Hello friends, long time Diablo series player, new time poster. I have recently became interested in following the development of Diablo 3, and as with most games it seems the release time is of much debate. While I can in no way say with absoluteness of Blizzard's intentions for releasing the game, I want to share evidence I believe points to a 2009 release date. Please debate, debunk, or add comments of your own.
From what I've read and understand Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm are the only two major releases slated for Blizzard in 2010. This fact, coupled with the fact that the Blizzard Management was known for saying they intended to release only one major title a year begs the fan to believe a 2010 release of Diablo 3 is minimal.
That being said in a recent interview with IGN, Jay Wilsen (Game Director for Diablo 3) hinted indirectly in a major way to a 2009 release.
" IGN: Considering that this [DIABLO 3] is the big debut for the redesigned Battle.net, have you figured out anything you're planning on doing, with the exception of things like, obviously, easier ways of setting up co-op lobbies or creating panels so that everybody can immediately jump in and start up exactly where they left off?
Jay Wilson: Well, for us, Battle.net is?we're not quite at that stage. The full extent of our Battle.net development is that we do run through Battle.net. Pretty much everything that we reveal about Battle.net is going to be introduced in Diablo 3. I won't go through all of this because I don't want to take all your time, but the social networking aspects, the easy communication across games, and definitely?some of our big hooks are really good matchmaking, there was some poor matchmaking in Diablo 2, it was kind of esoteric and hard to use. We want a platform that puts you right next to someone else who's into the same thing as you, at the same level. We want you to be able to open up that friends list and say, oh, my friend Steve's killing Diablo, join! And you're right there next to them. We want players to be able to play together very, very easily. That's going to be a lot of work."
Now I inserted [DIABLO 3] as what it seemed to be that IGN was referencing to (which I may be totally of point). If this is the case, then that would imply that diablo 3 is the first game to be ran on the revamped battle.net. If Starcraft 2 (a game to be ran on the new battle.net) and WoW: Cataclysm are the only games to be released in 2010 logic should dictate that Diablo 3 should be released before hand and therefore in 2009.
If I am wrong about what they were implying I could be totally off, but that was my take.
What kind of fantasy world do you live in and how do I get there?

When Blizzard says the words " a lot of work" that is there way of saying "have fun waiting 2 more years for this feature/game"
Good thing you are atleast being optimistic
I see what your getting at, but everything else every talked about, or shown, or introduced by blizzard speaks of a later date. Just because battlenet is going to show all its goodies with d3, doesn't mean it has to be released first. Blizzard could easily release starcraft 2 first on battlenet in a semi beta test run, and use it to clean up and patch for the release of d3 with additional features.
Just because Jay says that those features will be introduced into Diablo 3 doesn't mean that Diablo 3 will be the first game to implement them. Now if he said that these features will be seen first in Diablo 3...different story.
The reason SC2 is delayed by a few months is because Battle.net 2.0 is not ready for SC2. Therefore Diablo 3 will not make it out this year and it will be 2011.
Reason for 2011.
Battle.net 2.0 isn't ready for this year.
SC2 is delayed because of Battle.net and D3 will use Battle.net2.0
SC2 and WoW Cataclysm are only 2 titles being released in 2010.
I highly doubt Blizzard would release 3 blockbusters in 1year
Interesting find. I hate to be optimistic just to let my hopes get smashed... but who knows. I wouldnt be surprised if Blizz pulled something crazy and dropped Diablo a lot sooner than later.
I think my biggest question now, is to know the status of Starcraft 2. I don't really follow news on that game, seeing as how I never really played the first one (I was more of an Age of Empires guy).. but anyway, I would like to know how much Blizzard has released of SC2. Clearly more information on races and stuff, but have they really released a substantial amount of information about the game? Basically what I'm getting at - how much more have they released about SC2 than D3? Who knows.. maybe they could be at similar stages of production.
I would really like to be optimistic and say d3 is closer than we think. Maybe blizzard is just setting up a way later date, just in case, but plans on releasing sooner. People are happier to get something sooner than expected, opposed to being told its soon and getting it later.
At the same time, I just don't care. All these threads, and what ifs don't do anything for the release of the game, so let it go and just wait till its actually here.
Uh...they already said D3 wouldn't even make it out by 2010, so predicting 2009 is the exact opposite of 'logical'.
They've recounted MANY times over that SC2 will essentially be the premier title regarding all things Bnet 2.0, i.e., we see them fly out together.
This isn't even touching on the astoundingly obvious fact that SC2 is a -lot- further along than D3.
I appreciate the discussion, but there really is absolutely no reason to believe this and about two dozen reasons we KNOW SC2 will be out first, on top of another 100 reasons that would even lead us to believe such.
To add on what kiserai said. Lets not forget that the SC2 team is bigger than the Diablo team, which means a SC2 release is much much more probable than a D3 release as the first 2010 title. Anyway like blizz says all the time : " It's over when it's over !"
I think the battlenet features that Jay talked about are exclusive to Diablo 3. With regard to matchmaking, Blizzard is planning to create a revamped matchmaking system in which players can matchup in a number of different ways. For example, at blizzcon, Blizzard mentioned that players will have the option to match up with eachother based on quest, character, level, etc.

This thread makes my head hurt.
I thought what you were thinking too at first, and I'm not saying it is for sure that it would come out earlier. But I at least provide evidence for my point of view whereas you provide none.
Uh, yes I did? So has every bit of information we've received over the past 1.5 years?
Let me try and break this down for you:
Blizzard (the company making the games) has said (literally: they have spoken the words) that Diablo 3 (the game we are both speaking about) will not even be out by 2010 (which is next year), which entirely and completely means Diablo 3 (said game) cannot in any temporal sense (i.e., the passage of time as has been known and understood by humans (that's you and I) since the first caveman noticed the sun coming up and going down at approximately regular intervals) come out this year (i.e., 2009 is a smaller number than 2010).
Are you still confused?
Maybe we should discuss your claiming that your own individual, mistaken interpretation based on poor reading comprehension of an interview snippet is 'strong evidence' ?
i just want the fricken d2 patch, or at (this would be amazing) a diablo 3 deme to be released. I mean come on, anyone here would play like 60$ to play just the diablo 3 demo.
To add on what kiserai said. Lets not forget that the SC2 team is bigger than the Diablo team, which means a SC2 release is much much more probable than a D3 release as the first 2010 title. Anyway like blizz says all the time : " It's over when it's over !"
Hah, I appreciate the support, but to my knowledge it's never been said that the 2 teams differ in size by any appreciable amount.
I hope it takes a few more years for Diablo 3 to come out. I still have a lot of things in my life before I can dedicated time to play it. Hopefully when D3 comes out I will have all the time in the world to play it.
Its nice to think...
BUt Starcraft is farther along based one the fact that...
They are adding units not even ment to be needed or useable regularly like the Brutilisk
Plus they can actually show us some Single Player and Multiplayer action and them actually using the game...
Plus the Beta is "Said" to be coming out in a couple weeks where as diablo has only 4 Characters out of 5
What I hear is its just balancing now and Beta testing which is Roughly 3-5 months:|
I would have to say Diablo 3 will not be coming for a while and im happy because I would still like to have a life
Between playing SC2 and D3
I love D3 but ive been looking into starcraft 2 for a while now and Im seeing that there is so much in it D3 needs So much work until its SC2 level...
PLUS SC2 will probably be released not long after if not in December... more likely after.. maybe 1-2 months
something to point out...(not trying to bash anyone else, pr be too optimistic)
1)This is blizzard we are talking about....Who knows what they will do
2) We have evidence that they have been working on this game since 2004 (or at least making up ideas...they have artwork on diablo3.com that dates back to 2004)
So it may be possible for a release, but, i highly doubt it

just out of curiosity, where did blizzard state verbatim it wouldn't be out by 2010?
The problem is Bnet 2.0 isnt even finished yet and when it does get done its will be fine tuned to SC2. They haven't even been working on D3 Bnet 2.0 all they really mentioned is that they have plans or ideas on what they might do with it but the focus is getting it ready to ship with SC2.
