So playing D3 at blizzcon was awesome but one thing kind of bugged me. There were not really any death penalties. if you die you can just have your party click on your little flag thing on the ground and poof! you back up. There's that and if you don't get Ressed then you spawn at the last "check point" it feels to me like easy mode if nothing really happens at all when your dead. for example theres a stage in the demo where you got to go down into a dungon and you had about 3 mins to look through it, and at the end of the 3 mins then you would die if you hadn't found your way out. The problem with this was that i found myself just running through trying to find good stuff down there and even if i did find an exit i ignored it to look for more stuff because i knew that all that would happen when i died was that it would take me back to the start where i entered. death didn't cost anything no run back to a body no dropping of anything. I didn't even care if i died i was basically a way of getting full mana back for me i just had friends res me and everything was great again.
So anyways whats up with the Death in D3? is this what they want in the end or did they just do that for the demo so you could explore more. If it stays like that it seems very easy mode / rainbows they better atlest put in a Hardcore mode or semi hardcore where you drop stuff.
um no that was definently just for the demo, either that or Im a pally loving noob who thinks that hammerdins take skill.
If as they said each monster plays a role and you need to be able to tell which monsters you want dead first or else they will kill you kind of thing and you need to do this on easy then just immagine how important it would be on hell mode
Also the characters abilities ect, arnt even close to finalization either basically its a reaally rough (remember this is way pre-beta of corse) version and i wouldn't be surprised if the characters were in some sense boosted in power for the demo.
They don't want heavy penalties. At least, no corpse running bullshit, wasn't that confirmed?
Also, Hardcore mode is confirmed.
Also, I believe penalties shouldn't be too severe. But I'm definitively for some kind of penalty that doesn't just make you look at death and laugh, because it doesn't change anything if you die. Thats just lame.
ya i hope they add something interesting i was just kinda worried about what they were doing with the death stuff. i would think there going to add some major things still since its is still so far from release.
I could really see a gold influence here. They said they were going to make gold very useful, i find that a gold penalty would kill us if it was really useful useful enough to need 40k for something like a windsforce. They could make it so theres a heft fine on ressing such as 1k-5k. and a minor experience loss 1-10%at max. That would be brutal if gold really meant somethign and you lost a substantial amount when you died. that would relly make people think twice.

you also don't want to make dying to severe in penalties. If you do all your going to do is recreate WOW's system where people will stop playing public games, and clans will take over. I personally wouldn't want that and enjoy being able to just jump in a game with whoever. I agree there needs to be a penalty, but not to the point it keeps you from enjoying the game unless your have ventrillo with some dick screaming to kill "x" guy.
i like what they had in Hellgate London and several newer MMOs where you stopped gaining XP (or lower XP gain) or even drops for a certain amount of time (depending on your level) after you are resurrected
Maybe your character could be weaker for some period of time after getting a resurrection. This would lower the exp and item gain since killing is slower. Exp gain from party kills could be reduced also so you can't just leech.
I am pretty sure that Jay confirmed that they will not implement the experience loss like in D2 upon death and that they were still tossing around ideas regarding a death penaly.
However, I do agree with the OP regarding the lack of a death penalty. I do agree that there doesnt need to be a exp loss due to death, because that was frustrating as hell when you were 95 and died...lol. But, I do agree with some of the other suggestions that you have a power or experience loss for a certain period of time after resurrection. I just hope that they make some kind of death penalty, because if they dont, I feel it will make D3 one step closer to being a another cake walk...I would really like to have challenge this go round, D2 was too easy imo...

~ Some people are still alive only because it is illegal to kill them ~
I'm not into the whole MMO mechanic of being weakened for a period of time (usually like 15 minutes). I hope they don't do that, it wouldn't really work for Diablo anyway since you could just leave and come back.
I hope they think of something though, death should be more than a minor inconvenience. But, I'll be playing hardcore so it doesn't make a difference to me.

Death needs to be hard and people should try their best to avoid it. Games like Wow never really had a death penalty, Ultima Online and Everquest 1 did so.
Thats the kind of example that shows exactly what needs to be avoided. Frustrating the player needlessly is not the way to go. Level loss? Are you a masochist? Some people just like pain, like.. "PUNISH ME PLEASE". Its really annoying. Its a game. No matter how many time I say that, people will still want punishment.
If you want harsh death, go play Hardcore. The option is there, and I don't use it for punishment, I use it for the trill to survive (which is awesome). I can understand that you don't want death to be meaningless. Simple significant gold loss and low XP loss can be enough. But don't go too far.

except you are only debuffed for 15mins if you rez at the healer
sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
please try to learn mechanics before you talk about them
I think a nice way to punish death without being to extreme would be using durability loss on items. For instance:
1st death: 0-2% loss
2nd death: 4-6% loss
3rd death: 8-10% loss
4th + : 12% loss
give it a time duration, like you have to die consecutively in order to go up in the % loss, like deaths have to be within 3-5 min of eachother. If you go for 5-10 min without dying, your record is swept clean, and you start back at 1st death loss penalty. This would create an increasing punishment for excessive dying, by increasing repair costs for items, or possible item break if you go nuts with the deaths without paying attention.
If im not mistaken there will be no more corpse running, youll start at the checkpoint or in the town with all your equips i thought. Again i could be wrong so please correct me if I am. Uhm yeah my earlier post was harsh about the punishment, here's my revised version.FML i wrote liek a page long post and devised an algorithm worth looking at for the fucking gold loss and it said i had to relog in and now its not showing... just fuckin awsome.
IT went somethign like this.>.>
Uhm if you had max lvl 100 and your char was lvl 50 and you had 55k inv gold and max gold was 5 mil
First take the percentege of your gold out of the max gold , then divide it by the max gold i think its like .0011 then add 100 max level and then take 1/6 of your char level and times it by the 100.01 or whatever number you get then with that number you move the decimal once to the right to get 8334.25. It wouldnt be significant loss although something hed have to work for to get back but not too hard but its enough to say hey damn it i cant die as much anymore.
and for the exp algorithim it was something like this same character as above btw only exclude gold and make it hes got 44345 exp and he need 50000.
take the percentege of your exp out of the needed exp to level then times then take your level x100 and take the percent and move your decimal one space to the LEFT to make the number smaller should be 8.896 and divide by new level. 5620.50 is the final result. again its not so much to make it like an hour of killing but enough to say i gotta watch how i play. no corpse running please so annoying in a horde of monsters and no debuffs i didnt know wow had one until like yesterday and i played wow like a year ago and i didnt notice when i ressed myself from healer i went on and kept killing. idk if they made it worse or something but it didnt ffect me nd making it affect you significantly reduces you baility to play where as gold and exp punishments are excusable and they arent bad with my algorithims and they arent to easy to just say oh death is a joke and let my self die.

seems though if you just put all the weight on gold, couldn't ppl just transfer their gold to another player on their account? or maybe put it in town in their chest to eliminate any punishment? Thats why I think the item durability would work great. Sure you could try it naked, but that seems less likely to bypass than just gold costs istelf.
The xp reduction would be interesting, but I could see that being a real let down if you do end up reaching a part you get stuck on or die multiple times. Spent an hour gaining xp and just lost it in 15 min from dying too much. Sure it would make ppl more cautious, but could also make ppl turn the game off from frustration of the last hour wasted with no gain.

Besides, Diablo doesn't have res skills, so the only thing equatable to rezing in diablo when compared to WoW or whatever IS rezing at the healer.
I don't see what point you're trying to make, actually.
