Has anyone seen or heard any informaton about whether there will be a USEast or USWest in Diablo 3 on B.net?
I personally hope they don't have it but they probably will. Now I don't think they'll do many servers like WoW. It was always unfortunate when I ran into a group of online friends and discovered they played on USEast and I was on USWest, or vice versa. Starting over can be fun too but with all our items and characters invested in (including hardcore), ehh.
Just curious on this matter...

I'll tell you how split up servers really help: I don't have a million Germans, Italians, or so forth that only speak their native language. It helps significantly to integrate the players on the server if they all speak the same language.
I don't see an immediate downside to having separate servers. It makes it run faster, resolves the above, and it helps with things like knowing time zones of players (for instance, since I'm on the EC, I would be able to assume other USEast players have roughly the same time standard).

Took the words out of my mouth. ^This.
I agree whole heartedly. The USEast and USWest is also a good thing, because there is always a rivalry between both realms on who is the best.
Remember the days when people from USWest came to East and Said that they own East and everyone in it?
I loved PK'ing them...over and over and over....
Ahh...memories...

well, i'm from Brazil and always played on Europe realms. The time difference is huge and makes for some problems, but not much depending on your time (for some people, it's even better to play on Europe if you have a wired routine)
The language barrier is the biggest one here, at least, i think.
i think the biggest problem really is that sometimes you meet somebody who is not on the same Realm.
But i guess, there is no need on the new bnet for realms. you can have an account, with your chars. and when you connect, you connect to "virtual realms" to make easier the game search and stuff, but the sever is able to transfer you between them anytime, so if you search for a game that is not on the same "server session" you are connected, you just get moved there.
It would all happen under the hood, and basically, it would seem as one realm, but you could search on all the bnet for people that have the same geographic location as you.
Like on STEAM.

The time difference is a huge barrier for a lot of people. A big reason most clans made on this site never pulled through was because this site is split about 50/50 between USEast and USWest and so people are never active at the same times, people think that everyone else is just inactive, and then those active people stop playing because they think everyone else is inactive

But yes, I would basically agree.

Yeah, like you said, realm transfers would help. I think decreasing the borders between realms, something like what you described, would be good, though.
Yeah, I think it's useful to have many realms, else we'll have some japanese, english, french, portuguese, etc. all mixed together in every games... I think it's better to split everyone in a few realms like D2 or SC(not too many servers like WoW->250servers... maybe more like the Battlegroups, I think there are 10ish of them). I think these game did split the players correctly, according to where they were living, etc...
Anyway, I want realm to come back, and I want realm-specific items, so you can brag to other realms that your realm-specific items are far better than theirs!
But seriously, a few realms + possibility of transfering a character would be great.

If you can't amaze people with your intelligence, confuse them with your bullshit.
Ok, Here is my idea on this
(sorry if anyone previously posted this.. its early in the morning and I don't want to read through all of it.. sorry sorry sorry.)
I think they should have multiple servers BUT, I don't think they should restrict your characters or anything.
What I'm trying to say is, you choose a server that you feel like playing (one day it could be USWest, and 2marrow you could play USEast) and you have all your characters and items, even your friends list, AND (since this would be a cool feature.. and I'm not sure if there will be one) your guild/the guild you belong to.
So, you characters and stuff aren't saved to a specific server. Think about it.. you would never have to worry about which server is better, what server your friends play... all that bs.
@Dru :
Yeah, pretty good idea, a bit the same as Guild Wars with all the zones. There isn't any servers, only that every zone are created multiple times, and you can jump from a zone instance to another at any time when you're in town. Your friend is in instance 13 of zone 2? Get to zone 2, and then jump to instance 13, and he's there!
It's an MMO, so it avoids the lag of having 3millions people on the same server, and prevents the 'you're not on the same server as your friend' issue.
The same could be done with D3 realms, as long as people aren't simply jumping from a realm to another to spam us with D3 items for sale ads!

I remember a lot of USWesters harassing me when I first started playing.
I started a lot of stuff and ended up getting permanently squelched on the servers.. lol Never got banned, but it sucked not being able to communicated with players other than who I was actively playing with.

Watching 240 guys talk trash about cavaliers is like two retards having a slapfight over a sippy cup.
There will for sure be a us east and west, and possibly a central. The US west servers will almost 95% for sure be in LA. As for east, I know for WoW they have them in a datacentre in Boston. So theres a good chance they will be there too. As for central servers, almost for sure Dallas (same as WoW) but I pray for Chicago, as I ping 25 there.

Kinda like back in '01-'02 when I played on USEast and started to think that I had accidentally signed into the Korean server.

They said that the new B.Net will be split into USA, North America, Europe, and I believe two Asian gateways.
USA and North America? First time I hear USA isn't in North America..
They should do : French America (woot), English America, Spanish America, etc..
