I was wondering why games like Diablo continue to cap character levels around 100. I imagine this goes back to D&D.
The thing that makes Diablo so fun for me is that you can replay it and stuff gets harder and loot gets better. Why cap the number of difficulty levels at 3 (normal, nightmare, hell) but instead let it go up indefinitely or at least much higher, like 10-20 times around until it get insanely difficult, only the progression would be a bit more moderate than going from nightmare to hell.
Each level would be something like this:
gain around 25 skill points
loose 25 resistance
unique loot to each difficulty level
> loot modifiers could programatically match the difficulty level with minimal development effort.
more monster immunities
Some difficulty levels could introduce incentives such as extra/random skill tree entries.
At some point a level 85 character gets boring because they've got nowhere to go besides collecting a set or amount of magic find / defense. Having many difficulty levels would keep you interested in ramping your character up for the next level.
I always heard and read that it was because for it to go up to 100 it would require another digit in the game coding or something along those lines back in the day. Has to do with internal numbers. So they just left at 99 to avoid all the extra and thought of useless effort.
Someone might have said already. Didn't read all posts.

they said the would constantly patch diablo 3 as much as they did WoW and therefore they should keep making new quests and bosses and maybe making where getting to some bosses would be hard just getting to them then make the boss brutally hard so you have to get some good people and good geared and boom boom boom just keep making new things with the patches and keep level 99 cap and 3 difficulties

If I remember correctly you can text edit the max level to 127. Any higher I believe it would require a code edit.
Median XL a mod for d2 only uses text edits and has a max of 120 levels.
One mod has it that you can get to level 10k, Some of the areas were beefed up and designed to be played after Hell was complete. Even the normal versions of the areas are meant to be played after Hell was done.
There are some mods that added in new levels but it requires code edit to work and sadly it means PC only unless someone finds the code for the mac. No new acts since that would require even more code edits.
If it was up to me there would only be one difficulty. If there are more difficulties than the max should be kept at 3.

Demon's Souls, the greatest game of all times, did what you said.
When you finish the game you can allways restart in a harder difficult. It really works because the game is alot more action oriented then diablo (so the situation were you can't kill stuff because of lvls and gear is inexistent. You can allways count on your godlike skill to win a ultra hard fight).
However in diablo most of the difficulty is overcome by a good build and items alone and i don't know if it would work.
D2 MP is very imbalanced - thats why people get bored that fast. I took 6 mouths to finish the game on hell in SG while my bnet character do that in 3 days !
I hope D3 difficult on MP is about the same of D2 SP - if it happen, more then 3 difficult level is completly unecessary.
I would rather choose the difficulty right from the start and you can not change it for that charactor. I do not like going through the same game 3 times with the same charctor.
