The monk does kung fu, right...?
Can we be realistic a moment? Let's put up a duel real-quick. Okay. So Barb vs. Monk. Barb has big hunk of sharp metal. Monk has fists. Barb hacks the Monk. The end.
Unless there is more to this character then what has been revealed, I can't imagine selecting the melee character over... the other one.
"They are different though! Monk uses magical speed moves." Okay. That's a fair argument. The Barb has magical spinning moves, only his has enormous axes and swords involved... "No. It's different magic." Oh. All righty then.
From the expansive lore and large fictional world, I argue that Monk is a somewhat lackluster addition to the class roster. If you are inclined, convince me otherwise. But I know that I'd take an "axe", "fireball", or even "lame-ass Necro ripped wall move, w/ zombies" over "punching very quickly" any day.

Which is basically a complex way of saying each character has their own strengths and fighting style. It is impossible for any one class/archetype to be the best. Each class/archetype caters to a different type of player with different likes. Some classes bring you into the action, others keep you far away from it. Some wield massive weapons while others use none at all.
Which type of archetype/class do you like to play the most and why?
For myself, I love any class that lets me micromanage. The Necromancer and Druid from D2, the Hunter and Lock from WoW. I love pet classes. I love watching over them as they do all of the destruction. I love building them up rather than myself. I love having eight things on the screen all at once doing my bidding. My favorite build ever was a summon/werebear Druid. I would run around using Shock Wave while my summons killed everything. Granted it wasn't a viable build for the harder difficulties but it was fun on normal and my first build to finish hardcore on normal.

Well, in D2 I play mostly a necromancer, but I play it like a bow amazon; Having some tanks (mercenary, golem and revives) and spam bone spears and the occasional life tap to keep my mercenary alive.
Any class will do actually, as long as it doesn't involve getting up close and personal with the enemy. So it's either the nuking caster or the archer class.
I love casters... the feeling of unleashing the powers of nature upon your enemies is great, actualy i'm really exited about the wiz in D3 as the graphics are awesome and the time bubble and the runes are going too be awesome.
I also like bow users... in D1 my best char was a rogue/mage... is just a rogue with a good bow and magic at full and improved with some items... she can't learn apocalypse or that spirit spell(I think it's imposible for a rogue unless you have a scroll) but she/s great with the rest xD
I never liked melee chars though... i tried the barb many times but i never got to andariel... they feel boring to me
For some weird reason I always play hybrid classes and then get mad that I'm not as strong as one class or as much defense as another. I love the versatility and thaw why I choose them bu I alays regret it.

Wow, I'd never have thought melee was so low on the favor poll. I personally love Melee, and have taken a shining to the monk. It just fits with my personality and how I am irl. So first two characters are defiantly going to be Monk and barb.
With that said I've never liked the way Blizzard made assassins in D2.
I never liked the whole expansion !!
Druid : with spell !!! I always thought it's the duty of Sorc ??? Now the wizard (d3)has "twister" good things.
Assassin : Very boring one, mini new gameplay with "charges and kick" but it's not enough.
Assassin's weapon is claw, a small weapon for your fist = attack speed : SLOW ???????? what the hell ? I miss something I think ? or my conception of the physics is broken ?!
Traps is boring and lazy...
And I don't talk about rune Word$&"*/
My favorite "archetype" would be hybrid type classes. I like being able to fulfill any role on the fly be it healing, melee damage, or damage from range, with a bit slated towards healing/melee. As far as I know, no rpg or mmo has yet to properly balance anything like what I want properly. They're either overpowered or underpowered.
Although I do love to play stealth/assassins or agile fighter.

It would have been far more understandable if you were to back up your enraged arguments with actual proof, rather than "but it's not enough" or "boring and lazy". Walls are boring, sloths are lazy, Assassins aren't. I found the martial arts archetype to be very, very effective, and very fun. At least it engages you in something. Slow? I've had more than one that I'm sure were fast/very fast. Your conception of physics is actually broken. Something's shape, size, and form does not reflect its actual mass. You can have an object 200 Km long, lighter than an object that's 2 meters long. Are you getting this analogy? Let's hope so.
And I've always wanted to ask this question, and since a couple here can answer it, I'll toss it out. Why do people like to play support/buff archetypes? I mean, I find that extremely boring, and cuts away from a lot of fun.
When I first started playing D2 I loved using the bowazon, zealer, and frozen orb sorc. Later on I prefered the 200% fcr fireball sorc. and wind druid. Yup. So I guess you can say I'm partial towards the ranged characters.
usually melee but i actually just love pretty much anything is fine whatever i feel like lol but for D3 probably Barb first then a monk so mostly melee

If there is a problem, go through it.
I'm with you on that one. I love melee and destroying monsters with brute strength. All you need is your trusty weapon of choice and start hacking away. I'm also really looking forward to pulling out some sick combos with the new barbarian skills, making for an epic battle. Same goes for the monk.
I love that I can read a comic or see some other comic-based media and then go to my collection and make a team to represent what was present in the comic I just read.
I dont like at all how incredible difficult it is to collect all of the game pieces under the chase/SR model.

Usually stealth-melee though, stealth archers were shit.
Pretty much anything that has a challenge in its gameplay, not just the normal "beat it up", or "throw spells at is" types of characters.
If there is a problem, go through it.
Fuck you, I'm a dragon.
Me too !!
and melee too, it's why paladin was my favorite !
