Don't think that Act 2 is ENTIRELY desert-based. It's quite possible that the Acts simply melt together and create a nice flow. Hell, Act 1 could end on the outskirts of the desert, and Act 2 starts farther in. Maybe Act 2 ends on the outskirts of Kurast - but then people would complain that Act 3 is jungle terrain again. Does it really matter? The answer is simply: No.
Actually, it does. A LOT. If I play through the game and I have a way too big sense of deja vu, the game just failed somewhere.
I understand where you're coming from, OP, but there simply isn't enough information out at this time. We don't *really* know what act 1 and act 2 will look like, we just have some footage, a few rumors, and a few quotes that we've put together. Same with the story.

Watching the Monk demo, and the gameplay footage at BlizzCon, Act 2's deserts are vastly different from Diablo II's. There is actually structure to the surroundings. Cliffs, bridges, deserted mining equipment. It's all very different to the Diablo player's eyes, and I think once a player submerges themselves within the game, they will disregard the simularities between Diablo II's Act 2, and Diablo III's.
We have the new tristram where the story starts. It is slightly similar to Act1 in D2 but I'd guess there is a lot more to see and a lot of new things for us.
The deserts at the east have not gone anywhere in 20 years.. our hero is to travel there in the story. Where we go from the deserts is unknown so far but I really doubt we are going back to the jungles of Kurast. The last 2 acts (if we have those 4 acts) might be something we have never seen yet. (most likely the last act will be around the old worldstone area though)
Mmh ye, what we can see from the artwork and wallpapers and cinematic trailer, it seems like there is some kind of crater perhaps down to hell where there are zounds of demonic beings rushing to the sanctuary perhaps.

I'm sure the destruction of the Worldstone has created some sort of interdimensional rift or something that allows free access to Sanctuary from Hell. I'm sure that's what Baal corrupted it for
you gotta understand that improving the mapping not adding to it... there is a difference in adding mapping to improving. Improving mean changing, adding mean shit. they not adding a a new expansion they re creating the game LOLL!
How about we look at it from a Blizzard point of view. What are our aims with this installment of diablo?
1. More action
2. Shizzam
3. A story line
Okay well they got the first two down as far as i can tell, but they havn't released much on whats the going on of Diablo 3. Hmmm MAYBE the game starts in Tristrum because the Barbarian is going to find Kain? okay that explains act 1. Well you know Caldeum is pretty freken far from Tristrum... so how do they get there for act 2? hmmm.... and where are they going???
MAYBE, Kain has a theory that involves a visit to the homeland of the wizard (Was mentioned that it was the only homeland visitable in D3 during an interview) A.K.A. Xiansai
And to get there you travel somehow to Caldeum which would be (act one) and then from Caldeum through the dry steppes to Tur Dulra (act two)
Xiansai would be act 3 either the small island itself is completely over-run/devastated OR you go deep into an ancient underground city barried beneath their civilization OR a bit of both (could be trip to hell?). Act 4 if the return to (Sanctuary) or the surface perhaps in Entsteig or Bastions Keep *meaning you travled most of the world somehow lol* and then you make your way down through all of the ruined world now completely destroyed in your absence to arrive at WestMarch where Diablo or who ever is the last boss has made his home on the piles of innocents slain, and then you kill him -
Actually the storys all set up. Tey no longer do it the old way of one city per act. They do it with regions aka Forest, desert, marshlands, mountains, hell. They could do it from westmarch to what used to be the twin seas, then act 2 would be anything desert region style, and then act 3 could be visiting kurast and the surrounding swamp valleys, and then a nice trip back to arreat and xiansi would be nice for a final battle between diablo and the humans. Then from ther id say the skovos islands are a good expansion place being as their is concept art for it, it is there on the map, and that would be the only region left for another act. anyone agree?

I demand a source for the fact they are going each act by region, especially after all that writing
lol i dont have one. But i know that blizzard said somewhere that there are more thanone city per act and it will most likely be based on region. Just because they're trying to make it a continuous journey like i run from westmarch to what was the twin seas...a long journey. Cutscene im across the twin seas and now at caldeum now you run thru ct two and get to kurast cutscene then you run to arreat/xiansi...cutscene and kill big d cutscene and your done =) i like the idea that its a bigger more immersive world.

Yeah there might be more towns per area.. like new tristram and also some other town around there. Caldeum and another town or village at the borderlands. Anyways thats what I'm hoping for and also a smooth transition between "Acts".
Yeah i didn't really like just showing up in a diffrent town and that was it id rather journey there i mean minus the long boat rides and stuff but like as far as i can go. i want to go.

Yeah based on 2-4 areas and 1-2 dungeon.. they totally are identical games. Guys don't buy it, waste of money.
Okay I'm so god damn sorry for making a thread about this then. Maybe noticing something interesting shouldn't be recorded on threads about the game that this site is made for.

Yeah seeing a smooth transition between the places. So before you reach the borderlands you see how the forests of Tristram turn slowly turn into a wasteland of sand.
Not exactly they dont work that way just cause of the geography theres a sea in between em but that's essentially the point. That you go as far as you can and then get to the next place and go as far as you can.and so forth

Oh, and the tombs look far better.
