clear of enemies.etc) to change active skills. Now the hot-bar is a great tool for buffs thats a given but active skills in a point n click game? Lets say your using Cleave n whirlwind as your 2 primary attacks on your mouse that means if u wanna use Ground Stomp with them you have to be pointing at the area you wanna ground stomp and use a 1-8 key at the same time I think this is gonna be a difficult task when you are being rushes by hords os mobs.
In D2 this could be handled with a simple scroll of the mouse wheel now I understand this may not be a problem for some but I am damn near 40 years old lol and I liked the older system better than this 2 active skill hat-bar mix just a personal like maybe but still I am concerned about this hot-bar comeing to a hack n slash game that I love so much.
I really hope Blizzard has thought this through as imo this isnt a good system for this game.
With the skill hotbar, there is the possibility of having 8 different skills available with a single click. Now, as far as the functionality of it goes, these skills do not have to be passive buff skills. When you activate a skill, it is aimed wherever your mouse cursor is aimed. When selecting 1-5, it acts as if you have just clicked your mouse button. While I have unfortunately never played the demo myself, I have read numerous reviews that the skill hotbar functions very well and you get accustomed to it in minuets. Your left hand's only job will be pressing these buttons and maybe alt to see items (if they don' include an always highlight option). Just as easy as it was to spam potions, it will be that easy to spam spells.

Torchlight did let you scroll your abilities with the mouse wheel and bind them so you can change the skills on your mouse on the push of a button, all that with the actual hot bar.
Its not like everything was shown to us about D3, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't close to that. It would be pretty stupid design if they just didn't include the old ways of switching skills.
My only concern is the pathetically small amount of hotkeys. 4-5 + Mouse? What? Torchlight had 10 and that was barely enough. I understand that technically you shouldn't be actively using 10 skills, but that doesn't mean you will never have 10 and want them all there.
All you can do is wait till the game is announced. And if it has a crappy system THEN you and other people can complain about it on the official bnet forum.
Thats the perfect way to get no result out of your complaints. If you think they are useless now, they are far more useless once the game is released.

This.
Really... I usually play binding 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Q, W, E, R.
I hate when developers limit players choices for some lame reason. If i want to play with one point in each skill i should be able to (even if i'm weak, i should at least has the interface to try those kind of for fun challenges).
For mouse you have what 2 skills, and with wheel you can scroll and switch with some other skills?
Then you also have like 6 hotbar skills, idk feels a bit small, maybe it was an early build, maybe the will add more.
They took a page out of Titan Quest/Torchlight's book. They had a hotbar with 2 mouse button skills with a 3rd slot that you could swap to your right mouse button(so 3 skills total on the mouse).
