I dont mean, OMG its floating? Go-GO Barbarian LEAP!
In all seriousness, do you think we will be having floating waypoints?
And what I mean is this: Blizzard has revelaed there will constantly be chunks and pieces taken away and replaced by different things, even SOME sections BUG ENOUGH TO COMPLETELY RESULT IN EVER-DIFFERENT SIDE-QUESTS!
This being the case, say you ran into one of those larger chunks that changes to allow a pretty decently sized side-quest come your way. Well since waypoints are supposed to be so more frequent to avoid TP need, will there be Waypoints in the areas that are ever-changing?
We say YES because if it was anything to the contrary, we would need those TPs that have been discontinued. We would need the way to go to town and where we need to for that, otherwise, honestly we would be screwed. And if were having a checkpoint system, that keeps us in the area with checkpoints linked there, why cant we have Waypoints linked there to bring us to town and around. Now think of D2. Everytime we left a game in D2, our maps dissappeared. YES we kept our waypoints, but the maps reset. Well tell me then why we cant have WPs that last the duration of the game for these Floating Areas?
We say NO because, what would happen when you try to return there? That section changes everygame for an endless(per-say) array of randomness and entertainment inside the game. No, because you cant go to a place that isnt there anymore. You cant say maybe, like "What if those waypointss are inactive unless that plot of land and quest comes by again?" No. Because blizzard wants MASSIVE customization to keep Diablo III Running longer than D2 ever could hope to be.
So we say YES, and we say NO. What do you think? Discuss.

No, i mean couldnt it be a possibility that JUST the waypoints for the parts of the maps that change every game, would last game only. So if you get a random generated section of map, the waypoint for that section lasts for the whole SPECIFIC GAME, then when everyone leaves it and it expires, you dont have that one waypoint anymore because it wont be the sameplace next game, itll be a different random map

I don't think so. The areas that change are always the same area. Therefore, they can just put in a waypoint right before this area. The interface that we use to select waypoints would be way too difficult if the waypoints keep changing. The areas that change can be big enough to change gameplay but I think it will be what is inside the area that changes it. I don't think whole areas of the map will change.

Are you talking about waypoints for random quests that may not show up all the time.
I think they will not since that would be wasting resources that could be used elsewhere. I think the Side Quests are going to be real short and likely to kill so and so monster and things like that. There may be a special area for some side quests but again I think they will make it like the caves in Act 1 D2.

If that image i made works, heres what im talking about. Say the BIG square is the size of a huge area, say an equivelent of 2-3 cold Plains. Blazzard has stated MORE FREQUENT WPs, so lets say for arguments hope that that means 2 WPs PER an area the size of ONE Cold Plains. That means for the above area of 2-3 the size of coldplains there should be 4-6 waypoints, this is a huge area were talking about.
Were saying the * marks a regular waypoint, and the small square within the square, is the section of map that changes every new game. Thats about the size of 1/2-3/4 of the cold plains meaning that there should be atleast 1 waypoint in that area for that side-quest, BUT THE LAND CHANGES every time.
So yes, I get what you mean about the waypoint staying and your just entering a land you never seen before each new game, but that isnt the point of waypoints, its where u HAVE been before. Not havent. So wouldnt it be easy to say that waypoint 3 just dissappears when you exit the game untill you find it in the next random area inside the box? All it is is basicscally a temporary(floating) waypoint.
-----------------------------------------------------
*^&@*^ nvm it doesnt save the image, thats BS. Maybe ill design a map and post it later, ignore this post if you dont understand it, it fkd my map.

I do not think they will add more way points per area such as Cold Plains. I think they plan on making it so that the way points are going to be easier to find and likely each major area will have one and some of the minor areas may have one. It will be difficult to tell which way point you want to use if there is more than one for the area.

I haven't seen anything that says the waypoints will be more frequent. As for the floating ones, you have to think of the repercussions this would cause. I don't think that they will be putting any in any area that can change. The changing areas are meant to only mix things up within the static map. I don't think any will be large enough to need a temporary (this word makes more sense then floating) waypoint. They can just put a waypoint right in front of the area that changes to eliminate any need for this confusing idea.

the word floating comes form meaining there would be a waypoint in the area, but not same spot because it was randomized. Like floating ribs... there there but arent connected to one spot.
I dont see reprocussions, i think it wouldnt be so difficult, it would be like an on/off switch. turning on a temporary WP just sets it to turn off when you leave the game, its as easy as doing away with the current map when you leave. Just a waypoint that changes pending on quest randomizing.
And what i was saying about just puting a real WP before the randomized area, is that its random. it could be bigger, smaller, longer, the shape cxould change id believe. what ifd you just gegt one of th larger randomized areas and its longer distance than how reg. WPs are placed. idk.. maybe it was just a "floating thought" lol.
and yes, they said to ballance the lack of town portals, Way Points would be more frequent for players. Like i said, if we havbe no portals to emergency heal when we cant fight for health orbs, or when our packs are full and we just need everything we have AND the item on the ground, they NEED to be more frequent if we completly lose TP

If you are talking about how it is done for the most part in D2 with the location of the WP in the map. It likely will be randomly chosen where it is going to be unless it is determined that the WP be located at a fixed location.
[edit]
If they make the WPs to common than what was the point of removing town portals.

1. I understand the word but other people are getting confused by it.
2. The distance can't change. The areas that change are already mapped out to a certain location. Whether area (X) has a zombie, boss or small quest, area (X) remains the same size.
3. The repercussions are
a. What do you do to the waypoint interface? Does it just show up without a specific name or does it change name based off its current location.
B. It would be very disorienting when portaling to an area that has changed. Where do I go from here?
4. They have said a waypoint would exist around every 5 dungeon levels (perspectively) while checkpoints are every level. This would be about the same as D2. They don't need more because pots are not as important. They are still discussing other ways to regain health with pots.

No I dont think its going to be anything like that. Im sure they will have it before the changed area or however there going to set that up.

A. True, one aspect I missed.
B. You wouldnt portal to an area you didnt know, because youd FIND it, knowing where you are, and in the next game, its gone untill you find the replacement. Erasing the "TEMPORARY" ones each new game stops from bolting into an unfamiliar area.
And if the size doesnt change, then your actually right. I assumed the size could be random aswell.
And Hans, that IS the point. They basically want to turn WPs into TPs by making them frequent. They think they remove TPs, and supplement WPs. It IS the idea. We dont know why they dont want TPs, but there frequenting WPs.
And Scyber again, where did they say that? around 5 dungeon levels, did I just miss that, because that doesnt sound famillar at all. They said they WANTED frequent(er) WPs because they wanted to remove TPs, the supplement is the NEED of more frequent wp

It's what I heard too ! and it's perfect for me !
I don't know why we argue about that !! it's obvious, random parts won't have waypoint. It's appear rarely so play it from the start !! we don't need wp to skip a part of it ! Random parts will definitively not be important in the main flow of the game, I think wp will follow the main story.
I'll try to find the quote but yes, Jay Wilson did say in an interview the frequency of waypoints and checkpoints. They have also never said that waypoints are to replace TP's. They removed TP's because it broke you away form the action and made the game to easy (again, I'll try to find the quote). Health orbs are the number one way they are using to eliminate TP's. The two main reasons to go to town were health pots and durability. Health globes removed the necessity for pots and they have removed durability from the game. Waypoints will not replace TP's because there is no longer a need for them. Waypoints will remain the same as in D2 as said in the announcement of them.

i said on another thread that waypoints should be more frequent because if there to far apart thats just skipping more of the game And they should give you a checkpoint right when you teleport to a waypoint so if you die you return to that waypoint but ofc still have both the waypoint system and the checkpoint system
and yes they said at blizzcon also that they wanted to make TP's in Diablo 2 a good tool to get to town fast and sell items but instead it became a get away tool so that's why they took it out and put in checkpoints
WAIT NO DURABILITY!?!?!?! HELL YES!!! Now my barb can ww without my maul breaking all the time..
