I see somewhere the spell "silenced" is this what I think ? come from famous RPG ? you can't cast when you silenced ? So it means you will heard an incantation from your character each time you'll cast ? it's will be annoying after while ?
I want know what do you think about arcane ? what is it, and what it's can do ? will it bring something new, otherwise than a type of damage you can resist for ? something usefull that bring an utility like ice that freeze or slow ?
Summary :
Ice behavior : slow Ice critical : slow more (?idea?freeze(less physical damage when freezed(normal or more magical damage when freezed)))
Lightning behavior : nothing Lightning critical : stun (?idea?normal physical and magical damage when stunned)
Poison behavior : DoT Poison critical : ? (?idea?all damage supposed to do in x second is done instantly + the supposed damage over x second (or decrease health by a %) or (Vae Victis would like to see poison crit do something along the lines of doing twice the amount of DPS for a few seconds)
Fire behavior : nothing (?idea?maybe AoE) Fire critical : DoT (?idea?maybe ADoT, area damage over time)
Arcane behavior : nothing (?idea?chance to silence) Arcane critical : silence (?idea?decrease temporary resistances and/or defence. I think it's would be great, add gameplay and it's something different of others elements)
SILENCE behavior : ? (?idea?unable to cast spell or unable to use skills (whatever if it's a spell or an special attack (melee)))(It's will need many magic-user if we want Silence usefull) I like the idea that you can attack but you can't use skill (special attack(if any monsters have a special attack))
silence is just an old term from older rpgs were the caster would have to recite a spell. If you were silenced, then you could not cast a spell. The term has just stuck around. I do not think that the casters will actually call out a spell name every time it is used. Silenced is just a known and accepted term and that is why they still use it to signify being unable to cast.
As far as arcane goes, it will be its own damage type with buffs and resistances. I think the main component to arcane is space and time manipulation.

I think it is odd for balancing issues to have a magic/arcane attack disable other magics from being used. For balancing, it makes more since to have magic disable physical and physical to disable magic. What if two wizards silence each other?

Silenced can be named : spell breaker (a spell from TQ) it's said what is said better than silence when caster doesn't say a word to cast.
I think something like knockback, stun... can be really good for arcane spell.

Oh maybe its will bring silence resist !! ahah, another resist :(...
If both of wizard in duel are silenced, they still have staves the duel can turn into a physical fight loll, it's will be less drastic like d2 duel.
Silence is a good speical effect for arcane crit or at least, i can't think in something better. I don't like the HGL phaseshift.. it felt almost like a stum.

They will have to wait until the silence worns out?
In diablo, disable spells usually have very short duration, so I expect silence to last something like 2.5 seconds while a stum lasts 1.0.
And i don't see the balance issua here... Some spells will counter other spells, some physical attacks will counter other physical attacks, some spells will counter some physical attacks and some physical attacks will counter some spells. Can you explain your point cause i'm not understading it :/

Don't forget that stum is already he special critical effect of lightning spells.
I think ice is going to move more into the slowing territory rather than actually freezing, else it really makes no difference to the lightning's stun attribute.
Isn't poison DoT? AOE could fit for Fire if they want to keep it different from poison.
Yeah !! 2 elements mustn't do the same thing, otherwise why put a similar gameplay with different graphic ? no sense... good point
DoT is already the behavior of poison.
AoE for fire is better fit.
An other good point, ice = slow and lightning = stun, I don't think ice will freeze because it's the same behavior as lightning, though it isn't the same resist.
DoT is the special proc of fire criticals. For exemple, if a fire bomb crits it will also set the enemies on fire. But dislike poison spells, fire spells are not dot based.
And i don't know about poison spells crit.. I've no info about that...
what is "HGL phaseshift" ??
HGL= Hell Gate London. It's a game.
In that game tehre was a similar mechanic. And what was equivalent to arcane damage had a phaseshift effect on enemies (they become transparent, very weak against magic, immune to physical and slowed).

ohh !! lol I have played to HGL, I don't find it as much fun as I hoped. And I never known what does phaseshift lol, with your explaination, I don't like it !! only because of "immune to physical" I don't remember but I think I got a sword that does phaseshift ??!?!? I remember that I make damage anyway...

Are you saying this is what D3 will use, or what you think it should use? Because that is not how it is, as far as the info we have available to us. You got most of it right, only a few changes.
Ice crit won't freeze, I'm pretty sure I read there won't be a frozen solid state, so ice crit will likely just slow the enemy more.
Poison crit I have not heard about. I think your idea of all the poison damage instantly would be a bit OP, as poison damage usually has a very high DoT. I would like to see poison crit do something along the lines of doing twice the amount of DPS for a few seconds.
Fire, I'm assuming you meant DoT not AoT
Arcane normally doesn't have a chance to silence, but a critical hit will always result in the target being silenced.
And I don't recall hearing about whether or not enemies will take more/less damage when slowed/stunned. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Thx, I only make a summary with what we already know. And put idea of what's can be great to implement.
The idea of more/less damage when slowed/stunned is only work if ice can freeze... (because freeze and stun are the same, so we need a difference, I trow an logical idea for it, when your freeze you have a icy shield so physical do less compared to stun that you're still without defense and be unconscious for a moment. But anyway you said no freeze, so my idea goes to trash.
I edit the first post and add your idea of poison...

Fire can be ADoT (Area Damage over Time). So it sets an area on fire instead of just one enemy like poison.
What does silence do in D3? Does it prevent spellcasting or spellcasting and normal attacks. Because it would be useless against non-magic using enemies if it doesn't affect physical damage. It just doesn't seem as useful as the other effects. I would prefer if it reduced the resistance and defence of the enemy for a few seconds instead.
Good point and good idea, It will need to have many magic-user monsters if silence affect only them... May be any monster will have a or many special attack and silence prevent that ?!
