Ok, this makes no sense to me... No LAN, no Open.net, no means to play the game multiplayer outside of the closed and strictly controlled battle.net ... This also most likely means no editor, no modding tools and no support for any user created content... Under the guise of trying to curb hacking???
This game is not an MMORPG, there is no pay 2 play and there isn't going to be a horrible itemstore that has you trade cash for an in game advantage...
So what's the deal? This is one of the reasons I detest MMO's and don't play them... I want to play a game the way I want to, not the way the developer tells me to play it... Limiting multiplayer to a strictly controlled battle.net server that will most likely allow no room for user created content and mods is a kick in the ass to both LAN players and the D2 modding community. It makes no sense to me.
They they could approach it like Bioware did for NWN2 and actually endorse/support private servers for things like modding/custom campaigns or have a seperate server for such a thing or simply allow a LAN feature. The whole, no editors, no mods and no means of actually playing the game outside of the one server to rule them all has always turned me off of MMO's, and Diablo 3 seems to be following this horrible path and it isn't even an MMO... Lay off the WoW crack pipe blizzard, because it doesn't make any sense to do this in a game like Diablo...
you're joking, right? LAN play has been one of the cornerstones of D2 (albeit a silent one) since day 1. in fact, i got the game within a couple of weeks of its release and only went on bnet about a dozen times, enough to be aggravated beyond all reason. LAN play is where it's at, no doubt about that, and i didn't know it was confirmed that D3 is't going to have LAN option. if that is true....then it's just another nail in the coffin.
EDIT: btw, first post. how y'all doing
Welcome to the forums.
No im not joking, i never played d2 LAN seriously. Always on b.net.
Thats they way its gona be on d3 for me too.
And yes im pretty sure they confirmed D3 dont have LAN... or was it only for Sc2? im too lazy to look for a link atm.
The last we heard was that Diablo III will not have LAN. They said there' may be a "pseudo-LAN", however, but it will still need to connect to the internet. It wasn't defined any more than that and I think that was just to tone down the rabid hatred flame wars saying no LAN created.
I never played LAN, either. Well, I did a bit for ES mod, but I got bored of it and went back to Battle.net. I've really only played Battle.net since LoD came out.
I never play LAN, I don't really see a point in having it, but then again I don't know much about it. But if I want to play with friends, I make a private game. As for no open b-net, imo, hacking is only fun for about 2 days. As long as there's no pay to play, which im quite certain there isn't, just having closed bnet is perfectly fine with me.
Simple answers to "I never play LAN, I don't really see a point in having it"
1.) Not everyone has cable internet connection
3.) Some people enjoy having a LAN network for at home caming
4.) You cannot play mods/user created content/total conversions multiplayer on battle.net and that leaves either LAN or private servers.
If you have a fast internet connection and don't give a flying fart about mods, total conversions and user created content then obviously you don't care about LAN... No everyone enjoys playing on battle.net. Not everyone has the connection for it and not everyone enjoys playing the same tedious game, doing the exact same Baal runs over and over...
There is a very large Diablo 2 modding community that have created countless hours of content to keep the game fresh such as new skills, items, bosses, monsters, maps, quests, music, as well as fixing a number of balancing issues and bugs that Blizzard never bothered to fix in the official game... But a large support for user created content comes from a multiplayer audience... You really think Blizzard will allow content like that on the official battle.net server? Obviously not, and given that that will most likely be the only means to play multiplayer, the LAN community and D2 modding community will pretty much be lined up against a wall and executed in regards to Diablo 3...
Maybe you don't care about that and enjoy the game the way it is, well that's fine for you, fair enough I respect your opinion, but that doesn't mean other types of gamers and other communities should be getting the shaft...
Diablo 3 is not an MMO and should not be run as an MMO with one server to rule them all with rules and content strictly controlled by Blizzard. This is not WoW
well Seth, pardon my ignorance, but that "NO LAN" thing you talked about: were those people lobbying to put LAN into D3 or to take it out? if the 2nd, then why? what's the downside of havin a LAN option in a game?
I think you're reading me wrong, here. I didn't say anything about lobbyists (my God, if we get political factions with game makers, I'll kill myself). I didn't say there was a downside to LAN, either.
But it's a minority, the most fun is battle net... So the problem are fixed by cd keys...
1) CD Keys can be bypassed via LAN play
2) It was stated over and over again (by the devs) that LAN play would compromise the security of the B.net servers by giving people a way to find a backdoor around B.net's security.
3) Don't start old wars. The issue is dead... it died a long time ago.

Well this is something I've commented on a number of times and is really my only major gripe with D3 thus far.
I played on b.net for a few months in D2, maybe a few weeks with LoD and tried it periodically later, but ultimately I always found that playing online brought about more problems than improvements for me.
I loved playing LAN though and even without any mods, the time I spent playing LAN was leaps and bounds ahead of any other time on D2 in terms of enjoyment. Playing with someone in the same room that you can talk to, lean over and point to something on their screen, etc. and not have any issues with servers and internet connections just makes the game so much more fun than playing with people online(even without internet/server issues).
I'll buy the game either way and enjoy the single player as I did with D2, but unless the pseudo LAN they mentioned doesn't require constant internet connection, chances are that my fiancee will barely touch the game and there's no way we'll buy that second copy for her computer.
Of course the rare case like this wont have any major effect on their sales, certainly nothing compared to what they expect to save due to less piracy/hacks.
I'm confident that the game will be amazing, but without LAN it wont be anywhere near as good as it could have been(for me at least). I know it wont matter for the majority of players, but I certainly share the disappointment regarding their direction on the multiplayer aspect.
erm....that could be said about pretty much every game out there that isn't online-only. that's a half-assed excuse.
Yes you are very right about this. I mean take a look at what happened to Demigod, one person bought it and then everybody torrented it. You know what happened afterward? The people that downloaded it created a big Hamachi network so when you look to play against people, you can easily find opponents. This was all possible due to LAN option, and Blizzard is trying to avoid it.
There will be no LAN it has been stated over and over again. Stop making threads about this shit.
Am I the only one who is excited about all of the features that battle.net will do. I think it is worth sacrificing LAN (which I use to play) for all the cool stuff battle.net will bring. Not to mention the hack protection.

Well the real kick in the chops is that Blizzard "while not officially supporting it" they allowed modding in Diablo 2... They made it fairly simple and fairly user friendly for fans to create there own content... This involved overtime through both patches from Blizzard "1.10 open up a wide array of new features and powers in modding" and the talented support of the modding community that developed a number of 3rd party programs.
Due to this, a very large modding community for Diablo 2 was established and made a lot of great content for D2... That community is eagerly awaiting Diablo 3 so that we could all continue this trend... Now were told it most likely wont happen because Blizzard wants strict MMORPG style control of the game that will allow very little room for user created content, which would probably be limited to single player if even possible...
To give us the features with Diablo 2 and then strip them away for Diablo 3 would be like them releasing Warcraft 4 without a map editor... The devlopers said they wouldn't remove any features prominent in Diablo 2 if they didn't feel they could offer something in its place to improve it. So what are they going to offer the modding community?... Basicly a "Thanks for all your loyal support keeping Diablo 2 fun for so many years for so many players, by introducing new content to keep certaub players involved in the game that would have otherwised quit long ago, but your services will not be required in Diablo 3... Thanks"
Yes, some of you may have enjoyed the tedious item farming and endless Baal runs of a game that hasn't really seen any signifigant content in years... But there are many others who simply got bored, many who would have quit if they hadn't found mods such as Return to Hellfire, Hell Unleashed, Meridian, Estern Sun and so forth.
what?!?! i don't know if you tried playing that game or (most likely) you're talking out of your arse, but demigod was I-M-P-O-S-S-I-B-L-E to play in the 'official' multiplayer mode. totally impossible, you couldn't play a game, period. either you played a custom game or you didn't play MP at all. add that to the fact that it was only an allright game, and you've got a scenario that doesn't bode well to any game. saying that nobody bought the game (which i don't even know if it's true) because it had a LAN option is dishonest at best.
It was pirated because it had a LAN option, yes.

When you buy D3 you will be able to play on the battle.net without pay to play i assume.
For me, thats good enough. I dont think the lack of mod support or LAN will make any difference in my gaming experience.
Thats my personal opinion on the matter.
