Personally, I am all for the idea if they balance it out a bit. They should never really make or break a build, just benefit the player by having an extra hand. I have heard there will actually be two kinds of mercs (or at least in theory).
The first kind of merc is just a follower. You meet em in a random quest, you try to help them escape, they probably die but they survive maybe you get a reward. These cannon fodder mercs can be seen well in the 2008 WWI gameplay vid.
The second kind will be an actual companion. This won't be a guy you hire from a merc company, you befriend them and they offer to join you. They come with back stories, unique names, and some unique character archetypes. These characters will have meaning and you will want to outfit them well to keep them alive.
I personally think companions having skill trees is a great idea. They start somewhere when you get them, and they progress in their skill. You should be able to customize them a bit so not everybody's merc is the same.
Remember, this has got to be really balanced tho. I know its a lot more balance work though, maybe even too hard to balancf entirely.

There are no stupid questions, just a bunch of inquisitive idiots.
I think they might have mercs but they will be weak because your the hero and you need to be doing most of the work. And you will only be able to have 2 at max
i was also thinking there might be like a time limit on mercs before they die like maybe if you find them in a dungeon they will have been poisoned and die after 5 minutes

THIS..Totally agree that the player must do 95% of the work.. the merc can't be too assistive like in D2 where they can tank for you while you just stand and nuke the monsters behind the merc.. not fun,.
they should brings mercs back definitely!!! but with much better stats and you should be able to attach runes to them in order to customize your merc!!
