im looking at the 4 announced ones and out of those 4, I would only choose sorc and barb. I think they should have come out with 8 right away then add 3 or 4 more in an expansion, cmon dude!!
Plus, they were looking for achetypes. And you can't have many of those without them overlapping. In my opinion 1 more would be acceptable
Brute meleer = Barbarian
Glass Cannon = Wizard
Summoner (+ Dark) = Witch Doctor
Light/Fast Meleer (+ Holy) = Monk
Ranged Damage = Rogue/whatever its name
I think the shapeshifting is missing, unless they add it in the 5th class. If it were for me 6 would be enough. But of course, they are saving room for the expansion. I can't think of any other archetypical class that doesn't overlap with those
wonder if the next gen diablo will have a more unique skill tree of a sort ( not actual skill tree, but thats wat im calling it). it allows for heavy custimization allowing for the infinite amounts of solid builds making 5 heros with the 5 basic archetypes cover everything people want in more depth. I dont know how and if it is possible, but i would like a more open hero. instead of every guy u see being a smiter/zealer, i would like to see at least 30+ builds for a paladin. it would be ground breaking imo. time tho....
as for the 5 current classes, im expecting similar to LoD. 5 + 2 = 7 incase ur not satisfied
More classes would only mean longer developpement, more of the same skills but tweaked a little so you can't say it's the same, less differences between classes which would nulify the reason to have additional classes.
well plateofwhale, I guess your just picky because I'm going to play every single one of those classes. It's always been 5 for the first release. Well, since D2 of course.

Yeah if it's well balanced you'll have more possibilities of build than d2.

I agree, druid and assassin from d2 expansion are not unique. Druid got spell that sorc could be get (now d3 the wiz have the tornado). The shift shape and "summon" could be fit for necro. Assassin, traps can fit for necro but amazon better fit. Martial arts and shadow discplines can be distribued in almost character (some for barb, pal, necro, ama..)

And those are the two we also have the most complete skill trees for. We have remotely no idea what other skills the monk or witch doctor is going to have. On top of that the fifth class has not even been announced.
Plus they have already hinted multiple times that we will get an expansion and more than likely have returning classes, like the necro.
I think 5 is enough, but more will be coming with the expansions. Although, don't assume that the first expansion will have 2 extra characters like LoD, it may be that there is only 1 new character per expansion and more than 1 expansion for this game.

Can I hear a Healer? As in a dedicated one (unless the monk in some capacity fulfils this role).
Other than that... it's hard, truly hard. And you wouldn't want a healer in a game like diablo anyway, it'd be boring.
hmmmmmm oh well, yes, 5 is fine, I never played the druid or sin anyways <.<

"A lot of fellows nowadays have a B.A., M.D., or Ph.D. Unfortunately, they don't have a J.O.B."
Who cares what theyve done in the past. Im sure its difficult to do a lot of things. That doesnt mean they shouldnt try to make more than 5 classes.
I don't think they have tried or they will try. They know it's a lot of job and 5 is enough and I think the release date is far enough ! More decisions you take on start, more time and money you save.
I think that 5 classes is just enough considering the fact that they need to develop lore for each an every one of them and this is not adding the balancing and skill animations/effects. Yep I want my game in 2011-2012 not 2015!
Apart from the time it takes to create and balance these classes, I think that 5 is probably enough. It encompasses pretty much every archetype possible (glass canon, summoner, heavy melee, frail melee and no. 5) yet still leaves room for some stuff in an expansion.
Also, having few classes means that each probably has a broad spectrum of builds, increasing replayability for each class.
Balancing more than 5 classes is exponentially harder. Also it takes so much more time. Time is finite, and with more than 5 classes initially in the game we'd see it in 2020's.
This post sums it up well.. If it was a pay to play game like WoW I could see people complaining over having just 5 classes but this is simply not the case
Five classes is a good start.
In Diablo 3 classes are planed to have completly different gameplay and have uncountable build ups possibility. Thats why every single class is a whole universe to explore.
I dunno the reasons why they didn't more classes, but i'm ok with 5. I'm more concered about the number of acts... Imo Diablo 2 LoD is too short, it should have around 8 acts.
I never be noticed of this, I only heard something like : they don't plan any build, they only throw great skill and waiting to see what happen with that. Personnally I'm sad to hear that.
So all builds will depending to the balancing and I know Blizzard had some difficulty with that, with d2 first released version.

Dude, when the dev start to plan builds the game becomes filled with cookie cutters. For exemple, in D2 when they added synergy most of builds were pre maded by the own game (zeal/fanatism/sacrifice, CB/Lightning/CL, Teeth/BSp/BS, etc..).
The best wy to creat a game were players can use their creativity to build up his own character is make everything equally usefull but unsynergic (so you can combine your skills the way you want.. you don't have to grab skill x because you choose to grab skill y).
And blizz are very good on balance. They failed on D2 because they stoped to care about D2 long ago, but their others game have quite good balance.

I can't too. If the fifth is ranged...
They covering all.
Personnally I don't care and I don't want more class. It's always rid on and unbalanced.

i gues it all comes down to balance potential vs time. the perfect game is imposible becuase it will take non stop (yes not forever, but non stop)
