Is this official? ive been seeing it in the monk gameplay and wanted to know if its going to return. I did enjoy this grid, though id like to try out this new 1-size-for-all style. BTW which would you prefer?
I prefer the Tetris style. But I understand why a lot of people hate it. I think the new system is a very good middle point that take's both mindsets into consideration.
This been said before except more detail. Obviously for us diablo 3 fans, we favor the realistic look and less WoW shit. With that said the new one is better than the old style on your screenies. It still need more work however.
This is a heavily duplicated thread topic, but since I don't feel like closing it right now, I'll indulge it. I am going to second what Monkage said, and also add a question- what do those question marks over the items mean in the second screenshot you have there, sir?
BTW, sry guys could'nt find a better pic of the tetris style inv.
There's another one here, although it's not much better.
They did say in the past, a long time ago, that identifying would not be returning in Diablo III, though. I can't find the announcement at the moment, though. Maybe they did change their minds...
I hope not.. identify is nothing but an annoyance...
Yeah, I think that was the initial premise of not having it in the game, which I agree with. It didn't add anything to the game but the frustration of having to further abuse Town Portals to identify everything (and identify scrolls were nearly useless after your rescued Cain).
it would be a neat if you could change the style in the options menu.
I guess it would I'm honestly just hoping it all works fluidly and doesn't introduce any further annoyances. The tetris system, well, I liked it because I was used to it. There were some obvious flaws and hopefully this transitional form will resolve most, if not all, of them and not introduce many more.
They did announce no town portals, so it would be horrible to walk all the up to ground level just to identify. How about if its only a truly unique item, then you
would identify the item. I would'nt mind identifying a Tyreal's Might or a Glorious Axe. Or in other words, something you know youre going to benefit from.
I do agree that the identification system in D2 was quite annoying. If it does carry over to D3, even with no TPs, Blizzard has assured us it would still be easy to travel as there will be more WPs, etc... But I do hope the identification system does not return.
You guys are forgetting about the gamble with unidentified items. For example, an unidentified Shako will be worth a mid-range Shako, but it could very well be perfect.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
If I remember correctly, blue items (magic) don't need to be identified, but rares and up do. At least that's what someone who went to Blizzcon said, but obviously things change all the time, so who knows.
I don't think it's a true return of the old style, it's a evolution of the new style.
In the new style you had 3 tags: One for large items, one for smaller items and one for quest items. But this system had a crucial problem: You cannot use your large items slots to store small items or use your small items slots to store large items. This way your space were allways divided among 2 item class, you could not choose to carry just potions or carry just equipaments. For exemple: if you small item tags is full but your large item tag is empty you could not grab one miserable health potion even with alot of space in your bag. It is a pretty annoying and unneeded logistic issue. How to solve this problem ?
Allows you to transform a large item slot into a some small items slots. A good and simple way of do that is put the two tags together in one inventory and make large items take 2 slots and smaller takes one. The way it works now it's identical to how it works in the first screenshot, except the two tags are merged in one.
I don't believe thats a return of a tetris inventory. Why ? Because all small items uses 1x1 cells and all large item uses 1x2 cells. Well, if the tetris you're playing around have only 1x1 and 1x2 blocks it's the ultimate retarded tetris and should not have this name.
I'm having a hard time explaining my thoughs here (because english is not my first language):/ I hope you guys get it.

Thats very true. In Diablo the undentified item market were poor and most people ignores it because there was only one unique for every item type. Imagine 4 different kind of unique shakos. Decide if you want to identify it, sell it undentified and buy it undentify will require a fairly good market interpretation skill (good enough for a game) and can add alot of fun and deph in the game economic aspects wich is a great part of Diablo series.
Seriously, there is absolutely no point in arguing about the name. Its still Tetris STYLE. Its not like we got a real Tetris game. Who should decide when its not close enough to Tetris anymore? There have varying sizes, and you can move them around to make them fit. Fits enough. Pointless arguing.
What class is that I see in the second picture? The wizard?
I think it's wielding a sword ans a shield and it looks kick ass.
If that's really a wizard I'll be so happy to wield swords and shields.
It sure doesn't look like a barb, witch or monk.
Sorry... this is not a sword, it's a wand http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/
check out the new wizard image! the long thing you see in the screenshot and the animated picture here is the same.
I would love for the tetris style to return. Everyone organizes their inventories differently and it adds a little more personalized "flavor", if you will, to the game.
Is it really that big of a hassle to rearrange things? I always got a weird pleasure out of it...
Anyways, regarding the (?) items, to me that looks like a dagger (or wand or something) with a big fat (?) on it. On one hand I can't imagine them allowing identifying to return to a game where they're trying to introduce a more streamlined out-of-town experience. However, I don't think it'd be totally out of the question, as someone mentioned, to have rares/uniques/sets identifiable.
EDIT: Is that mace with an (x) on it because that character can't equip that weapon or because it's broken?
Tetris puts a feel of oh shit i can't pick it up and sell for all the gold i otta pick n choose, while the other gives you too much space and pretty much allows you to make infinite gold just go kill fallen collect crap items and sell so tetris is better.

Sure you can probably wield just about anything. Keep in mind these are low level characters and they have whatever crap on their hands they've found.
At higher levels you'll probably wield some kind of staffs that benefits your wizard more.
What comes to the inventory.. im fine with both styles. But not the old D2.

No it doesnt give you too much space.. If you have just 1 slot in your inventory how do you think thats too much space? Developers decide how much you can carry no matter what type of inventory system there is. If it is a 1 slot type of inventory there would be less slots.
new style
old style
i suppose those are non identified items? but don't hold me to it.

Thats the only class i can think of that looks like that. It would be nice to see a Sword wielding Wiz.:D
